Beyond MoCo: Maryland Renaissance Festival Returns August 27

The Maryland Renaissance Festival, which takes places annually at 1821 Crownsville Rd in Annapolis, returns this Saturday for their 46th season. The festival will be open weekends from August 27 through October 23 and tickets can be purchased at www.rennfest.com. Per the event’s website:

“The 27 acre Village of Revel Grove comes to life each autumn with more than 200 professional performers on ten stages, a 3,000 seat arena with armored jousting on magnificent steeds and streets filled with village characters. Join His Most Royal Highness King Henry VIII in the forests and glades with over 140 artisans exhibiting crafts in their own renaissance shops, five taverns featuring cool libations, 42 food and beverage emporiums providing a vast array of succulent and sweet treats to sate even the most hearty of appetites.

Beyond MoCo: Latest Update on the 126,000 SF Indoor Water Park Coming to Maryland

Mid-Atlantic families will have something fun to howl about as Great Wolf Lodge, North America’s largest family of indoor water park resorts, has announced that its newest resort in Perryville, MD (located in Cecil County, northeast of Baltimore City) is scheduled to open in August 2023. Great Wolf Lodge Maryland will be the company’s 20th resort in North America, and their largest. It will offer 700 family-friendly suites, a 126,000-square-foot indoor water park, a 57,000 square-foot entertainment center, and 12,000 square-feet of conference space. The resort is currently offering 25% off reservations at www.greatwolf.com/maryland.

Great Wolf Lodge, which broke ground in July 2021, will sit on 48 acres on the western edge of Cecil County, for what is being dubbed as “a convenient family getaway destination for guests living throughout Maryland, Philadelphia, Wilmington, and many other Mid-Atlantic and Northeast areas.” Offerings include the indoor water park that has a variety of indoor pools and slides and is open throughout the year. The adventure park touts engaging attractions for the whole family, and daily events and activities are included in the cost of your stay.

Little Sesame Will Not Open Bethesda Location After Deciding to Focus on Hummus Distribution

Around this time last year we let you know that Little Sesame, a restaurant that offers freshly spun hummus and seasonal pita sandwiches, would be opening its first location outside of D.C. at 7118 Bethesda Lane in Bethesda Row. On Monday, the company announced that after a successful run of hummus production and distribution, it would be consolidating restaurant operations to its Golden Triangle shop, located at 1828 L St NW, and closing its Chinatown location on Thursday August 25. When asked if the statement meant that the Bethesda location would not be coming after all, Little Sesame replied “Sadly yes. Sticking to just one location for the time being.” The full statement can be seen below:

Beyond MoCo: Tailwind Air Announces First-Ever Seaplane Service to Washington, D.C. Area

Service will reduce total travel times by up to 60 percent and bypass congested trains and commercial airports and airline services. Fares are from $395 one way. Flights will operate from September 13 for six days a week up to twice daily and are timed for quick day trips and overnight stays.

Per Tailwind Air: Experienced seaplane operator Tailwind Air announces an exciting new destination, creating the fastest way to Washington, D.C. Travelers may now enjoy a nonstop seaplane flight directly from Manhattan’s Skyport Marina at East 23rd Street (IATA code: NYS) to Washington, D.C.’s College Park Airport (IATA code: CGS). Flights to/from Manhattan are approximately 80-90 minutes. Tailwind will be the only scheduled air service inside the Beltway outside of DCA. Scheduled service begins September 13, 2022, and will be operated by our fleet of Cessna Grand Caravans featuring two experienced pilots, eight Economy Plus leather seats, aisle and window access, crisp air-conditioning, and an ability to land on water or at an airport.

Arrest Made in Murder of Montgomery County Rideshare Driver Who Was Killed in Temple Hills

Per Prince George’s County Police: Homicide Unit detectives arrested and charged 21-year-old Kiayon Strowbridge of Temple Hills in connection with the fatal shooting of 55- year-old Nesredin Esleiman of Silver Spring.

On August 10, 2022, at approximately 6:20 am, patrol officers were called to the 5400 block of Chesterfield Drive for a welfare check. Once on scene, officers located the victim inside of a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The preliminary investigation revealed Esleiman was operating as a rideshare driver at the time of the murder.

MoCo Resident Claims World Record $4.5 Million Prize at 2022 White Marlin Open

Updated to reflect earnings now exceeding $4.5 million and $1.2 million for MoCo residents

The White Marlin Open is a 48-year-old deep-sea fishing tournament held annually in Ocean City, Maryland. The tournament awards prize money for catches of white marlin, blue marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin and swordfish. This year, a Bethesda resident, Jeremy Duffie, caught a white marlin and claimed the billfish tournament’s top prize., which is a world record payout. Duffie, fishing off Ocean City boat Billfisher, reeled in a 77.5-pound white marlin and claimed $4.536 million prize (photos below by @ryanwlackey). Sandy Spring’s Bill Britt received a $1.208 Million payout for reeling in a 511 pound blue marlin.

When responding to public health threats such as COVID-19, Maryland school districts have flexibility in determining mask-wearing policies. In July, PGCPS transitioned from mandatory mask-wearing to a mask-optional policy for the first time since the onset of the pandemic.

Rideshare Driver From Montgomery County Killed in Fatal Shooting in Temple Hills

Per Prince George’s County Police: Detectives with our Homicide Unit are investigating a fatal shooting in Temple Hills. The victim is 55-year-old Nesredin Esleiman of Silver Spring. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.

Beyond MoCo: NoVa Cookout Expected to Open By the End of The Summer

Back in May 2021, we let you know that fast food chain Cook Out is coming one step closer to us, as a new location was expected to open at 8502 Centreville Road in Manassas Park. The location, which was formerly home to a Roy Rogers, is now almost fully-staffed and expected to open by the end of the summer, a representative told us.

In 2020, the MoCo Show made the 60 mile trek down to Fredericksburg, VA to visit the areas closest Cook Out location. We left Gaithersburg, located in the approximate center of MoCo, at 6:14pm and arrived an hour and twenty minutes later, at 7:34pm. The Manassas Park location is a little over 30 miles from the center MoCo, about half the distance of Fredericksburg. There is a location in Salisbury, but that is further than both of Virginia locations mentioned.

Tysons Corner Center Open Again; Investigation Revealed Light Fixture Caused Loud Noise After Report of Gunshots Inside The Mall

Fairfax County Police tweeted that Tysons Corner has reopened after an investigation revealed that a light fixture fell and caused a loud noise after reports of gunshots inside the mall. As of 4:17pm, Tysons Corner Center has reopened. “Officers have cleared the mall. The investigation revealed a light fixture fell causing a loud noise. No evidence of a shooting was discovered. Tysons Corner Center is open. Thank you for your patience.”

At 3:18pm Fairfax County Police tweeted the following, “Officers are at Tysons Corner Center, 1961 Chain Bridge Rd in McLean for report of gunshots inside the mall. Nothing found at this point. Please avoid the area while officers continue to clear the mall.”
