Unclaimed $50,000, $20,000 and $10,000 Lottery Tickets Sold Last Week in MoCo

Several winning lottery tickets were sold this past week in Montgomery County that have yet to be claimed. They include a $50,000 winning Powerball ticket sold on October 5 at the W Express (5143 River Road) in Bethesda, a $20,004 winning Mega Millions ticket sold on October 5 at Safeway (403 Redland Blvd) in Rockville, a $10,000 Mega Millions ticket sold October 5 at Sugarloaf Wine Cellar (12955 Wisteria Drive) in Germantown, and a $10,000 Lucky Numbers ticket sold on October 3 at Ollie’s Beer, Wine & Deli (2011 Veirs Mill Road) in Rockville. All four tickets remain unclaimed as of October 11, according to the Maryland Lottery.

Winners of prizes larger than $25,000 must redeem their tickets at the Maryland Lottery Customer Resource Center in Baltimore, which is open by appointment only. Prizes of up to $5,000 can be claimed at any of more than 400 Expanded Cashing Authority Program (XCAP) locations. All Maryland Lottery retailers are authorized to redeem tickets up to and including $600. More information is available on the How To Claim page of mdlottery.com.

New Most Expensive Home For Sale in Montgomery County

Last week a new listing took the place of “most expensive home for sale in Montgomery County” when 8801 Fernwood Rd in Bethesda was listed for $12.5 million. The 15,000 SF home (photos below) is listed by Daniel Heider of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty and has 6 bedrooms to go along with 10 bathrooms (8 full, 2 half).

Walter Johnson Football Coach, Larry Hurd Jr., Named ‘Ravens High School Coach of the Week’

Larry Hurd, Jr., varsity head football coach of the Walter Johnson Wildcats (Bethesda, MD), has been named the Ravens High School Coach of the Week. Now in its 26th year of existence, Hurd is the fifth recipient of the award in 2022.

Last Friday (9/30), the Wildcats defeated the Northwest Jaguars, 10-7, for their first victory over their Montgomery County foe since 2009. Leading 3-0 in the fourth quarter, Walter Johnson secured the winning score on a 48-yard rushing touchdown from senior RB Elijah Barringtine. The result improves the Wildcats record to 4-1 on the season.

Bethesda Row Arts Festival Takes Place October 8 and 9

The 24th Bethesda Row Arts Festival, one of the Washington, DC area’s premier outdoor fine arts festivals, will take place on Saturday, October 8th (11am-6pm) and Sunday, October 9th (10am-5pm) at Bethesda Row (directions available below).

Over 165 artists from around the country will showcase their work across four blocks — including painting, drawing, jewelry, photography, sculpture, fabric, glass, ceramics, wood, and many other mediums. The event is free to attend, and family-friendly.

Remembering Journalist and Radio Host Mike Causey

Esteemed Federal Government columnist and radio host Norman “Mike” Causey passed away late last month at the age of 82.

At the Federal News Network and WTOP Radio studios in Friendship Heights, Causey had wrapped up recording a radio segment when he was found unresponsive in his office by a colleague. Valiant bystander CPR, as well as attempts from Montgomery County Fire & Rescue, proved unsuccessful.

Bethesda and Rockville Rank in Top 9% of Small Cities in America, According to Study

With nearly half of the population saying that they’d prefer to live in a suburban area, the personal-finance website WalletHub released its report on 2022’s Best Small Cities in America and two “cities” in MoCo, Bethesda and Rockville, are in the top 9% of over 1,300 cities/areas.

“To help Americans put down roots in places offering good quality of life and affordability, WalletHub compared more than 1,300 U.S. cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 across 43 key indicators of livability. They range from housing costs and school-system quality to restaurants per capita and the crime rate.” Below you’ll see some of the statistics for Bethesda (93rd percentile) and Rockville (91st percentile):

Sport & Health Gyms Will Rebrand to OneLife Fitness Later This Year

We spoke with a representative from a Montgomery County Sport & Health location on Friday who confirmed that all Sport & Health locations will be rebranding to Onelife Fitness gyms. Currently, Montgomery County is home to two Sport & Health locations- Bethesda and North Bethesda. We were told that notice will go out to existing members on October 1st announcing the change and providing additional information to members.

Back in 2014 US Fitness added Sport & Health to its portfolio of clubs, creating one of the largest health club companies in the country.  US Fitness, a partnership between industry veterans Kirk and John Galiani and New Evolution Ventures, operates Onelife Fitness and Crunch Fitness clubs throughout Virginia and Washington, DC under the leadership of the Galianis. Sport & Health operates health and fitness clubs in and around the Washington, DC.

Montgomery Mall Update: What’s New & What’s Coming Soon (October 2022 Edition)

Did you know that Kevin Plank, founder of Under Armour, grew up in Kensington? He is the youngest of five brothers born to William and Jayne Plank. His father was a prominent real estate developer who passed away in 1993. A local project of his was the Al Marah subdivision off River Road, just off of exit 39 on the Beltway.  His mother was the mayor of Kensington for 8 years, from 1974-1982. She went on to direct the Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs at the United States Department of State under President Ronald Reagan, and was a real estate broker until the early 2000s. Remodeled Under Armour Store Now Open in Montgomery Mall

Under Armour has reopened its newly renovated location in Montgomery Mall (7101 Democracy Blvd, Bethesda) and is offering a 20% discount promotion throughout the weekend. The store now features a youth clothing section, 3D foot scanner, digital boards, and upgraded fitting rooms.

Taste of Bethesda Cancelled

This morning we were able to confirm that The 31st annual Taste of Bethesda, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 1st, has been cancelled due to inclement weather.

The event typically features Bethesda’s best restaurants, five stages of live entertainment, an activity area for kids and more. The event was scheduled held along Norfolk, St. Elmo, Cordell, Del Ray and Auburn Avenues in Bethesda’s Woodmont Triangle. Taste of Bethesda would have been located just three blocks from the Bethesda Metro.
