Raising Cane’s First D.C. Metro Area Location is Now Open

At the beginning of the year we let you know of Raising Cane’s planned expansion into the D.C. metropolitan region, with the first restaurant planned for Sterling, VA at 45545 Dulles Eastern Plaza. Raising Cane’s officially opened its first Metro area restaurant on Tuesday, December 13th. Raising Cane’s aims to open 14 stores in the next year, stretching from suburban Baltimore to the Richmond area, with more to on tap for 2023 including Bowie, Dumfries, Manassas and Springfield. No Montgomery County locations have been announced yet.

Founded by Todd Graves in 1996 in Baton Rouge, La., Raising Cane’s has more than 460 restaurants in 27 states, Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates with multiple new restaurants under construction. The international expansion began in 2015. The menu is simple and focuses on chicken finger combos , chicken finger sandwiches, crinkle-cut fries, Texas toast, sweet/iced tea, and Cane’s sauce. Beyond MoCo: Grillmarx to Open College Park Location

Grillmarx Steakhouse & Raw Bar has announced it will be opening a new location in College Park, MD. Grillmarx has additional locations at 18149 Town Center Dr in Olney and 10175 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia. In August we reported that the Grillmarx in Clarksburg, located at 12011 Snowden Farm Pkwy, would be undergoing a rebrand as the restaurant is no longer affiliated with the other Grillmarx locations. Currently a timeline for the rebrand hasn’t been set. We’re told the Clarksburg restaurant will remain similar to what it is currently, but the team will implement more of the Houston’s feel with additional upgrades.

Gaithersburg Man Arrested on Firearms Charges in Frederick

Per the Frederick Police Department: On Dec. 9, 2022, at approximately 2:16 p.m., The Frederick Police Department received several calls for a disturbance and the sound of gunshots. Callers advised that an altercation took place around the area of Key Parkway and Willowdale Drive. Officers responded to the area, but did not immediately locate any subjects that were believed to be involved. Patrol officers continued to canvass the surrounding area and eventually observed a subject that matched the clothing description of one of the possible suspects in an outside common area of a nearby apartment complex. Officers made contact with the subject and checked the surrounding area where he was observed. Within close proximity of the subject, officers found a loaded handgun hidden under a children’s toy. The subject immediately began to flee on foot from officers when they discovered the handgun. The subject ran to the area of McCain Drive and entered into an underground water culvert. The culvert travelled underground from McCain Drive to an area South of Route 40 near the Alternate Route 40 split.

Officers positioned themselves at both ends of the culvert and with the assistance of a Frederick County Sheriffs Office K9 Team, they entered and began to search for the suspect. As the officers were making their way through the culvert, the suspect emerged at the other end and was arrested. The suspect was in possession of a New Jersey ID card, however officers determined the ID card was fake and the name was not the suspect’s correct name. Officers eventually fully identified him as Gervon William Norris (11-08-1993) of Gaithersburg, Maryland. Officers discovered that Norris had an active arrest warrant through the Anne Arundel County Sheriffs Office for failing to appear in court. Officers also learned that Norris is prohibited from possessing firearms due to previous criminal convictions.

Father and Son Convicted of Theft for Operation of Ponzi Scheme Involving Family and Friends in Baltimore

Per the Maryland Office of the Attorney General: Attorney General Brian E. Frosh today announced the convictions of Eugene Fusting, 79, and Christopher Ian Fusting, 52, of Baltimore relating to their operation of a Ponzi-like investment scheme between 2012 and 2019. Eugene and Christopher Fusting were found guilty of Theft Scheme Over $100,000 and Conspiracy to Commit Theft Scheme Over $100,000 after pleading guilty in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City. Judge Melissa Phinn sentenced both Eugene and Christopher Fusting to 30 years in prison, all of which were suspended. Eugene will serve 18-months of home detention and Christopher will serve 12-months of home detention. Judge Phinn also ordered the Fustings to serve 5 years of supervised probation and pay restitution in the amount of $808,745.00.

Both Eugene and Christopher Fusting held brokerage accounts in their individual names at an online securities and brokerage firm where they would, on occasion, wire a portion of the funds they received. However, instead of utilizing these accounts to invest the funds, the brokerage accounts served as a conduit for investor funds, where investors’ money sat until the balances on the Fustings’ individual bank accounts waned, at which time funds were wired out of the brokerage accounts back to the personal accounts and spent on personal expenses. Neither Fusting had any additional source of income and relied on the stolen funds to support their lifestyles.

Beyond MoCo: D.C. Ranked in Top Ten of ‘2022’s Best Cities For New Year’s’ List

With New Year’s around the corner and 70% of Americans spending at least $50 on food and drinks for the occasion, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2022’s Best Cities for New Year’s and D.C. has made the top ten, coming in at #7.

To determine which cities are the best for safely ringing in the new year without breaking the bank, WalletHub compared the 100 biggest cities across 29 key metrics. The data set ranges from safety and vaccination rates to quality food options and costs.

USC Quarterback Caleb Williams Becomes First Heisman Trophy Winner From the DMV

Caleb Williams, a Prince George’s County native who attended high school at Gonzaga College High in DC, has won the Heisman Trophy. He is the first player from the DMV to win the prestigious college football award, after leading the USC Trojans to an 11-2 record as a sophomore. Williams beat out C.J. Stroud of Ohio State, Stetson Bennett of the University of Georgia, and Max Duggan of TCU to win the Heisman Trophy

Williams threw 4,075 yards, 37 touchdowns, and just 4 interceptions this year, while running for 10 more touchdowns. Williams enrolled at Oklahoma in the spring of 2021 after graduating a semester early from high school, and emerged as the Sooners’ starting quarterback by mid-season, proving to be one of the nation’s premier freshmen in 2021. He transferred to USC last year and earned the starting job.

Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips Now Open at the Wharf in DC; Hell’s Kitchen Restaurant Coming Soon

Gordon Ramsay’s Fish & Chips is now open at 665 Water Street (at the base of the Williams & Connolly building) at The Wharf in DC. Originally, Ramsay planned on opening his Fish & Chips restaurant at 501 Seventh Street, Northwest, DC, but decided he would open a bottomless pizza restaurant there instead (coming soon). The fast casual Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips menu offers six different types of combos, including a fish, shrimp, and chicken combo, as well as fishwich, chickenwich, and fish & shrimp combo, ranging in price from $14.99-$18.99. You have the option to “hook it up” by adding either extra fish, shrimp or chicken ($3.99-$5.99). Each combo comes with your choice of two sauces, and you can choose between Gordon’s tartar, curry & mango, sriracha aioli, southwest ranch, dijon mayo, and cocktail sauce. Chips are also available on their own, either plain or in three different versions of “dirty chips.” For dessert you can choose either a sticky toffee shake or a biscoff shake. Alcoholic beverages (beer and wine) are also available for those 21+.

Beyond MoCo: One Apprehended, One-at-Large, None Injured in Officer-Involved Shooting in Frederick

Per the Frederick Police: At approximately 8:20 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, 2022, the Frederick Police Department received multiple reports of gunfire in the Unit Block of South Market Street near the area of W. All Saints Street. The calls described two individuals in a confrontation that eventually escalated to the pair exchanging gunfire with each other.

Upon arriving at the scene, a Frederick Police Department officer observed one of suspects reported to be involved in the exchange fleeing the scene and discharged his department-issued firearm at one of the suspects. One of the suspects discarded his firearm and raised his hands in the air. He was taken into custody without incident. No one involved in the incident was injured.

Beyond MoCo: Maryland State Police Investigating Two Fatal Shootings In Dorchester County

Per the Maryland State Police: Maryland State Police are investigating two fatal shootings which occurred a few hours apart Thursday evening in Dorchester County. At about 7:15 p.m. last night, the Cambridge Police Department responded to the area of Pleasant Street and Race Street in Cambridge, Maryland for a gunshot victim. Officers located the victim, identified as Taijay Brian Daniels, 24, of Cambridge, Maryland, who had been shot multiple times. Daniels was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit was contacted by Cambridge Police to assume the investigation. According to a preliminary investigation, an unknown black male wearing a black jacket, dark jeans, black shoes and black book bag robbed Daniels at gunpoint. During the course of the robbery, the gunman shot Daniels before fleeing the area.

Oversight Committee Releases Final Report on Investigation into the NFL’s Handling of Washington Commanders’ Hostile Workplace Culture

Investigation Reveals Troubling Scope of Harassment and Misconduct at the Team, and NFL and Commanders’ Leadership Attempts to Cover It Up

Washington, D.C. (December 8, 2022)— Today, Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, Chairwoman of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, released a staff report entitled, Conduct Detrimental: How the NFL and Washington Commanders Covered Up Decades of Sexual Misconduct. The report presents the Committee’s findings from its year-long investigation into the Washington Commanders’ (Commanders) decades-long toxic workplace culture, the National Football League’s (NFL) handling of the investigation into this matter, and the NFL’s role and record in setting and enforcing workplace standards across the League.
