The new Potomac Yard-VT Metrorail Station opens Friday at 5 a.m., connecting one of Alexandria’s fastest growing communities to the region. Less than 15 minutes to the nation’s capital, Potomac Yard-VT, on the Blue and Yellow lines, is the 98th station in the Metrorail system. 

Per the press release: Metro and the City of Alexandria first announced the opening date last month, following more than three years of construction. A team of Metro staff will be on hand throughout the day to welcome customers to Potomac Yard -VT Station for the first time and will be giving away commemorative opening day pennants while supplies last. The station’s fare vending machines will also be stocked with limited-edition Potomac Yard SmarTrip cards in honor or Metro’s newest station.


Hillary Howard, a longtime DC-area reporter and news anchor, has announced that she’ll be leaving WTOP on June 2nd after what she referred to as a decision by management. Howard currently co-anchors afternoons from 2:00pm to 7:00pm. She started her career as a reporter and weather person in New York before coming to DC and WTTG/FOX5 for a decade. Howard also worked for WUSA9 and WJLA/ABC7 before coming to WTOP. She also hosts “It’s Academic”, the world’s longest running TV quiz show on NBC Washington. Joe Gibbs, former Washington coach who won three Super Bowls with the team, released the following statement following the official announcement of a purchase/sale agreement between the Washington Commanders and a partnership led by Montgomery County native Josh Harris:

The Washington Commanders and a partnership led by MoCo native Josh Harris (Chevy Chase) have entered into a purchase and sale agreement, it was jointly announced on Friday, May 12th:

The Washington Commanders have announced that Chick Hernandez, who grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1981, will be joining former Washington players Brian Mitchell and Logan Paulsen as part of the new Preseason 2023 TV Crew.

Hernandez was born at Providence Hospital, but grew up in Silver Spring and graduated from Montgomery Blair High in 1981. While at Blair, Hernandez was a three-sport athlete, excelling in football. He even went on to play for one year at Montgomery College- Rockville. Following his time at MC, he enrolled at the University of Maryland. While Hernandez was still in school, fellow MoCo native Larry Michael (Northwood alumnus) offered him a job as a weekend producer with Mutual Radio in 1987. Hernandez went on to become the sports director at Georgia’s WRDW TV before coming back home to join FOX 5 as a sports anchor for seven years. He later worked for Comcast SportsNet/NBC Sports Washington for 17 years.


The D.C. Defenders will face the Arlington Renegades in the 2023 XFL Championship Game. The 2023 XFL Championship Game will be played at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT Saturday, May 13 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas and will air nationally on ABC.

D.C. Defenders quarterback Jordan Ta’amu has been named the 2023 XFL Offensive Player of the Year. Ta’amu helped lead the Defenders to a 9-1 regular season record and a berth in the XFL Championship Game. All of the 2023 XFL awards were voted on by each team’s respective head coach and/or Director of Player Personnel.


Over the bridge and through the tunnel, trains on the Yellow Line are ready to go. Service resumed on Sunday, May 7, Yellow Line across the Potomac River, following an eight-month, on-time and anticipated to be under budget rehabilitation project to repair the deteriorating 1970’s tunnel and bridge. The reopening, announced last month, will provide a faster, more direct connection for customers between Virginia and downtown DC, including travel to/from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Per WMATA: Yellow Line trains will initially operate every eight minutes weekdays from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. for the first month between Huntington and Mount Vernon Square, and every 12 minutes all other times and on weekends, a 60 percent increase in train service than before the closure last fall. In June service will improve to eight minutes all day, seven days a week.

Giant Food has posted a notice at many of its stores with a message from its president, Ira Kress, informing customers of changes made to the checkout experience. Changes include limiting self-checkout to 20 items or less. The full message can be seen below:

The New Orleans Saints drafted Damascus alumnus Bryan Bresee with the 29th pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Bresee graduated from Damascus High School in 2019 and went on to Clemson University where he was a second-team All-ACC selection.

Per the New Orleans Saints, “Bresee, a 6-foot-5, 305-pounder from Damascus, Md., was a former No. 1 recruit in the country who burst onto the scene as a Freshman All-American in 2020. Bresee became the second ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year in Clemson history. He has tallied 64 tackles (15.0 for loss), 9.0 sacks, and four pass breakups in 915 snaps from scrimmage over 26 games in his college career.”
