The Council stands in strong solidarity with our Jewish community and condemns all acts of hate and religious bigotry. There is no tolerance in Montgomery County for these hateful actions and abhorrent, violent imagery attacking the Jewish community. Earlier this month, the Council unanimously passed a resolution reaffirming our commitment to address antisemitism and protect our Jewish community from these awful acts of hate.

“These hateful acts are not only a desecration of public spaces but hurtful and damaging to the entire Montgomery County community. The Council extends its deepest gratitude to the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) for actively investigating these antisemitic acts and thanks the Department of Transportation for a swift response and clean-up.

Gaithersburg Police Warns of Phone Scam

Per the Gaithersburg PD: The Gaithersburg Police Department has recently received complaints about a phone scam in which the caller identifies themselves as an officer(s) with the Gaithersburg Police Department. During the calls, the scammer tells the victim that they have a warrant for their arrest and to avoid arrest, they should make payment using a gift card.

We would like to remind our community that this is a PHONE SCAM and that you should never give any personal information to the caller. In addition, the Gaithersburg Police Department does not call residents regarding arrest warrants and will never ask for payments to avoid an arrest. If you receive one of these scam phone calls, hang up immediately!

CAVA Digital Kitchen to Offer Free Bowls and Pitas at Community Event in Germantown Ahead of Grand Opening

CAVA will be holding a community event on Thursday, November 17 from 10:45am-2pm at the new CAVA Digital Kitchen in Germantown. The restaurant will be giving free bowls and pitas to people who download the CAVA app and register at www.eventbrite.com/e/germantown-community-day-tickets-465741464257. CAVA Digital Kitchen, which officially opens for business on Friday, November 18, differs from a traditional CAVA location in that there is no in-store ordering, all orders must be placed through the CAVA app. The restaurant does feature an indoor and outdoor dining area. Mobile Sports Betting in Maryland Likely to Launch by Thanksgiving; Governor Hogan Releases Statement

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Larry Hogan today issued the following statement after the Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Agency announced that the launch of mobile sports wagering in Maryland may take place in time for Thanksgiving:“Today we are proud to report that sports fans can finally plan for the official launch of mobile sports betting in the State of Maryland.

“To reach this point, we have had to overcome countless legal, political, and bureaucratic delays that threatened to push back the launch past the Super Bowl next year. It was completely unacceptable to me, and we spent months pressing for decisive action. Thanks to those efforts, and after repeated interventions by our administration, we now anticipate the launch of mobile sports betting this month, and we are cautiously optimistic that it will be in time for Thanksgiving.

Maryland State Police Release Video Footage Of Fatal Road Rage Shooting In Prince George’s County

Per the Maryland State Police: As the investigation continues into a fatal road rage incident that claimed the life of a tow truck driver in Prince George’s County, police are releasing video footage and asking anyone with relevant information to contact the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit.

On Saturday, March 19, 2022, Delonte Hicks, a 29-year-old tow truck driver, of Washington, D.C. was shot while traveling on eastbound Route 50 at Veterans Parkway in Prince George’s County. At approximately 5:45 p.m. police believe Hicks was exchanging words with the driver of a black passenger car (pictured below) when he pulled out a weapon and fired into the vehicle, striking Hicks. The gunman continued eastbound on Route 50.

Two People Injured After Shooting Outside of Montgomery County Restaurant

The investigation by detectives has revealed that the suspect engaged in a verbal argument with the victims inside of the restaurant. Once outside of the restaurant, the suspect shot one of the adult male victims in the upper body, hit the other adult male victim in the face and left the scene.

Antisemitic Graffiti Found in Bethesda

Police are investigating antisemitic graffiti that was found this morning in Bethesda near the intersection of Fleming Ave and Dickens Ave, at the entrance of the Bethesda Trolley trail. Additional graffiti was later found on a brick wall at Old Georgetown Road and Tuckerman Lane. Antisemitic vandalism also occurred at the Bethesda Trolley Trail back in August. According to MCPD, “The graffiti was reported at 6:30 this morning at the Bethesda Trolley Trail. MCPD is investigating, but at this time there are no suspects or descriptions. We are asking residents to check ring cameras or other home surveillance video. More information will be released when it’s available.” Feature photo courtesy of Laura Rosenberg Hosid.

County Executive Marc Elrich released the following statement: “For the second time in just over three months, the Bethesda Trolley Trail has been tagged with antisemitic graffiti in the Wildwood neighborhood. Montgomery County response teams are working to remove these hateful images as quickly as possible. I visited this site after the first incident in August and it deeply saddened me to see this. My Chief Administrative Officer, Rich Madaleno, visited this morning and was also appalled. To see this happen again just a few months later is truly upsetting. Additionally, we also learned of a second location, at Old Georgetown Road and Tuckerman Lane, where more antisemitic graffiti was tagged on a brick wall.

MCPS to Celebrate Longtime MoCo Board of Education Member and Teacher/Administrator, Dr. Judith Docca

A retirement celebration for Dr. Judith Docca, longtime Montgomery County Board of Education member who also spent 38 years as a teacher and administrator with MCPS, will be held at the Universities at Shady Grove (USG) on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Doors open at 5 p.m.; the program begins at 6 p.m. Individual tickets are available for $45; tickets are available here. Proceeds from ticket sales will be used to create an MCPS Educational Foundation scholarship in her name.

Council Vice President Glass Wins 2022 Phyllis Campbell Newsome Award

From the Office of Council Vice President Evan Glass: Montgomery County Council Vice President Evan Glass has been recognized by the Center for Nonprofit Advancement with the 2022 Phyllis Campbell Newsome Public Policy Leadership Award. Each year the Center awards a public official from each of the four jurisdictions of Washington, D.C., Virginia, Montgomery County and Prince George’s County who have made an impact on the nonprofit sector. Council Vice President Glass was commended for his public policy accomplishments and interest in increasing support for and collaboration with nonprofits.

“Our nonprofits are the backbone of our community, providing many of the vital educational, health, arts and social services in Montgomery County,” said Vice President Glass. “I am proud to be a partner in their important work and honored to receive the Phyllis Campbell Newsome Award.” The Center for Nonprofit Advancement works to strengthen, promote and represent nonprofit organizations in the metropolitan Washington region and helps their member organizations better meet the diverse needs of their communities.

Beyond MoCo: Three Dead and Two Injured After a Shooting Sunday Night at the University of Virgina

As of this writing, I am heartbroken to report that the shooting has resulted in three fatalities; two additional victims were injured and are receiving medical care. We are working closely with the families of the victims, and we will share additional details as soon as we are able. Our University Police Department has joined forces with other law enforcement agencies to apprehend the suspect, and we will keep our community apprised of developments as the situation evolves.

This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia. This is a traumatic incident for everyone in our community, and we have cancelled classes for today (Monday, Nov. 14). At this point only designated essential employees should report to work on Monday (all remote employees should continue to work remotely). If you are unsure of your status, please contact your supervisor.
