The U.S. Soccer Federation has named Oguchi Onyewu as the Vice President of Sporting. Onyewu, 40, brings a wealth of experience as a player and sporting executive with over 25 years in the game. The Olney native attended and played for Sherwood High School. During high school, he enrolled in the U.S. residency program for soccer in Bradenton, Florida before returning to Sherwood to graduate.

Per US Soccer: In this newly created role, the two-time World Cup veteran will work closely with U.S. Soccer’s Sporting Director Matt Crocker in supporting all sporting initiatives within the Federation. Reporting to Crocker, Onyewu will also play a prominent role in managing relationships with clubs and leagues in the United States and across the world, along with strengthening other stakeholder relationships.


Laytonsville

A Laytonsville Town Special Election will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023. The election will be held at the Laytonsville Town Hall, 21607 Laytonsville Road, and the polls will be open from 3:00pm to 8:00pm.

All citizens of the Town age 18 years and upward and who are registered, bona fide residents of the Town for not less than thirty (30) consecutive days before the election shall be qualified to vote. CANDIDATES FOR MAYOR: Charles Hendricks and Sharif Hidayat.

Celebrating the past and present of the first places African-Americans owned land in Montgomery County, the Scotland community of Potomac, has announced significant expansion of the annual Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival for 2023. Featuring a children’s carnival and musical performance highlighted above, as well as art exhibitions, food, sports, and presentations on Black history in this region, the events for the federal holiday on Monday, June 19, will be spread across the Cabin John Regional Park, Cabin John Village, the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, and the Scotland community on Seven Locks Road.

On Tuesday, the Montgomery County Board of Education (Karla Silvestre), Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS Superintendent Monifa McKnight), Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA President Jennifer Martin), Service Employees International Union Local 500 (SEIU Local 500 President Pia Morrison), and Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (President Christine Handy) wrote the following joint letter to the Montgomery County Council concerning the funding of the MCPS operating budget:

Germantown

Seneca Valley High School athletic director Jesse Irvin has announced Quintin Cosby as the sixth head coach in the storied history of Seneca Valley football. The full announcement can be seen below, courtesy of Seneca Valley Athletics:

Bethesda

Persimmon, a popular and highly regarded Bethesda restaurant on 7003 Wisconsin Ave for 25 years, has been acquired by its employees from founders Damian and Stephanie Salvatore. The deal closed on May 8. Terms were not disclosed.

“Deciding to sell wasn’t an overnight decision,” said Stephanie. “It’s taken a while to think things through, such as figuring out our next steps professionally and personally. We have an amazing team of professionals who have helped prepare us for this day. After 25 successful years, we decided this was the right time.”

Residents can comment online or in-person about the future of the popular Silver Spring destination: Montgomery Parks, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is holding a hybrid community meeting about the planned renovation of Rosemary Hills-Lyttonsville Local Park.

Chevy Chase

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 2nd District Investigative Section are investigating an armed robbery that occurred on Monday, May 1, 2023, in the 5500 block of Wisconsin Ave. in Chevy Chase. Detectives have released photos of the male suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

At approximately 10:45 a.m., 2nd District officers responded to the location for the report of an armed robbery that occurred inside a commercial building. The investigation has revealed that the suspect approached a female victim in a stairwell of the commercial building. The suspect pushed her against the wall, touched her inappropriately, displayed a knife and threatened to kill her. The suspect took her cell phone and threw it against the wall. The suspect then stole her wallet and left the scene.
