The Maryland Park Service has announced that it will temporarily close Greenbrier State Park, the home of “Maryland’s Secret Beach” from May 5-9 as contractors repave the entrance road as part of ongoing upgrades to the park’s front entrance and contact station. These upgrades will help reduce traffic backups on busy weekends and holidays.

Today, The Justice Department, together with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG), announced a $300 million settlement with Walgreens Boots Alliance, Walgreen Co., and various subsidiaries (collectively, Walgreens) to “resolve allegations that the national chain pharmacy illegally filled millions of invalid prescriptions for opioids and other controlled substances in violation of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) and then sought payment for many of those invalid prescriptions by Medicare and other federal health care programs in violation of the False Claims Act (FCA). The settlement amount is based on Walgreens’s ability to pay. Walgreens will owe the United States an additional $50 million if the company is sold, merged, or transferred prior to fiscal year 2032.”

On Friday, the Frederick County Grand Jury returned seven indictments. Among those charged is Montgomery County man Tevis Denver Findlater, 27, of Silver Spring, who faces two counts of first-degree assault, four counts of second-degree assault, malicious destruction of property (valued at less than $1,000), possession and possession with intent to distribute cocaine, and six counts of violating his release conditions.

White’s Ferry owners Chuck and Stacy Kuhn have offered to donate the ferry business and assets, valued at $4.5 million, to Loudoun County, VA after Montgomery County recently declined a similar offer, as part of their ongoing effort to reopen the historic Potomac River crossing. On April 11, officials from Maryland, Montgomery County, and the Town of Poolesville offered a $3 million financial incentive to the ferry and Virginia landing site owners to help resolve the long standing dispute and reopen the ferry, which has been closed since 2020. According to a report by the Washington Business Journal, Giordano’s, the Chicago-style pizza maker has signed on for its first DMV location at 600 14th St. NW. The establishment will occupy a roughly 7,000 SF space near Metro Center that’s been vacant since December 2023, when Todd English relocated his MXDC Cocina Mexicana to 1610 14th St. NW.

The roar of the crowd, the clash of titans, the Cold War-era villainy– these are the images that likely spring to mind when the name Nikolai Volkoff is mentioned. For wrestling fans of a certain era, Volkoff, often paired with the likes of the Iron Sheik, was a formidable and heat-generating force, a symbol of Soviet strength in the squared circle that went head to head with Hulk Hogan in 1985. But beyond the bombastic persona and the signature rendition of the Soviet national anthem, there was another side to Josip Nikolai Peruzović, a man who found a quiet and fulfilling life in Maryland, far removed from the wrestling ring (per Steve Stasiak of Book Pro Wrestlers).
