Update: We spoke with Gaithersburg City Councilmember Robert Wu who informed us that officers were not shot at during yesterday’s altercation. In our original post on Tuesday, August 18th, we included Fox 5’s report that officers were shot at.

Gaithersburg police are reporting that a man is in custody after an incident this morning at 500 block of S. Frederick Avenue. Police initially were responding to a welfare check on the individual around 1:30am. After the area was cleared by police, they were called back to the scene around 2:45am after reports of hearing shots fired.

Detectives from the Gaithersburg Police Department – Investigative Section are investigating a shooting that occurred in the 500 block of S. Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg.

On Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at approximately 1:34 a.m., officers from the Gaithersburg Police Department responded to the area of 500 block of S. Frederick Avenue for the report of a check-the-welfare on an individual. After numerous attempts to make contact with a 29-year-old-male, police were eventually successful & cleared the area.

At approximately 2:48 a.m., officers from the Gaithersburg Police Department and the Montgomery County Police Department – 6th District responded to the sounds of shots fired in the 500 block of S. Frederick Avenue. Based on the previous encounter of the check-the-welfare individual, officers responded back to the initial call address & heard additional sounds of shots fired.

Additional patrol units responded and set up a perimeter around the apartment complex. Montgomery County Police – Emergency Response Team officers responded, along with SWAT officers & Negotiators to assist. No injuries were reported to police.

A short time later, the same individual from the previous check-the-welfare came out of the apartment & was taken into custody. The suspect, the 29-year-old-male, was transported to an area hospital. No one was injured and the investigation is ongoing.
