Montgomery College

Per Montgomery College: Montgomery College will bestow honorary degrees recognizing four outstanding members of the community at its 2023 Commencement exercises. Honorary degrees are the highest honor conferred by the College, awarded to people who have distinguished themselves with extraordinary achievements, made outstanding contributions to MC, or elevated the College in the eyes of the community.

The four degree recipients are: Ms. Kimmy Duong, vice chairman and chief financial officer, Pragmatics, Inc; Ms. Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, artist; Mr. C. Richard Mattingly, founder, CRM Advisors, LLC; and The Honorable Craig Rice, former Montgomery County Councilmember. Montgomery College’s commencement ceremony will be held Friday, May 19, 2023 at 10 a.m. on the Rockville Campus.


Germantown

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District Investigations Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Shoshana Tzvia Marcus, a missing 24-year-old from Germantown.

Marcus is missing from the 11400 block of Stoney Point Place. She may be traveling to the Baltimore area in a silver 2016 Toyota Corolla, bearing MD license plate, 5DM2382. Marcus is approximately 4-feet, 11-inches tall and weighs 99 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair. It is unknown what clothing she was last seen wearing. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.


Crime

The investigation by detectives revealed that the juvenile victim was at the McDonalds when he was approached by two juvenile suspects, who demanded his shoes. When the victim refused, he was punched in the face and his shoes were stolen. Then, the suspects left the scene in a Honda SUV.


Gaithersburg

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision in Gaithersburg on Thursday, May 4 around 4:30am. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, a single vehicle was driven off the road and into a wooded area near the Exit 10 (Montgomery Village Ave) ramp on northbound I-270.  Both occupants of the vehicle were extricated and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: The third annual Montgomery County Children’s Business Fair will return in August after a three-year hiatus due to the health crisis. Applications are now being accepted for the event that will take place from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Aug. 19. The fair, which will be held in Rockville Town Square, is open to ages 6-14. Applications are available at www.mocochildrensbusinessfair.org. The deadline to apply is June 2.

The fair will host 40 young entrepreneurs at an event open to the public. Those selected will have an opportunity to present innovative ideas and make sales pitches in a forum that will be judged.A panel of judges from the local business community and celebrity influencers will listen to the presentations.


Rockville

Per Montgomery County: The 11th Annual VisArts Rockville Arts Festival will be held Saturday, May 6, and Sunday, May 7, in Rockville Town Square. The free outdoor festival will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day and will feature original works from 130 artists and artisans. The festival will include Raku demonstrations by VisArts’ instructors, artwork by VisArts’ VisAbility Art Lab artists and artisanal fare.

The event will offer the opportunity to meet new artists and artists who are returning to the festival. They will display their creations of original pieces in a variety of media, including ceramics, digital art, drawing, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture and wood.


Bethesda

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call for a collision that occurred in the area of Old Georgetown Rd, between Edson Ln and Tuckerman Ln, in North Bethesda at approximately 7am Thursday morning.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the collision caused one of the vehicles, a pick-up truck, to overturn in the median on Old Georgetown Rd. One adult is being transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and some lanes are currently blocked.


MCFRS

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to an automatic alarm that was activated by a fire at Alexander House, located at 8560 2nd Ave in Silver Spring at approximately 11:30pm on Wednesday night.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the fire was controlled and extinguished by the sprinkler system that was automatically set off by the fire. The lone occupant of the apartment was located in a motorized wheelchair and was taken to the burn center with life-threatening injuries after suffering significant burns. The fire originated under the seat of the wheelchair and was caused by an unknown malfunction or failure of the motorized wheelchair. The adult patient is in their 70s and listed in critical condition. HazMat checked batteries on the wheelchair and advised they were not Lithium Ion. The other adult transported to the hospital was due to a medical emergency not related to the fire. There was approximately $50K in damage to contents and sprinkle activation.


Gaithersburg

To help raise awareness the City of Gaithersburg is conducting free deck maintenance inspections all month long: Each May, the International Code Council spearheads a national observation of Building Safety Month. To help raise awareness about the importance of safe & resilient construction, the City’s Permits & Inspections Division is conducting free deck maintenance inspections on single-family homes all month long. Per MCPS: The Montgomery County Alliance of Black School Educators (MCABSE) honored 27 graduating seniors during its annual Distinguished African-American Scholars and Community Leaders Awards Ceremony on April 26. The event was held at Rockville High School.

Distinguished Scholars and Community Leaders are committed to leadership in their high schools and communities; are passionate and committed to their education and demonstrate a deliberate pursuit of academic excellence; and are talented, positive and motivated.
