“Vibrant Fireball” Seen By Many in the Mid-Atlantic Region Sunday Night

At approximately 9:25, many in the Mid-Atlantic region witnessed a shooting star streak through the sky. The Capital Weather Gang’s Jason Samenow described it as a “vibrant fireball” streaking across the Mid-Atlantic sky. “It is probable that the meteor — or rock from space that entered Earth’s atmosphere — was a fireball, or particularly bright meteor.”

Many in Virginia, DC, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York captured the bright shooting star on camera, including Instagram user @OfficiallyKingPhilly from right here in Montgomery County, MD (explicit language warning). MCPS Employee Admission for Athletic Events

Current and retired MCPS employees (and one guest) are admitted free into regular season contests hosted by MCPS schools, contingent upon proper identification and the availability of space. MCPS employees include teachers, administrators, coaches and support staff. Acceptable identification includes the following:

The season opens on Friday, Sept. 1. County Sports Zone is the official website for MCPS high school schedules. Opening day for middle schools is Sept. 26, and middle schools schedules are available here.

Heat Emergency Alert Issued For Montgomery County Monday

Montgomery County has issued a Heat Emergency Alert from 12 – 6 pm on Monday, September 4. Residents should prepare for heat index values to reach 95+ degrees during the afternoon hours. These dangerously hot temperatures and heat index values could cause heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Try to stay in an air-conditioned location. Stay hydrated. When possible, take frequent breaks in a cool, shaded area.

Don’t forget your pets! If you see an animal outside who appears to be in danger, call the Animal Services Division at 301-279-8000. The following precautions will help residents remain safe and more comfortable during excessive heat days:

Metro Service Information for Labor Day

Per WMATA: On Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4, Metrorail will open at 7 a.m. and close at midnight, providing normal Sunday service on all lines at all 98 stations, including the Green Line where four stations closed for summer construction will reopen ahead of schedule tomorrow. Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule. MetroAccess customers may make a reservation to travel on the holiday; however, subscription trips will be canceled. 

Whether heading to a movie, barbeque, or one of many local events, Metro is your convenient and affordable way to get around the region this holiday weekend. If you’re heading out of town, avoid the traffic by taking Metro to Washington Dulles International or Reagan National airports. Metro this week announced that Green Lines stations Greenbelt, College Park-U of Md, Hyattsville Crossing, and West Hyattsville stations, closed since July 22, will reopen for rail service on Saturday, Sept. 2, three days ahead of schedule.

60th Annual Rockville Antique and Classic Car Show Takes Place on October 14

The Rockville Antique and Classic Car Show, a city tradition for six decades, rolls into Rockville Civic Center Park on Saturday, Oct. 14.

The show’s 60th edition will be held 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the picturesque park at 603 Edmonston Drive. Home to the historic Glenview Mansion, the hills of Rockville Civic Center Park offer a fall backdrop for collectors and enthusiasts to share memories as they stroll through vehicles from 32 car clubs, from Packard and Plymouth to Fiat and Ferrari. This year’s special display will celebrate 75 years of Lotus.

Update: Nearly 50 Himalayan Cats Have Been Trapped in Two Montgomery County Park Areas

Last week we let you know of the Montgomery County Community Cat Coalition (MC C³) announcing that 33 Himalayan cats/kittens have been found in two Montgomery County parks. The number has since approached 50 cats with more being found/trapped each day.

According to MC C³, Himalayan cats and kittens have been found in the Wheaton area, most of them near the Sligo Creek Trail or in Wheaton Regional Park. Some have also been found in nearby neighborhoods. Citizens are engaged in an active effort to search for these cats and kittens and report sightings. There is still no word on who released the cats in the area or why, with efforts concentrated on ensuring their safety.

Wheaton Barbershop Has Closed After 75 Years

Richard Miller, owner of the Wheaton Barbershop at 11439 Georgia Avenue for the last 20 years, has closed the barbershop doors permanently. Miller was an employee of the shop since the 70s and bought it in the late 90s. The chairs in the shop are the original chairs from when the shop opened in 1948.

According to an interview with FOX5, “Miller started cutting hair there in the late 1970s and then bought the shop outright 25 years ago. He couldn’t find anyone to take over his shop, so it’s closing for good after 75 years at the Wheaton Shopping Center.” When asked if he will miss the shop, Miller said “”I’m going to miss it. I’m a little sad overall. But I’ll get over that.”

MoCo-Native Owned Andy’s Pizza is Now Open in Bethesda

Last summer we let you know that Andy’s Pizza, the 2021 winner of the International Pizza Challenge™, was coming to Montgomery County with an upcoming location at 4600 East West Highway– the former site of sandwich shop Booeymonger in Bethesda. The restaurant is now open according to several messages from readers and confirmation via the Andy’s website. The restaurant is open from 10:30am until 10pm Monday-Thursday, 10:30am-12am on Friday, 11am-12am on Saturday, and 11am-10pm on Sunday.

Andy’s Pizza aleo has locations in Adams Morgan, NoMa, Navy Yard, and Shaw in DC, with an additional NoVa location at Tysons. Another upcoming location is planned for Old Town Alexandria. Owner Andy Brown, who grew up in Bethesda, stated that he had been looking in the area since his restaurant began expanding. According to Business Journal, “The Bethesda location will also have more space than average — its other locations run roughly 1,800 square feet — to accommodate larger parties.”

2023’s Final Heat Wave? Blazing Hot Week Ahead

After a string of beautiful late summer days, hot temperatures will be making a return Sunday with highs expected to reach the mid 90s. It’s only going to get worse from there, as high temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s for most of the week.

Sunny skies and hot weather are the story for the week with Sunday looking to reach approximately 95° (and feel like the upper 90s), Monday is looking to get to about 97° (and feel like the low 100s), Tuesday at 98° (and feel like the low 100s), Wednesday to feel like the hottest day of the week with temps reaching 98° (and feel like 105°) and Thursday at about 96° (and feel like the low 100s).

Maryland Man Pleads Guilty for Threatening An LGBTQI+ Advocacy Group; “You have the right to your own opinions, but you don’t have the right to threaten the lives of those who disagree with you”

Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland:– Adam Michael Nettina, age 34, of West Friendship, Maryland, pleaded guilty today to using the telephone to threaten a group that advocates for LGBTQI+ people. As part of his plea agreement, Nettina also admitted sending messages to Maryland and Virginia state delegates due to their statements in support of transgender people.

“You have the right to your own opinions, but you don’t have the right to threaten the lives of those who disagree with you,” said United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, Erek L. Barron. “We’ll continue prosecuting these threats to the fullest extent of the law.”
