New UMD Basketball Coach Kevin Willard Buys Home in Potomac

New Maryland Men’s Basketball head coach Kevin Willard, and his wife Julie, have purchased a home in Montgomery County. The custom home constructed and designed by PKK Builders and GTM Architects is in Potomac and sold for $4.9 million in July, according to public record (photo below). Kevin Willard was named the new head coach of the Maryland Men’s Basketball program in March. Willard recently coached Seton Hall to its fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last six years the tournament was held, having won a regular-season conference championship, conference tournament championship and earning conference coach of the year, Willard is one of 10 active head coaches in the Power 6 conferences to achieve each of the accomplishments in the last six seasons.

The home is described as a “six-bedroom, seven-and-a-half bathroom stunner features over 11,000 square feet of thoughtful design and resort-styled landscaping with manicured backyard.” It was built in 2014 and boasts palatial front doors, wide plank oak hardwoods, a gourmet kitchen, stone patio with a complete and covered outdoor kitchen, waterfall, three-level elevator, his and her offices, heated master bathroom floors, and a lot more, according to the listing by Washington Fine Properties.

Montgomery County Sisters Die In Fire While Vacationing in New York

Jillian Wiener, 21, and Lindsay Wiener, 19, both of Potomac, were killed in an early morning house fire in the Southampton hamlet of Noyac around 3:30am Wednesday morning. The sisters, who are both graduates of The Holton Arms School in Bethesda, were vacationing with family, according to Lt. Susan Ralph of the Southampton Town Police Department.

According to The East Hampton Star, The father, identified as Washington Hebrew Congregation President Lewis Wiener, awakened to the sound of glass breaking and alerted the family to get out. He and his wife escaped the home, but when they realized the children hadn’t exited the home, the father attempted to gain entry back in. The flames, however, prevented him from gaining access, Southhampton Town Police Lt. Susan Ralph told reporters in a news conference. The children, including the girl’s brother Zachary, 23, were sleeping on the second floor, and the parents were sleeping on the first floor. Zachary Wiener jumped from a second-floor window to escape the flames.

Eater DC released a list of ’15 Top-Tier Vegan Restaurants Around D.C.’ and four restaurants locate din Montgomery County have made the list. According to the article, “There are chic, upscale tasting menus; homey vegan comfort food spots with hefty, filling plates; and massive, consistent fast-casual chains.“, while also noting that quality vegan meals can be found at many restaurants that didn’t make the list. Domonic A. Caguay was last seen on Sunday, July 31, 2022, in the 5100 block of Dudley Ln.

Caguay is approximately 5-feet, 6-inches tall and weighs 120 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black tank top and shorts.

Four Defendants Facing Federal Charges for Mail Theft From Montgomery County and Possession of United States Postal Service Keys

Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of Maryland: A federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging four defendants with theft of mail matter and the unlawful possession of postal service keys. The indictment was returned on July 21, 2022 and unsealed today upon the defendant’s arrests. Charged in the indictment are:

• Eyalan Owona, age 21, of Upper Malboro, Maryland;

Annual Monitoring Report for Bethesda Downtown Plan Presented to the Planning Board

The Montgomery County Planning Department briefed the Montgomery County Planning Board on the update to the implementation of the 2017 Bethesda Downtown Sector Plan at their meeting on July 28, 2022. The 2022 Annual Monitoring Report details the plan’s progress between May 2021 and May 2022 on school capacity, new parks and open spaces and transportation adequacy. The report also presents information on recent development activity in downtown Bethesda and the status of the Bethesda Overlay Zone (BOZ).

District Falafel to Open in Old Fu Shing Cafe Location Next to Montgomery Mall

District Falafel will be taking over the location that was most recently home to The Wok Chinese Kitchen and previously home to longtime favorite Fu Shing Cafe at 10315 Westlake Drive in the Westlake Crossing shopping center, located next to Montgomery Mall in Bethesda. The restaurant hopes to open by the end of September.

Fu Shing Cafe closed permanently in Westlake Crossing in July of 2019. Soon after Soy Kitchen was announced as the restaurant that would be taking its place, with signage going up, but that signage was replace with signage for The Wok about a year later. The Wok opened in November 2020. A menu for District Falafel’s food truck, and a couple photo of menu items, can be seen below:

Arts and Social Justice Fellows Present Culminating Projects This Sunday at AMP by Strathmore

Created in conjunction with Strathmore and Woolly Mammoth’s co-presentation of Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower by Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon, the fellowship engaged eight high school fellows in six months of study, discussions, and creation at the intersection of arts and social change.

Their research and reflection covered Butler’s Parable novels, as well as many other works and creators including Audre Lorde, Sonic Youth, Terence Trent D’Arby, Danez Smith, Robin DiAngelo, Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, the film “Sorry to Bother You,” the TV show “American Gods,” and more.

Mike Tyson’s Cannabis Brand Expands National Footprint to Four New Markets, Including Maryland (Includes Two Montgomery County Locations)

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson’s cannabis brand, Tyson 2.0, announced its launch in four additional markets: Arizona, Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania with Columbia Care. The expansion into Maryland will include two Montgomery County locations– in Chevy Chase and Rockville. Mike Tyson previously lived in Montgomery County, where his former home at Congressional Country Club sold last summer.

Per the press release: Columbia Care is Tyson 2.0’s exclusive national cultivation, manufacturing and distribution partner in the markets where it operates. The partnership was first announced in October of 2021, with products hitting shelves in November of 2021. Tyson 2.0 is now available in nine Columbia Care markets, with more planned in the coming months.
