Longtime MCPS teacher and coach Larry Hurd has accepted the Athletic Specialist (formerly known as “Athletic Director”) position at Walter Johnson High School. Hurd, who has been the football coach at the school, will be stepping down as coach in order to take the position. He will be replacing the legendary Tom Rogers. Below is Hurd’s full statement:
“Wildcat Nation,
It is with great excitement that I announce my acceptance of the Athletic Specialist position at Walter Johnson High School. It will be an absolute honor to serve this great school and community leading the most amazing athletics department in the State of Maryland. My promise is to work hard to continue the incredible legacy of Mr. Tom Rogers, who I look to as a mentor and a friend. Mr. Rogers has established a level of excellence in his position and in our program that can not be replicated.
With this excitement does come some mixed emotions as I will have to step down as the Head Football Coach. I will miss the day to day interaction with these incredible young men. They have built a program that everyone can be proud of. I will remember our greatest victories together, our toughest defeats and all the times in between. Thank you for all the wonderful memories and remember FAMILY first, ALWAYS!
Over the next few months, I look forward to the establishment and continuance of relationships with all of our Walter Johnson Athletic Programs. Our commitment to Education Based Athletics, along with the core values of Walter Johnson High School and Montgomery County Public Schools will always be our top priorities.
I would like to thank Principal Baker and the hiring committee for the honor of becoming the newest Athletic Specialist beginning in July of 2023. I will do my best to help continue the excellence that is Walter Johnson Athletics.
42 Teams 1 Heartbeat!
Go Cats!
Larry Hurd Jr.
