Beyond MoCo: Maryland State Police Searching For Suspect Vehicle In Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash In Anne Arundel County

Per the Maryland State Police: Maryland State Police are searching for the suspect vehicle and driver believed to be connected to a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred this morning in Anne Arundel County. Shortly before 1:55 a.m., troopers from the Maryland State Police Glen Burnie Barrack responded to the area of southbound I-97 at Maryland Route 648 for a report of a struck pedestrian. According to a preliminary investigation, the victim, identified as Delroy Roderick Ben, 54, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, was struck by what investigators believe was a 2010-18 black Audi A8 or S8 (stock photo of the suspect vehicle pictured below). Ben, who was on the road for unknown reasons, was declared deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Audi failed to remain at the scene. Investigators believe the vehicle will have damage to the right front corner and is missing the passenger side mirror. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation.

MoCo Resident-Owned Gentleman’s Club (Located in DC) Will Be First in U.S. to Have a Sportsbook Inside

Last February, we let you know that Elys Game Technology, an interactive gaming and sports betting technology company, announced an agreement for The Cloakroom (“Cloakroom”) to operate a sportsbook with located at 476 K St. NW, Washington DC, 20001. The Cloakroom is a gentleman’s club that is co-owned by Montgomery County native and resident Tony Cavasilios. “I’m bringing something to our region that has not been done anywhere. This will be the first Gentleman’s club in the country that will have a sports book inside of it.” said Cavasilios.

A soft launch is expected ahead of the busy New Year’s Eve sports weekend with first wagers planned at the Cloakroom and Over Under Sportsbook Rooftop Lounge (“Over Under”) at 4:00 P.M. Route 136 was closed for approximately eight hours for the investigation and repair of the utility pole.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

MoCo-Based Catalyst Hot Dogs to Take Over Kitchen at Denizens Riverdale Park

“Just a kid from Jersey with a dream.” Chris Van Jura opened Catalyst Hot Dogs in late 2020 as a new food truck/trailer that serves New Jersey style hot dogs. The trailer has operated across Montgomery County and surrounding areas for two years and starting January 5th Catalyst Hot Dogs will be taking over the kitchen at the Riverdale Park location (4550 Van Buren St., River Dale Park, Prince George’s County) of MoCo-based Denizens Brewing. The food trailer will continue to operate. Photos of the hot dogs available below.

Beyond MoCo: State Police Respond To Plane Crash In Anne Arundel County

Metropolitan area or other areas nearby. While they may not be in Montgomery County, we believe some readers might find this kind of news interesting.)

Per the Maryland State Police: Maryland State Police are on the scene of a single engine plane crash in Anne Arundel County. The pilot and sole occupant is identified as Steve Couchman, 71, of Frederick, Maryland. He was transported by ambulance to Anne Arundel Medical Center where he is receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. The plane involved is a Piper Cherokee single engine plane.

Beyond MoCo: Georgetown University Hires Adnan Syed To Work on Prison Reform

Per Georgetown University: On Dec. 12, Syed began work as a program associate for the Prisons and Justice Initiative (PJI), a Georgetown organization that addresses the root causes and consequences of mass incarceration and offers educational programs and training for incarcerated individuals and returning citizens. In his new role, Syed supports PJI programming, including Georgetown’s Making an Exoneree class, in which students reinvestigate decades-old wrongful convictions, create short documentaries about the cases and work to help bring innocent people home from prison.

Syed’s own story was reinvestigated and brought to the attention of millions of listeners after Serial, a podcast from the creators of This American Life, uncovered new details in his case in 2014. Syed had been arrested and wrongfully convicted of the murder of his high school classmate, Hae Min Lee, in 1999. This fall, a judge vacated his life sentence and a month later, prosecutors announced they were dismissing charges against Syed based on newly tested DNA evidence that excluded him. Syed was represented by Erica Suter (L’03), who directs the University of Baltimore’s Innocence Project Clinic, and he was later added to the National Registry of Exonerations.

Murder Suspect Awaiting Extradition to United States in Connection With 2012 Death of Bethesda Woman

Per MCPD: After twelve years on the run, murder fugitive Jorge Rueda Landeros has been arrested in Mexico and charged in connection to the 2010 murder of a Bethesda woman. On Monday, October 25, 2010, Sue Marcum was found dead in her Bethesda home. Through the course of the investigation, detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division determined that Rueda Landeros had a personal and financial relationship with Marcum and was allegedly involved in her murder. Following the homicide, he fled to Mexico, or Central America.

In December 2022, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) – Baltimore Field Office received information that Rueda Landeros was likely living in Guadalajara, Jalisco.

Maryland State Police Investigating Fatal Three-Vehicle Crash In Allegany County

Per the Maryland State Police: Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal three-vehicle crash in which one person died Tuesday evening in Allegany County. Shortly before 7:25 p.m. on Tuesday, troopers from the Maryland State Police Cumberland Barrack responded to westbound Interstate-68 at Route 36 in Frostburg, Maryland for a report of a multi-vehicle crash with injuries. According to a preliminary investigation, a 2017 Ford Explorer was driving westbound on I-68 when the vehicle rear-ended a tractor-trailer.

The crash sent the Ford Explorer into the next lane, where it was struck on the driver’s side by a 2004 Ford F350 truck. The driver of the Ford Explorer, identified as Corey Douglas McElroy, 31, of Friendsville, Maryland, was flown by Maryland State Police Helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital, where he was declared deceased. Upon further investigation, it was learned that McElroy was a deputy sheriff for the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office, and he was driving an unmarked departmental vehicle at the time of the crash.

Beyond MoCo: Body-Worn Camera Footage from November’s Fatal Police-Involved Shooting in Frederick Released

Per the Maryland State’s Attorney’s Office: The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Office of the Attorney General today released the body-worn camera footage from the fatal police-involved shooting that occurred on November 29, 2022, in Frederick, Maryland. The decedent was previously identified as 23-year-old Aaron Mensah, of Frederick, Maryland.

The Independent Investigations Division will generally release the name of the decedent and discharging officers within 48 hours of the incident, though that period may be extended if there is a specific reason to believe that an officer’s safety is at risk. The deputies who discharged their firearms were not equipped with body-worn cameras. Other officers on the scene were wearing body-worn cameras, which recorded portions of the incident. The Independent Investigations Division will generally release body camera footage within 14 days of an incident. There may be situations where more than 14 days is necessary, including if investigators need more time to complete witness interviews, if there are technical delays caused by the need to shield the identities of civilian witnesses, or to allow family members to view the video before it is released to the public.
