The curtain is rising on fall theater productions throughout the school system, at middle and high schools. Plan now to see these great performances, which run into early 2023. Middle Schools
Governor Wes Moore today visited the University of Maryland BioPark for a discussion and tour focused on biotechnology, innovation and economic development. Governor Moore was joined by University of Maryland Baltimore President Bruce E. Jarrell, M.D., F.A.C.S.; Biotechnology Innovation Organization Chief Executive Officer Rachel King; and numerous biotech and life sciences industry leaders to discuss opportunities for collaboration and promoting the innovation economy in Maryland.
“BioPark isn’t just a hub for discovering new, breakthrough treatments and cures–it’s also a key piece of our state’s economic engine,” said Gov. Moore. “The biotech industry contributes $20 billion to our state’s economy each year, and average annual life sciences incomes are significantly higher than other industries in Maryland. The biotech sector is going to create jobs, drive growth, and build an economy fit for the 21st century.”
Applications for the Montgomery Virtual Academy (MVA) for the 2024-2025 school are now open and due Friday, Nov. 3, 2023. Applications for the waitlist for Semester 2 of the Virtual Academy’s 2023-2024 year are also due on Nov. 3. Applications submitted after Nov. 3, 2023, but by Feb. 9, 2024, will be added to the 2024-2025 waitlist. Rising Grades 2-12 students can apply in ParentVUE. Current MVA families MUST also reapply in ParentVUE.
The MVA is a comprehensive online instructional program. Students will engage virtually and synchronously five days a week during the traditional school day. The MVA provides a high quality engaging and innovative instructional program for students who thrive in virtual learning. The primary focus of the MVA is to foster a safe, inclusive online learning environment that meets the individual needs of all students. Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating London Hoes, a missing 27-year-old. Hoes was last seen on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at approximately 10 a.m., in the area of Locbury Ct. in Germantown. She is 5’8, 150 lbs, with brown hair styled in locs, brown eyes, and was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, black frame glasses, carrying a red backpack

Program Overview
This 6 week Saturday tennis clinic is designed for middle school players who want to learn and improve their tennis skills in a fun and supportive environment. Players will build confidence on the court while developing strong fundamentals and enjoying the game with other students.
Col. Zadok Magruder High School (5939 Muncaster Mill Road) is hosting this year’s Marching Band Showcase on Saturday, Oct. 21, starting at 1 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Twelve high school bands will be participating: Clarksburg, Damascus, James Hubert Blake, Paint Branch, Seneca Valley, Rockville, Springbrook, Montgomery Blair, John F. Kennedy, Watkins Mill, Albert Einstein and Magruder.
Each band will perform separately on the football field. The grand finale piece will include members of all 12 bands, performing Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” This final performance will be entered into a contest that Metallica is sponsoring for marching bands. This year’s event will kick off with a middle school mass band performing the national anthem.
Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) will hold a fee-waived adoption event for dogs 40 pounds and over from Oct 15-31. The “Find Your Boo” adoption event is sponsored by Friends of Montgomery County Animals (FMCA).
The shelter’s population of large dogs has increased. If more people do not adopt, the shelter will once more reach critical capacity, as it did over the summer. Adopters are urgently needed for medium and large dogs. If anyone is considering adding a pet to the family, now is the time. Adopting is easy and will be made even easier with no adoption fee during the special event.
In partnership with the Montgomery County Family Justice Center Foundation, Takoma Park Police are collecting care packages and/or items to be donated to meet the immediate, critical needs that directly impact the safety, wellness, and/or healing of a victim of domestic violence and/or their children. Emergency care packages provide brand new toiletries and personal care items for each survivor of domestic violence and their children who walk through the doors of the Family Justice Center to receive services. Brand new stuffed animals, games, toys and books are also provided to every child who goes to the Family Justice Center. Please note that items donated should be new and unopened, if applicable.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) responded to a collision on Wednesday, October 11 in Potomac. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the collision occurred on Seven Locks Rd and Greentree Rd, in the Deerfield neighborhood. We will provide an update if additional information becomes available.

Per the State of Maryland (10.10.23): Governor Wes Moore today announced that Conair LLC—a leading developer, manufacturer, and marketer of health and beauty products and kitchen appliances—is planning to establish a distribution center in Washington County. The company will lease approximately 2.1 million square feet at a soon to be constructed facility at 10440 Downsville Pike and 17250 Sterling Road in Hagerstown, which is believed to become the largest single distribution center in the state.
“After meeting with Governor Moore, I am delighted to find a shared commitment to creating prosperity and fostering a thriving business environment,” said Conair LLC Chief Executive Officer and President Ronald T. Diamond.
Per Montgomery County: Landscapers are being asked by the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection to participate in a survey on using electric leaf blowers. The County recently approved a law that will phase out use of gas-powered leaf blowers starting July 1, 2025.
The survey, which seeks details of actual experiences of using electric leaf blowers and opinions of the blowers, will only take five minutes to complete. It also asks about a possible rebate program that could allow rebates for replacing gas-powered blowers with electric blowers to help offset financial burdens of making the transition.
The Clarks Lodge Bar & Grill is coming to 12011 Snowden Farm Pkwy, the former site of GrillMarx in Clarksburg. The Clarks Lodge is owned by the same restaurant group behind The Creek Lodge, which opened at 5566 Norbeck Rd in October 2022, as well as Brews & Barrels in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands.
The menu is expected to be similar to that of The Creek Lodge and feature a selection of steaks, seafood, pasta, and a full bar. The restaurant is hoping to open in early February.
