Magruder Freshman, Colin Abrams, Wins Second National Championship in Four Days

Magruder Hugh School’s Colin Abrams has picked up his second national title in four days, easily winning the Emerging Elite 800m race with a personal best of 1:52.6 at the Nike Outdoor Nationals. The Nike Outdoor Nationals are currently wrapping up at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field (June 16-June 19).

According to Magruder Track’s Instagram account, the time is “one of the fastest-ever run by a 14-year-old in the WORLD. It is also the 6th fastest time posted by a freshman, ever, the fastest time run by any American freshman in the 2022 season, a new school record and a new Maryland Freshman Class record.” Colin Abrams will now come home from Oregon a two-time National Champion after his previous first place finish in the Freshman 400m with a time of 49.46.

Magruder High School freshman Colin Abrams will come home from Oregon a National Champion after his first place finish in the Freshman 400m with a time of 49.46. The Nike Outdoor Nationals are currently taking place at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field (June 16-June 19).

According to MileSplitMD, Colin “has a personal best in the 800m of 1:54.71, which is a Maryland freshman class record, and US Frosh No. 1 this season. He sits MD No. 5 overall this season. Abrams is also MD Frosh No. 1 in the 400m this season with his 50.70 FAT personal best.

MCPS Releases “After-Action” Report on January Shooting at Magruder High School

As required by Maryland state law, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) submitted a required “After-Action” report of the Jan. 21 shooting incident to the Maryland Center for School Safety. The center has reviewed the report and is making it available to members of the media by request. We provide that report to you here so that our community has a full understanding of what happened and what is being done to implement lessons learned.

Feasty Crab Opens Today in Derwood

Feasty Crab opens today at 16811 Crabbs Branch Way (the former location of Red, Hot, & Blue) in Derwood. Red, Hot, & Blue closed permanently back in July of 2019 after serving the Derwood area for 30 years. After almost two years of inactivity, Feasty Crab signage was put up in April 2021. The menu features oysters, snow crabs, scallops, crawfish, mussels, and various Cajun sides and desserts. The restaurant is open Sunday-Thursday 11am-9pm and Friday & Saturday 11am-10pm and is currently hiring.

Update on Magruder High School Shooting, Suspect to be Tried as an Adult

Today in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the honorable Judge David Boynton ruled defendant, Steven Alston, will be tried as an adult. The 17-year-old is facing attempted first-degree murder and other charges for the shooting inside Magruder High School on January 21^st, 2022 that wounded a fellow student, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office. He faces more than 100 years in prison if convicted. According to charging documents, “Alston advised he took the handgun to school because he was worried he was going to get jumped.”

Alston was apprehended in a classroom in school after the incident took place and while the school was in lockdown. A privately manufactured firearm (ghost gun) was found nearby inside the school, which is believed to be the gun used by Alston. Police Chief Marcus Jones noted at a press conference that there were several students in the bathroom at the time of the shooting, and nobody called 9-1-1.

‘Love is Blooming’ Animal Adoption Event During National Pet Week Continues Through Saturday, May 7, at County Animal Services and Adoption Center

Anyone who submits an adoption questionnaire by May 7 will receive a voucher valid through May 21 for a fee-waived adoption.

Standard adoption procedures are still in place. Interested adopters should visit the website to view available pets. An appointment can be made by filling out the application online, calling the shelter at 240-773-5900 during business hours or by walking in. Patrons with scheduled appointments will have priority over walk-ins. Submitting a questionnaire does not reserve an animal for adoption, which are first-come, first-served by appointment.

Road Closures This Morning for Pike’s Peek 10K

The Montgomery County Road Runners Club works in conjunction with the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, Montgomery County Police, City of Rockville Police, Montgomery County Department of Recreation and City of Rockville to ensure that the Pike’s Peek 10K course is safe for runners and has the least impact on traffic in the area.

Local Dollar Tree Stores to Add $3 and $5 Items

National chain Dollar Tree, which has MoCo locations in Damascus, Derwood, Gaithersburg, Germantown, Montgomery Village, Rockville, and Silver Spring, has begun adding “Dollar Tree Plus” sections to area stores. Items in the “Plus” section will be priced $3 and $5. New higher priced items include cookware, headphones, chargers, and t-shirts (Baby Yoda, Lilo & Stich, etc.) similar to those found at FiveBelow.

In January, Dollar Tree raised the price of all items in their stores from $1 to $1.25. The company said the price hike was not a result of inflation, but rather to “allow the company to offer a wider range of merchandise.” Regarding the new “Plus” pricing, Dollar Tree’s President and CEO Michael Witynski said, “For decades, our customers have enjoyed the ‘thrill-of-the-hunt’ for value at one dollar – and we remain committed to that core proposition – but many are telling us that they also want a broader product assortment when they come to shop. We believe testing additional price points above $1 for Dollar Tree product will enable us over time to expand our assortments, introduce new products and meet more of our customers’ everyday needs.”

Five acre Montgomery County campus launches program designed to treat military service members, veterans and their families behavioral health needs.

The Valley residential treatment center, a privately owned and operated treatment center that opened last year, is now admitting military service members, veterans and their families with Tricare Insurance at 19120 Muncaster Road, Rockville, MD 20855. The first of its kind Montgomery County facility offers an evidence-based inpatient treatment program that integrates addiction treatment, substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment, and behavioral healthcare in a comprehensive, person-centered, therapeutic method.
