Did You Know One of The Original Mighty Ducks Is From MoCo?

While many remember Elden Henson’s roles as one of the “Bash Brothers” Fulton Reed in the Mighty Ducks movies and Foggy Nelson in Netflix Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series Daredevil, you may not know that he was born right here in MoCo. Then known as Elden Ryan Ratliff, he was born August 30, 1977 in Rockville. His mom, Sayde Henson, was a teacher, and his dad, George Ratliff, was a former New York theater actor. He didn’t stay too long, as his family moved to California by 1980.

Henson started acting as a print model when he was just a toddler, and began acting in commercials when he was six. He had many guest roles on television and acted in films like 1988’s Elvis & Me (written by Priscilla Presley) and 1989’s Turner & Hooch starring Tom Hanks. As a teenager, he starred as Fulton Reed in the Mighty Ducks trilogy (1992-1996). Since then, he has had supporting roles in films like The Mighty, She’s All That, Idle Hands, O, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, The Butterfly Effect, and a lot more.

Montgomery Parks Asked Fourth Graders to Help Design the Future Bethesda Market Park

Bethesda Elementary School students try their hands at becoming park designers: Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is in the planning phase for a future park in Bethesda, the Bethesda Market Park, and is turning to the next generation for ideas. The department challenged students at Bethesda Elementary School to draw the park of their dreams and a handful of fourth-graders jumped at the chance. “We wanted to find out what the community wanted in this new park, so we asked a group of experts – local fourth graders,” said Mike Riley, director of Montgomery Parks. “This new park is a very big deal – it’s not every day we can create a brand-new park in a busy downtown location like Bethesda. We are thrilled that students want to be part of the brainstorming.”

 The future designers came up with a lot of ideas ranging from exciting features like trampolines, zip lines, and obstacle courses to natural features like a place to watch birds, tree-lined walkways, rock walls, and flower beds. And lest we forget the cat statue mister. They eagerly put their creativity to work and collaborated to sketch some wonderful designs. 279 MCPS High School Students On Track To Earn Associate Degree To Be Honored on Tuesday Evening

MCPS and MC have partnered to provide Dual Enrollment opportunities to college ready students at all high schools as well as through Middle, Virtual Middle, and Early College options. The 2nd Annual Dual Enrollment Recognition Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 16th at the Universities at Shady Grove from 6:30-8:30 pm. A total of 279 MCPS high school students who are on track to earn their Associate Degree from Montgomery College will be recognized during the event.

Dual Enrollment opportunities allow MCPS college-ready high school students to take college courses during the academic school year.  High school students who enroll and take a college course at any Maryland public college or university are able to do so at a reduced cost. If students select to take courses at MC, and meet qualifications for and separately apply for the MC High School Grant, they may be able to take college courses at no tuition cost.  Students are able to take college courses offered on the high school campus (at select high schools), on a college campus, or online during the fall, winter and spring college terms of their junior and/or senior year.  All college courses on approved list that are successfully completed will receive dual credit by counting toward college and high school credit.  The courses will appear on the high school transcript unless requested that it not during the enrollment process.

MoCo Celebrates 76 Centenarians Including Two Who Turn 107 This Year

“We had a terrific time today celebrating our 76 centenarians in Montgomery County with two, in particular, turning 107 this year!” Montgomery County Recreation (MoCo Rec) shared via social media. The celebration involved any resident who is at least 100 years old (centenarian) and their families. MoCo Rec began its search for Montgomery County centenarians in January of this year. Free Bike Repair Pop-Up Coming to Crossroads Farmers Market May 24

On Wednesday, May 24th, in celebration of National Bike Month, the Planning Division will be tabling at the Crossroads Farmers Market from 12:00-2:00 pm. In addition to free bike safety swag, Upshift Workshop will be providing free basic bike repairs on-site, on a first come-first serve basis, rain or shine. “We want to make sure our local bike riders are road ready now that the good weather is back!”

About Crossroads Farmers Market: Crossroads Farmers Market in Takoma Park, Maryland, is a lively community gathering space for people of all backgrounds and incomes, where families, foodies, neighbors, gardeners, live-music fans, and coffee lovers meet every Wednesday afternoon to eat lunch and stock up on fresh ingredients for the week ahead. Applications Open For Young Entrepreneurs to Present at Children’s Business Fair

The third annual Montgomery County Children’s Business Fair will return in August after a three-year hiatus. Applications are now being accepted for the fair, set for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19. The fair, which will be held in Rockville Town Square, is open to youth aged 6-15.

The deadline to apply is Friday, June 2. Applications are available here. Open to the public, the fair will host 40 young entrepreneurs. Those selected will have an opportunity to present innovative ideas and make sales pitches to a panel of judges from the local business community and celebrity influencers. Participants are responsible for setup, sales and customer interaction. The goal is to give the participants real-world business experience. Cash awards will be given for best innovative idea, presentation and sales pitch. Montgomery County Children’s Business Fair.

Police Investigate Sunday Evening Gas Station Shooting

Per Takoma Park Police; At approximately 5:52 pm, a shooting occurred in the 900 block of East West Highway (Crown gas station).  Upon police arrival, one male adult was suffering from a gunshot wound.  The victim was transported to a local hospital; condition unknown at this time.  This investigation is active and fluid.  Officers are canvassing the area.  More info will follow when the  PIO is updated.

71 Educators Honored at National Board Certification Pinning Ceremony

Per Montgomery County Public Schools: Seventy-one MCPS educators (full list below) achieved certification by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) in 2022, and 45 were on hand to receive their pins in a ceremony on May 8. Another 90 successfully maintained their certifications.

National Board Certification is achieved through an assessment process designed to measure what accomplished educators should know and be able to do. The process requires educators to demonstrate how their activities, both inside and outside the classroom, strengthen student performance and contribute to student achievement.

Several Lanes of Eastbound ICC Closed Saturday Afternoon; One Person Dead After Fall

Several of the eastbound MD200/ICC lanes are closed following a technical/high angle rescue by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) on the highway, between Redland Rd and Muncaster Mill Rd. around noon on Saturday.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, a person jumped or fell off of a 100’ bridge into a wooded area below and suffered a traumatic injury. In an update provided at 12:37pm, Piringer shared that the injured person did not survive. Traffic remains backed up as of 1pm.
