Person Finds What Appears to Be Grenade While Doing Yard Work on Wednesday Evening

A person who was doing yard work in their backyard unearthed what appeared to be a grenade at approximately 5:30 pm on Wednesday evening on the 5300 block of Worthington Drive in Bethesda on Wednesday evening, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Serviced (MCFRS) Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer.

New Hybrid Roman-Detroit Style Pizza Concept Coming to Bethesda in July

Pizza TBD, a new pizza concept from Steve Salis and Catalog restaurants (Ted’s Bulletin, Federalist Pig), will open within Ensemble Digital Kitchen at 4856 Cordell Ave in Bethesda on July 5. Pizza TBD will serve a hybrid style pizza that combines the light and airy texture of Roman-style pizza with the pan cooking technique synonymous with Detroit Style pizza.

Maryland’s economic engine for technology companies, announced earlier this month that its Builder Fund invested $150,000 in AudioOne, Inc., a technology start-up based in Bethesda. TEDCO’s Builder Fund invests in and provides executive support to Maryland-based technology companies run by entrepreneurs who demonstrate economic disadvantage.

Bullis’ Trinity Franklin Named Girls’ Track & Field Athlete of the Year

Trinity Franklin, the 2022 New Balance Shot Put Indoor National Champion, was named the 2022 All-Met Track & Field Athlete of the Year by the Washington Post.

After the past two spring seasons were canceled or abbreviated, the spotlight was back on high school sports in the D.C. area in 2022. These athletes in particular raised their games when it mattered most and helped lift their schools to great success. Some will go on to compete collegiately next year, and others will return and try to replicate their standout seasons.

Churchill’s Eliot Dubick Named 2022 All-Met Boys’ Lacrosse Player of the Year

Churchill High School’s Eliot Dubick was named the 2022 All-Met Boys’ Lacrosse Player of the Year by the Washington Post. Dubick helped lead Churchill to the MoCo’s first State Championship in lacrosse (boys or girls) in county history.

The University of Maryland signee powered the Potomac public school to Montgomery County’s first state championship — for boys or girls — in one of the all-time best seasons for a player from the state. In Churchill’s 15-7 win over Broadneck for the 4A title, Dubick had four goals and six assists to tie the Maryland record for points in a championship game. In a semifinal the previous week, he scored or assisted on all of Churchill’s goals in its 10-8 win against Sherwood. Dubick finished with 73 goals and 94 assists, breaking Maryland’s single-season points record by 20.

Montgomery Parks to Host Online Community Meeting on New Neighborhood Park Planned in the Lyttonsville Area

Montgomery Parks invites the public to participate in a virtual community meeting about a new neighborhood park in the Lyttonsville community of Silver Spring. The meeting will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Parks staff will present information about the proposed new park and encourage input and questions from meeting attendees.

The site is currently being used as a staging area for purple line construction and will be transferred to M-NCPPC upon completion of the Purple Line. The intent of the project is to create a neighborhood green, and a rest stop with amenities along the Capital Crescent Trail while providing environmental benefits, accessibility, and social connections.

SAYKI is Now Open in Montgomery Mall, Replacing Recently Closed Michael Kors Location

SAYKI is now open in Montgomery Mall, taking over the location that was previously home to Michael Kors. SAYKI offer a variety of men’s clothing. According to SAYKI, the company is originally an Istanbul-based brand that dates back to 1924 under its parent company Hatemoglu. Currently a third-generation business, SAYKI has launched in the US in 2016 with its first store in Madison Avenue, New York. Michael Kors closed its Montgomery Mall location this past spring.

HalfSmoke Hopes to Open Montgomery Mall Location in Early July; Would Be the First Bar Ever in the Montgomery Mall Food Court

The upcoming HalfSmoke location in Montgomery Mall hopes to open in “two weeks”, according to a representative from the restaurant, which would make it an early July opening. HalfSmoke will be located in a kiosk in the food terrace that was the former home of Coldstone Creamery and more recently Gelato Galaxy.Though there have been separate restaurants off of the food court that serve alcohol, this will be the first restaurant/bar that’s actually located in the food court to serve alcohol.

The menu will consist of the best selling sausages and sides from their DC location, as well as boozy milkshakes and a funnel cake bar. HalfSmokes sister restaurant Butter Me Up opened its Montgomery Mall location last week. Butter Me Up is located in the old Aroma Espresso Bar location, which is downstairs near the Old Navy entrance and features “instagrammable” decor, will offer a menu that consists of a variety of breakfast sandwiches, toasts, sides, bowls, smoothies, and juices.

Suki Hana (Sushi) Hopes to Open Next Week in Montgomery Mall

Suki Hana will likely open next week, according to a representative that was at the kiosk earlier this week. Per its Arundel Mills description, “Suki Hana/Wokaholic brings the best of the Japanese and Chinese cuisine. Their delicious teriyaki dishes are cooked fresh to order on their teppanyaki grill” It looks as though the Montgomery Mall location will offer sushi as well as salads and appetizers, but will not offer teriyaki dishes.

The signage at the Montgomery Mall location originally referred to the restaurant as “Sarku Hana,” but was quickly updated to ‘Suki Hana’, since there is no connection between the restaurant and Sarku Japan, which is also located in the Montgomery Mall food court. Suki Hana is also opening a Wheaton Mall location.
