Sheriff Darren M. Popkin Will Not Seek Additional Term as Sheriff of Montgomery County

Montgomery County Sheriff Darren M. Popkin announced that he will not seek an additional term earlier this afternoon. Prior to his election on November 2, 2010 and re-election in 2014,  Sheriff Popkin was the Chief Deputy, second-in-command of the Sheriff’s Office for twelve years.

During a 30 year law enforcement career Sheriff Popkin rose through the ranks, serving in the Sheriff’s Office Criminal, Family, Civil and Court Services Divisions. Sheriff Popkin continues his involvement in innovative programs designed to reduce the incidents of domestic violence in the County. He was on the strategic planning committee responsible for designing and implementing the interagency Montgomery County Family Justice Center (FJC) which opened in May, 2009 and has since served over 6,000 clients. Sheriff Popkin continues his executive management role with the FJC.

Sheriff Popkin received a B.A. degree in Law Enforcement from the University of Maryland, College Park, and graduated from the former Robert E. Peary High School. Darren’s off-duty passion has been coaching boys’ and girls’ softball and basketball teams in local leagues and national tournaments. He is an active basketball player in the Montgomery County adult athletic league.

His full statement can be seen below:

“Upon thoughtful consideration, I have made the decision to not seek an additional term as the Sheriff of Montgomery County, Maryland. As my current term continues until December 1, 2022, you have my commitment as Sheriff to continue to serve our community, as I have done everyday for the past 37 years. I am so incredibly grateful to every member of the Sheriff’s Office, past and present, Assistant Sheriffs Chris McBain Calantonio & Bruce Sherman, friends, residents of the community, and most importantly my amazing family. After giving 10-12 hours or more every day during my career as Sheriff, it is time to devote some of that precious time to my wife Suzanne, my children, their significant others and my sweet new grandchild, Baby Miles.

Although the decision to not run for re-election was challenging, I feel a great sense of encouragement in the future of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office , as Chief Deputy Maxwell Uy, has filed his candidacy for the Office of Sheriff. Max’s subject matter experience, dedication and leadership throughout his career, is the reason that I am endorsing him and supporting his candidacy, as the next Sheriff of Montgomery County.

Thank you all for the amazing support for so many years, as Suzanne Ruben Popkin ❤️ and I are looking forward to the next chapter in our lives, starting in 12/2022.

Sincerely and Fondly,
Darren M. Popkin, Sheriff
Montgomery County, Maryland”
