Local Students Extend Invite to 16th Annual Black History Month Celebration

The Students of Minds In Motion Child Care, Scotland Community, and the Judith Resnik Elementary School extend an invitation to celebrate Black History Month with a night filled with knowledge, food, poetry, and performances. This free program will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023, from 7 – 9 pm at the Resnik Elementary School, Gaithersburg, MD, and includes dinner from local restaurants. The program will recognize icons of Black History including Viola Davis, Rosa Parks, Michelle Obama, Guy Bluford, Missy Elliot, Cynthia Erivo, and Katherine Dunham. Students will present on their achievements throughout the event.

Performances will be led by various youth groups including students of Minds in Motion Child Care, Scotland Community, Bells Mill Elementary School, Cabin John Middle School, Damascus Elementary School, Goshen Elementary School, Judith Resnik Elementary School, Winston Churchill High School, and Watkins Mill Elementary School. The highlight of the evening will be the Step Performance featuring Kristopher Paul, Noah Gleaton, Diezel Duckett, Sidoine Djimbou, Braedan Lynk, Bebo Aly, and Ahmed Hassan.

Scotland Community Juneteenth Heritage Festival Announced

Celebration at Cabin John to Benefit the Scotland AME Zion Church Restoration

Celebrating the past and present of the first places African-Americans owned land in Montgomery County, the Scotland community of Potomac, Md., is announcing a significant expansion of its annual Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival for 2023. Featuring a children’s carnival and music performance, as well as art exhibitions, food, sports, and presentations on Black history in this region, the events for the federal holiday on Monday, June 19, will be spread across the Cabin John Regional Park, Cabin John Village, and the Scotland community on Seven Locks Road.

Dan Snyder’s MoCo Home Listing Now Available to Browse ($49 Million)

Last week we let you know that Dan Snyder was putting his Montgomery County home up for sale, for what would be a DMV record breaking $49 million if it sold for the asking price. Now, the home listing is available to browse on any real estate website. It is being listed by listed by Heather Corey and Michael Rankin of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty.

The home, located at 11900 River Rd., has five bedrooms and eight bathrooms spread across 30,000 SF. The French-style single family home sits on a lot size of just over 9.6 acres and is located in Potomac. It comes at a price of $1,633 per square foot, with an annual tax $192,631 (over $75k more than the $117,345 median household income in Montgomery County).

Whitman Alumna Abby Meyers Honored by Maryland Basketball on Senior Day

Abby Meyers is Whitman High School’s all-time leading scorer with over 1,700 points and was the Ivy League Player of the Year last year before transferring to the University of Maryland for her senior season. Yesterday she was honored at  Senior Day as #8 Maryland took on Illinois.

Meyers didn’t disappoint, scoring 14 of her 18 points in the third quarter for the Terps, helping lead the team to an 81-72 victory and improving to 13-0 all-time against Illinois. In an interview with the Diamondback last month, she credited her  junior and senior years at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda as helping her evolve as a teammate and leader, playing a big role in being named a captain ahead of her first season at Maryland.

F45 Training Now Open in Potomac

F45 Training, an Australian franchisor and operator of fitness centers based in Austin, Texas, has opened a new  Montgomery County location in Potomac. The fitness center opened at 1087 Seven Locks Rd in Potomac Woods Plaza, taking over the location that was previously home to BB&T bank.

The fitness center recently announced it will open its Olney location on February 25th in the 3,200 SF space that was previously home to Pet Valu in Olney’s Fair Hill Shopping Center (previously Olney Town Center) at 18100 Town Center Drive, Unit 8115. The upcoming Germantown location will open in the 3,299 SF space that was previously home to Da Marco The Italian Place at The Shops at Seneca Meadows shopping center, next to Wegmans and across from Siriwan Thai. Da Marco closed its Germantown location in April of 2020, following 4 years in Germantown. Part of the space is still available for lease and will include the outdoor dining patio for a future restaurant. Two new Bethesda locations are also coming soon.

Students From Seneca Valley and Sherwood Team Up with CAVA to Serve Four-Course Meal; Raise Over $5200

Working with industry leaders, hospitality and restaurant management students at Seneca Valley and Sherwood high schools served a four-course meal at a pop-up restaurant in Potomac on Feb. 3. The school was above to raise over $5,200 from the event (photos available below).

The dinner was an opportunity for the students to experience the variety of activities necessary to stage a sophisticated experience—from social media and ticket sales to front-of-house management and heart-of-house hustle. With a team of chefs from CAVA, the students designed, prepared and served the dinner at the Falls Road Golf Course Café on Friday.

Dan Snyder Puts Potomac Home on the Market; Asking Price Would Be Most Expensive Home Sale in DMV History

Back in November 2021, we reported that the $48 million sale of River View (7979 E. Boulevard Drive in Alexandria, VA)– a 16,000 square foot home with an additional carriage home had set a new record for the most expensive home sale in DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) history. The home was bought buy Montgomery County native and owner of the Washington Commanders, Dan Snyder. Now, with the sale of the Commanders looming, Snyder is selling his Potomac, MD home (named River House) for $49 million, according to a Biz Journals report. This is one million more than he purchased River View for in 2021, and would be the most expensive home sale in DMV history if it sells for asking price or more.

Per the report, River House on River Rd. in Potomac, “spans just over 15 acres and features a 30,000-square-foot French château-inspired home completed in 2004. Snyder bought the majority of the Potomac River-fronting lot, at 11900 River Road, in July 2000 for $8.64 million from the estate of Jordan’s King Hussein and Queen Noor, then expanded with the acquisition of six adjoining parcels.” It is being listed by listed by Heather Corey and Michael Rankin of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty. Police and Family Concerned For Missing 78-Year-Old

Pahwa is approximately 5-feet, 4-inches tall and weighs 150 pounds. He has thinning salt and pepper hair. He was last seen wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt, dark colored jacket, gray sweatpants and a black hat.  Police and family are concerned for his welfare.

Ten Montgomery County Restaurants Currently Participating in Winter Restaurant Week

Winter Restaurant Week runs from January 16 to January 22, with ten Montgomery County restaurants participating. Founding Farmers, J. Hollinger’s, Lia’s, all three Matchbox locations, Morton’s, Spanish Diner, The Daily Dish, and Dish & Dram will be the participating MoCo restaurants. Per the Metropolitan Restaurant Week website:

“With some of the nation’s best know chefs, restaurateurs and rising culinary stars helming eateries in our region, Metropolitan DC is known for its restaurants.
