ABC’s 20/20 recently revisited a Montgomery County case that haunted the Chevy Chase community for more than two decades– the 2001 murder of 49-year-old Leslie Preer. The episode, titled “First Comes Love, Then Comes Murder,” walked through how advances in DNA technology helped bring long-awaited closure to Preer’s family. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded Thursday to a fatal house fire in the 7000 block of Persimmon Tree Road near Eggert Road in Cabin John.

According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, about 60 firefighters extinguished a basement fire and located an unconscious adult inside within minutes of arrival. Despite extensive efforts to revive the victim, the individual did not survive.


Update: Officials confirmed that one adult died in the fire. Two adults have been displaced, and damages are estimated at less than $100,000, including $50,000 to the structure and $20,000 to contents. Investigators are still working to determine the fire’s origin and cause, as well as conducting an ongoing death investigation. Notably, there was no working smoke alarm in the home.
