DMV

Nonprofit affordable housing developer MHP has officially launched a new $20M campaign to double its impact by the end of the decade, activating a plan to expand and preserve more affordable housing in Montgomery County, MD and across the DMV. As of today, MHP has raised $15.8M, 79% of its goal. The news was first reported this morning by Source of the Spring.

Gaithersburg

The City of Gaithersburg has started planning for its newest park, a 2.99 acre parcel located at the corner of Decoverly Drive and Steinbeck Avenue in Crown. The park will occupy a portion of the original 175-acre property that was annexed into the City in 2006. While the parcel is a generous size, after accounting for required easements and stream valley buffers, the usable park space will be about 1.5 acres.

Gaithersburg

The City of Gaithersburg’s Transportation Committee identified the I-370 Bicycle Connection project as a key connection from Summit Hall Road to Industrial Drive. The path will be intended to “connect Gaithersburg residents & neighborhoods to local business, mass transit opportunities, and provide a low stress connection to Montgomery County’s master planned bicycle network.”

Education

A total of 152 MCPS educators achieved certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) in 2023, and 109 were on hand to receive their pins in a ceremony on May 7. Another 73 successfully maintained their certifications; 38 attended and were honored for these efforts. Full list of NBCTs, 2023

Maryland

With nearly 3,000 native animal species and millions of pets in households across the country that rely on our support to survive, the non-profit organization SmileHub today released new reports on the Best Charities for Animals and the Best States for Animals in 2024. Maryland came in ranked as 2024’s “second worst state,” according to the study.

In order to determine where America’s wildlife and animal companions live their best lives, SmileHub compared the animal-friendliness of all 50 states across 18 key metrics. The data set ranges from the share of pet-owning households to state land designated for parks and wildlife to vulnerability to climate change.


Education

Montgomery College will recognize the class of 2024 at the 77th Annual Commencement Exercises this Friday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m. on the Rockville Campus Athletic Field. The College will recognize students from the Germantown, Rockville and Takoma Park/Silver Spring campuses, Workforce Development and Continuing Education programs, the Board of Trustees Academic Excellence honorees, and the four honorary degree recipients.

Niche recently released its 2024 list of the ‘Best Places to Live in Maryland.’ Niche is an American company headquartered in Pittsburgh that runs a ranking and review site. The company is an online resource providing information on K-12 schools, colleges, cities, neighborhoods, and companies across the United States. The ‘Best Places to Live’ ranking provides a comprehensive assessment of the overall livability of an area. This grade takes into account several key factors of a location, including the quality of local schools, crime rates, housing trends, employment statistics, and access to amenities in an attempt to measure the overall quality of an area.
