‘Transit Equity Day,’ Honoring the Birthday of Rosa Parks, Will Be Observed on Saturday, Feb. 4

Per Montgomery County: Rosa Parks became a key figure in the Civil Rights era when she refused to give up her seat on a segregated Montgomery, Ala., public transit bus and was arrested in 1955. Recognizing her life and legacy, Montgomery County will join in the celebration of “Transit Equity Day,” which is observed on her birthday, Feb. 4, by reserving a seat on every Ride On bus operated by the County Department of Transportation.

Parks is best remembered for her brave act of resistance by refusing to give up her seat to a White man in Montgomery, Ala., in 1955. Her actions inspired the local Black community to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott, led by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We are committed to making our schools safe and inclusive spaces for all our students, no matter their race, religion or background.  We stand ready to support MCPS in its ongoing efforts to create a community of care and respect.

We must uphold the values of diversity and inclusivity that make Montgomery County so special and continue to educate our youth about the importance of respecting these values and understanding the harm these hate acts cause. To ensure we are an inclusive community, we all must become actively conscious about racism and take actions to end racial inequities.

Detectives From Special Investigations Unit are Asking For Public’s Assistance in Locating Missing 14-Year Old

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating, Evelin Sanchez Gomez, a missing 14-year-old from Aspen Hill.

Sanchez Gomez was last seen on Monday, January 30, 2023 at approximately 7 a.m., in the 3500 block of Pear Tree Court.  Sanchez Gomez is approximately 5-feet, 8-inches tall and weighs 175 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes. It is unknown what clothing she was last seen wearing.  Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Per the Maryland Lottery: “A Montgomery County mother of four and her husband will never forget two startling experiences that occurred on the same day. First, she discovered she was pregnant with the couple’s fifth child, and later she won $50,000 on a Six Figuresscratch-off.

Montgomery County Individuals and Organizations Honored with Street Outreach Network’s First Martin Luther King Peacemaker Awards

Per Montgomery County: Eighteen organizations and individuals were recently honored with Martin Luther King (MLK) Peacemaker Awards at a ceremony sponsored by Montgomery County’s Street Outreach Network (SON), which is part of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Positive Youth Development (PYD) program. The awards organizations and individuals were honored for their peacemaking work to make Montgomery County a better place to live.

Those honored at the ceremonies on Jan. 13 were chosen by staff from the SON for their efforts to help prevent violence and bring peace to their neighborhoods. Among the honorees were community leaders, including those from business and education, as well as County Government and elected officials.

Montgomery County Police has released additional information regarding this morning’s homicide investigation in Silver Spring.  Per MCPD: “At approximately 3 a.m., Montgomery County Police responded to a residence in the 8800 block of Lanier Drive for a check the welfare. Inside, officers located a deceased adult female.

Montgomery County Police announced Wednesday morning that they are investigating a homicide that occurred in Silver Spring.  According to a tweet, “MCPD is investigating a homicide in the 8800 block of Lanier Drive. A suspect is in custody and the scene is secure. There is no threat to the community.” No additional information has been released. We will post an update when additional information is available.

Beyond MoCo: Governor Moore Celebrates Revitalization and Reopening of Baltimore’s Historic Lexington Market

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller today joined state and Baltimore City officials, development partners, and business owners to celebrate the newly revitalized and reopened Lexington Market. Today’s ribbon cutting and ceremonial bell ringing marked the opening of a new, 60,000-square-foot market building, public plaza, and the return of more than 40 businesses that will feature a mix of relocated institutions including Faidley’s Seafood and Connie’s Chicken & Waffles and new Baltimore favorites including Tio G’s Empanadas and Taharka Brothers Ice Cream.

“This transformational project shows the power of the state working together with private partners and the City of Baltimore to better serve Marylanders,” said Governor Moore. “The $45 million redevelopment of this Baltimore treasure will keep it in operation for many decades to come so it can continue to be a home to merchants, a gathering place for residents and attraction for visitors to our great state and to the city of Baltimore.”

Rabbiah Sabbakhan Named New Director of Montgomery County Department of Permitting Services

Before joining DPS, Sabbakhan was the chief building official for the City of Rockville. He has worked in several roles for the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) at the government of the District of Columbia, including permitting chief, chief building official, senior advisor for building and compliance. He also served as interim director of the DCRA, where he started its paperless permitting movement with the implementation of ProjectDox and started its Green Building Program.

Earlier in his career, he worked for the City of Richmond, overseeing construction of several major economic development projects through completion and occupancy. He has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Virginia.
