Takoma Park

People’s Book, a woman-owned general purpose bookstore, has announced it will be opening at 7014-A Westmoreland Ave in Takoma Park on Tuesday, June 27. According to People’s Book, “the store will have a diverse selection of over 12,000 books, with a special focus on children’s literature, local interests, new releases and independent magazines. The inventory will also include book-themed gifts. Locally roasted drip coffee, kombucha, and other beverages and treats will be available.” The store plans to announce an official grand opening celebration at a later date.

“We’re so excited to provide readers of all ages opportunities to explore, learn, and connect with their neighbors,” said Megan Bormet, store owner and former elementary school educator. “Helping kids and adults find books they love is what I like to do best, and I’m thrilled that we can do this at People’s Book.”


MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: The Economic Development (ECON) Committee will meet on Monday, June 26 at 9:30 a.m. and will receive an update on the Economic Development Fund. The members of the ECON Committee include Chair Natali Fani-González, Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe, Council President Evan Glass and Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles.

The joint ECON and Public Safety (PS) Committee will meet at 11 a.m. to review Executive Regulation 04-23: Police-Private Security Camera Incentive Program.


Gaithersburg

Neal’s Bagels opens today at 113 Commerce Square Pl in Gaithersburg. The new shop is located in the Kentlands paseo, next to Burtons and across from RanKen Noodle House. Neal’s Bagels has relocated from its previous location about a mile and a half away at 12141 Darnestown Rd in the Potomac Valley shopping center. Hours of operation below:

The Maryland-Nation Capital Park Police Montgomery County Division have released additional information regarding a shooting that occurred in Germantown on Sunday, June 25. According to a press release, “The Maryland-National Capital Park Police are investigating a shooting that occurred today at approximately 6:30 p.m. at Clearspring Local Park located at 20101 Scenery Drive Germantown, Maryland.

Montgomery College

Per Montgomery College: The Montgomery College Foundation announced the establishment of the Islamic Community Building Opportunities Scholarship. Four donors from the Islamic community have pledged $34,000 over five years to establish the scholarship. Any Montgomery College student who meets the criteria is eligible for the scholarship, regardless of religion or background.

Per Montgomery College (6.21.23): This afternoon, Montgomery College President Dr. Jermaine F. Williams and MC student Williams Ochoa participated in a moderated conversation organized by the office of the First Lady of the United States and held at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Alexandria, Va. The event was part of President Biden’s Investing in America tour and featured Dr. Jill Biden, a longtime community college professor, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, of India. The conversation was moderated by NSF Director Dr. Sethuraman Panchanathan.

In a statement this morning, the White House said: “During the tour, President Biden and leaders across the Administration will travel directly to communities benefitting from President Biden’s Investing in America agenda. This includes communities seeing new manufacturing and clean energy investments spurred by the Inflation Reduction Act and CHIPS and Science Act, new infrastructure projects funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, small businesses and families saving money on high-speed internet as a result of the American Rescue Plan, and more.”


MCPD

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 3rd District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Kevin Stewart, a missing 36-year-old from Silver Spring.

Stewart was last seen on Friday, June 23, 2023, at approximately 7 p.m., in the 12300 block of LaPlata St. He may be driving a Black 2022 Honda Accord with Maryland registration 9FC5345. Stewart has brown eyes and brown hair. It is unknown what he was last seen wearing. Police and family are concerned for his welfare.
