Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call for smoke inside of Maiwand Grill, a popular restaurant serving Afghan cuisine in Burtonsville for approximately 20 years, on Monday afternoon.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, there was no smoke or fire evident from outside of the restaurant upon arrival. The small fire, likely on the stove top, was quickly controlled and extinguished and there were no injuries. Units checked the exhaust systems and the restaurant is not likely to close for any period of time stemming from the small fire.


Lindsey and Ronnie Curley’s son, Finn, was diagnosed with SELENON/SEPN1 Related Myopathy at 14 months old, on November 18, 2020.  Due to how rare the genetic disorder is, the family has decided to launch a non-profit, Giving Strength Inc., to support research and treatment for SELENON related myopathy.

To kick-off the official launch of Giving Strength Inc, the newly elected Officers and Board Members will host the first ever Giving Strength Gala, with all proceeds from the event will go towards SELENON research and awareness.


The parade will begin at 10 a.m. .at Paint Branch High School, with the line of march ending at the Praisner Center.

At the festival, there will be food trucks and vendors representing a variety of hometown favorites, international cuisines, craft, and exhibitors. Games and fun activities for all ages will be part of the activities. Two stages will provide continuous live performances of music, dance, and martial arts.


At approximately 9:42am Saturday morning, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services responded to a call on Strauss Terrace in Burtonsville for a cat trapped inside of a wall.

Upon arrival, units were told that the cat fell from a third floor crawl space and was trapped within the first floor walls. After breaching the wall and using a toy to lure the scared cat out, the cat was rescued and reunited with its owner outside of the walls at the Burtonsville home.

Starting with his first pop-up location in the Castro Valley Mall in 1984, he grew Spirit Halloween to 60 seasonal stores nationwide before it was acquired in 1999. His approach to short-term leases, locations, and the stocking of widely varied merchandise was novel in the Halloween retail sector.


Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 13-year-old from Silver Spring.

Zanaiya Neil was last seen on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at approximately 12 p.m., in the 4200 block of Cloudberry Court in Burtonsville.


The annual Burtonsville Day Celebration is back again! The theme of this year is “Discovering East County.” The celebration will take place on Saturday, September 24th at Marilyn J. Praised Library and Community Center (14906 Old Columbia Pike). The parade will take place from 10am until 11am and the festival will begin at 11am until 3pm. A 54-year-old man died Thursday morning after a house fire on the 3700blk of Monmouth Pl in Burtonsville.  According to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Pete Piringer, the fire was located on the 2nd floor of the home and was quickly extinguished. Firefighters located and removed a man from the 3rd floor who was then transported to the hospital but did not survive. The cause of the fire was electrical in nature and began in an outlet behind a sofa. Damages to the home are estimated to be around $150K and police will be conducting a death investigation.

Piringer reports that the initial dispatch came in at 10:40am for a location on the14600blk of Monmouth Dr, off of Greencastle Rd, for an alarm sounding. When  firefighters arrived they found no smoke or fire evident at the dispatched location, however firefighters then located the fire at the townhouse on Monmouth Pl.


Biryani Joint is now open at 15504 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville. A few weeks back, Biryani Joint took over the location that was formerly home to Royal Indian Cuisine, which closed after an approximate 7-year run earlier this summer.

Malik Shannon was last seen on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at approximately 9:30 a.m., in the 3900 block of Black Burn Ln. in Burtonsville.

Shannon is approximately 5-feet tall and weighs 90 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt, black jogger sweatpants and black and red Nike sneakers.
