County Council Approves Potomac Overlook Historic District

The Amendment to the Master Plan for Historic Preservation is the first Mid-Century Modern historic district in Montgomery County

Montgomery Planning has announced the approval by the Montgomery County Council of an Amendment to the Master Plan for Historic Preservation of the Potomac Overlook Historic District. The Amendment was approved on April 19 by the County Council and covers nineteen houses located approximately two-and-a-half miles to the southwest of downtown Bethesda and overlooking the Potomac River. Potomac Overlook is the first Mid-Century Modern historic district in Montgomery County.

County to Host PGA Wells Fargo Championship May 5-8 at TPC Potomac at Avenel and KPMG Women’s PGA Championship June 23-26 at Congressional

Per Montgomery County:

The region has not hosted a professional golf tournament since the 2018 PGA Quicken Loans National was held at TPC Potomac. After this year, the Wells Fargo Championship will return to its home base at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. Quail Hollow is hosting the Presidents Cup in September (following a postponement in 2021 because of the pandemic), compelling the PGA Tour to find an alternate site.

Yirasai Opens in Park Potomac Today

Yirasai Sushi opens today at its new location at 12525 Park Potomac Ave. Building G in Park Potomac. The restaurant is taking over the space formerly occupied by Elevation Burger.

Yirasai was previously located at 5110 Ridgefield Road in the Westwood Shipping Center in Bethesda.

Rory McIlroy Will Compete in Wells Fargo Championship at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm Next Month

Alex Flum of WDVM reports that Rory McIlroy, currently ranked 7th in the world, will compete in the Wells Fargo Championship at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm in May.

McIlroy is coming off of a second place finish at the Masters, where he finished 3 strokes behind winner Scottie Scheffler.

The Pretzel Bakery is Now Open

Back in November we let you know that The Pretzel Bakery, which opened it’s DC location at 257 15th Street SE in DC back in 2012, was coming to Cabin John Village in Potomac. The bakery is located in the space formerly occupied by the Hair Cuttery at 7961 Tuckerman Ln. According to its website, the Pretzel Bakery serves small batch, hand-rolled, Philadelphia-style soft pretzels fresh-out-of-the-oven all day. In addition to traditional pretzels, they also sell pretzel dogs, pretzel calzones, stuffed pretzel “bombs”, and pretzel sliders.

Potomac: Yirasai Sushi Announces Opening Date

Yirasai was previously located at 5110 Ridgefield Road in the Westwood Shipping Center in Bethesda.

Per the Yirasai website, “Kim’s Yirasai Sushi and Café is owned and operated by Mr. Kim. He took over the restaurant from the previous owner in 2004 and has worked hard to make Yirasai a neighborhood gem.”

Montgomery County Police Detectives Continue to Investigate Auto Theft in Potomac

Per MCPD:

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 2nd District Investigative Section are investigating an auto theft that occurred on December 16, 2021, in Potomac. Detectives have released photos of the suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

Bullis Alumnus Dwayne Haskins Died This Morning After Getting Hit By a Vehicle in Florida

Updated at 12:30am to reflect that Dwayne Haskins, Jr. was hit by a dump truck, rather than a car as was initially reported by Adam Schefter.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Bullis alumnus Dwayne Haskins, Jr. died this morning after getting hit by a vehicle (multiple reports are now stating it was a dump truck) in South Florida, per Haskins’ agent Cedric Saunders in. He would have turned 25 in May.

Man Sentenced For Murdering his Mother in 2018

Judge Harry Storm sentenced defendant, Kevin McGuigan, 24, of Rockville, MD, to life in prison suspend all but 80 years. On December 14^th, 2021, McGuigan pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for the death of his mother, Jaclyn McGuigan.

77 Year Old Montgomery County Man Wins $100K From Scratch-Off After Hospital Stay

While recovering from his surgery, the 77-year-old discovered he enjoyed playing the scratch-off gifts. He added instant tickets to his Lottery mix when he got back into his routine of playing Powerball, Mega Millions, Cash4Life and Multi-Match. One of those scratch-offs in the mix was the fifth edition of the $100,000 Crossword game, a $10 instant ticket that gave him its top prize of $100,000.

The 77-year-old, accompanied by his wife of 52 years, walked into the Lottery Winner’s Circle with the aid of a cane after claiming his prize. He plans to use the windfall to help family members with some expenses. The Montgomery County resident has three sons and five grandchildren, and, as he put it, “Everybody needs a little help.”

Traffic: Collison Involving Bus Closes Tuckerman Lane at Seven Locks Road, No Students on Bus at Time of Collision
