Phylicia Rashad to Step Down as Dean of Howard’s College of Fine Arts

Phylicia Rashad will be stepping down as dean of Howard University’s Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts at the end of this upcoming school year (2023/24). A reason for her impending departure was not provided, but Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick announced her decision and praised her work at the school since arriving in 2021. Rashad is perhaps best known for her role as Clair Huxtable on the sitcom The Cosby Show (1984–1992) and is an accomplished actress having appeared on various television shows, Broadway productions, and movies through the years. Cousins Maine Lobster Expands Into Maryland With August 18th Grand Opening

Cousins Maine Lobster, a leading quick-service Maine lobster roll concept, has announced the launch of their newest franchise market in Maryland. They are celebrating with the grand opening of the new food truck on August 18 at Streetcar 82 Brewing Company in Hyattsville, Maryland. The grand opening will take place between 12pm and 8pm at Streetcar 82 Brewing Company on 4824 Rhode Island Ave.

The operation is led by franchisees and brothers Yunus and Thameem Shahul and is part of a multi-unit franchise food truck deal for Washington, DC; Maryland; and Virginia. Yunus Shahul joined the Cousins Maine Lobster Franchise Family in September 2018 with his first food truck in Connecticut. Over the past five years the brothers have worked together to expand their franchise footprint to five markets that span from Connecticut to Virginia. The Shahul brothers launched their first DMV-area food truck in Virginia in March 2023 and have seen great success. “We are committed to investing in the DMV with the goal of building the same strong customer base that we have in our established markets,” Yunus explained. “Our brand has experienced great growth and a strong customer following on the East Coast and we know we can continue to connect with consumers in the DMV.”

Titanic: The Exhibition Arrives in the DMV This October

Starting October 7th, Titanic: The Exhibition will be in the DMV as it comes to 151 St George Blvd, Oxon Hill, MD 20745 at National Harbor. The visit, which takes approximately 80-90 minutes, will include an audio guide who will take you on a narrative experience describing the events on that fateful day in 1912. Visitors will be able to unravel the true story of the ship through personal belongings, photographs and other relics and walk through a recreation of the ship’s interior—from a first-class suite to a humble third-class cabin.

“The Exhibition is far more than a display of historic items: it is a unique narrative experience, a tale of the people aboard history’s most legendary ship on its maiden and final journey. Travel back to 1912 through photographs, handwritten letters, wayward keepsakes, and other personal belongings telling countless stories about the fates and heroic deeds on board.”

MS-13 Member from Montgomery County Pleads Guilty to Racketeering Conspiracy Including Murder

Per the Office of the United States Attorney, District of Maryland: MS-13 member Kevin Alexander Castillo Calderon, a/k/a “Fantasma,” “Ghost,” “Eterno,” and “Josue Argueta Gonzalez,” age 25, of Colesville, Maryland, pleaded guilty today to a racketeering conspiracy, including a murder.

According to court documents, the La Mara Salvatrucha gang, also known as “MS-13,” is an international criminal organization composed primarily of immigrants or descendants of immigrants from El Salvador, with members operating in the State of Maryland, including Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, and Frederick County, as well as throughout the United States. In Maryland and elsewhere, MS-13 members are organized into “cliques,” smaller groups that operate in a specific city or region. MS-13 members are required to commit acts of violence, both to maintain membership and discipline within the gang and against rival gangs. One of the principal rules of MS-13 is that its members must attack and kill rivals, known as “chavalas,” whenever possible. Participation in criminal activity by a member, particularly in violent acts directed at rival gangs or as directed by gang leadership, increases the respect accorded to that member, resulting in that member maintaining or increasing his position in the gang and opens the door to promotion to a leadership position.

MoCo Native Josh Hart is Finalizing a $81 Million Extension With the Knicks

Montgomery County native Josh Hart is finalizing a four-year, $81 million contract extension with the New York Knicks, ESPN reported on Wednesday. The 6’4 guard is considered one of the best rebounders at his position, averaging 7.8 boards per game last season. In 2021, Hart signed a $38 million deal with the Pelicans before being traded to Portland and then to the Knicks where he helped guide the team to the NBA Playoffs last season.

Josh Hart grew up in Silver Spring. Prior to transferring to Sidwell Friends in D.C., he attended and played basketball at Wheaton High School. He grew up playing basketball for the Montgomery County Bearcats, where his coaches praised him for his heart at an early age. He made the varsity basketball team as a freshman at Wheaton, eventually becoming a starter in the second half of the season. Even though he transferred to Sidwell Friends and played there the last three years of his high school basketball career, his ties to MoCo remained strong. His mother has been a long-time employee at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville and his father is a retired caterer.

Gov. Moore: “We want the Commanders in Prince George’s County and we’re gonna move aggressively to make that the case.”

Governor Wes Moore is in Ashburn, Virginia for Washington Commanders training camp (yesterday he visited Ravens camp) and answered questions from various reporters. Ben Standig of The Athletic asked Moore about the timeline for A new stadium and Moore made it clear that he wants the Washington Commanders to remain in Maryland.

“We see the timeline as we’re moving now.” Moore said. “We’ve already allocated $400 million that’s going toward the blue line corridor, which is the area right around the stadium in Prince George’s County. We are not waiting, we are not delaying, we are not stalling. We are letting people know right now that we want the Commanders in Prince George’s County and we’re gonna move aggressively to make that the case.

‘Museum of Failure’ Comes to DC in September

Beyoncé Covers Additional $100K To Keep Metro Open For An Additional Hour

Due to inclement weather that delayed the start of Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour at FedExField, Metro extended the last train by an extra hour beyond the extended closing previously announced. The extended time meant the #BeyHive can stay for the “Party” and still get home on Metro.

The additional hour was funded by Beyoncé and the Tour to cover the $100,000 cost to run more trains, keep all 98 stations open for customers to exit, and other operational expenses. During the extended service period, customers were only be able to enter at Morgan Boulevard, the station closest to FedExField. All other stations were exit only.

Additional Mosquitos Infected With West Nile Virus Found in Maryland

The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA), in cooperation with the Prince George’s County and Anne Arundel county Health Department, will expand mosquito control services in areas due to a public health concern over the potential for mosquito-borne diseases after additional mosquito pools tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

So far, no human cases have been reported. “For most people that get West Nile, they have zero symptoms. No symptoms at all,” said Johns Hopkins University senior scholar and physician Dr. Amesh Adalja (per FOX 5). Per the CDC, about 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever with other symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. About 1 in 150 people who are infected develop a severe illness affecting the central nervous system such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord).

Tornado Watch Issued Until 9pm

A Tornado Watch has been issued for Montgomery County for Monday, August 7th, from 1:20 pm until 9:00 pm. Be alert for rapidly changing weather conditions and be prepared to take shelter if a warning is issued.

Earlier today, the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security stated, “The @NWSSPC has just upgraded our area to a level 4 out of 5 for severe weather threat. This is very rare. Please pay attention to weather watching & warnings today. Have a plan ready to quickly seek shelter in a sturdy building away from windows, if warnings are issued today. To prepare for today’s weather: Charge battery-powered devices; fuel your vehicle; secure any loose outdoor furniture; locate your flashlight; and make sure you have some basic supplies available in case you lose power for a day or two.”

Flood Watch in Effect; Severe Thunderstorms and Damaging Winds Possible Monday

A Flood Watch is in effect from 8PM this evening to 2AM Monday for half of MoCo and many parts of the DC region. Per the National Weather Service, “showers and thunderstorms are expected to move through the watch area with the potential to produce 1-2 inches of rainfall in a short time frame. Locally higher precipitation totals are possible.”

We are not in the clear after the flood warning expires at 2am Monday, as severe thunderstorms are likely Monday afternoon/evening with the threat of damaging winds, large hail, and a couple tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service. Earlier today, FOX 5’s Mike Thomas tweeted, “Monday’s bullseye is shifting and that’s not good. Remember that an outlook is simply looking at the atmosphere and saying “this is where something is *most likely* to happen”. It’s not a promise, but if realized, Monday does have dangerous potential.” We’ll keep an eye on how things progress for Monday.
