Spirit is now open in Gaithersburg (Rio) at the former Charming Charlies, located at 101 Boardwalk Place and in Rockville at the former Pier One, located at 12137 Rockville Pike (Pike Center). The location in Burtonsville at the Former Fashion Bug, located at 15791 Columbia Pike, is expected to open soon. During the Halloween season, Spirit operates over 1,400 store locations in North America. The Spirit Halloween website is open year-round, offering its in-store products online. The stores are usually open for 30 or 60 days prior to Halloween.
Joe Marver created the Spirit Halloween business model, a pop-up store catering to Halloween revelers. Starting with his first pop-up location in the Castro Valley Mall in 1984, he grew Spirit Halloween to 60 seasonal stores nationwide before it was acquired in 1999. His approach to short-term leases, locations, and the stocking of widely varied merchandise was novel in the Halloween retail sector.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 13-year-old from Silver Spring.
Zanaiya Neil was last seen on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at approximately 12 p.m., in the 4200 block of Cloudberry Court in Burtonsville.
The annual Burtonsville Day Celebration is back again! The theme of this year is “Discovering East County.” The celebration will take place on Saturday, September 24th at Marilyn J. Praised Library and Community Center (14906 Old Columbia Pike). The parade will take place from 10am until 11am and the festival will begin at 11am until 3pm. Old Columbia Pike will be closed from Old Briggs Chaney Road (Paint Branch High School) to Marilyn J. Praisner Library from 9:30 am until approximately 11:30 am. The road closures are shown in the map below.
A 54-year-old man died Thursday morning after a house fire on the 3700blk of Monmouth Pl in Burtonsville. According to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Pete Piringer, the fire was located on the 2nd floor of the home and was quickly extinguished. Firefighters located and removed a man from the 3rd floor who was then transported to the hospital but did not survive. The cause of the fire was electrical in nature and began in an outlet behind a sofa. Damages to the home are estimated to be around $150K and police will be conducting a death investigation.
Piringer reports that the initial dispatch came in at 10:40am for a location on the14600blk of Monmouth Dr, off of Greencastle Rd, for an alarm sounding. When firefighters arrived they found no smoke or fire evident at the dispatched location, however firefighters then located the fire at the townhouse on Monmouth Pl.

Biryani Joint is now open at 15504 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville. A few weeks back, Biryani Joint took over the location that was formerly home to Royal Indian Cuisine, which closed after an approximate 7-year run earlier this summer.
Biryani Joint offers “30 exotic flavors of Biryanis”– a spiced mix of meat and rice, traditionally cooked over an open fire in a leather pot, that’s combined in different ways with a variety of components to create a number of unique flavor combinations. On Tuesday, January 18, 2022, Montgomery County Police 3rd District officers responded to the Sandy Spring Bank, located on the 3500 block of Spencerville Rd. in Burtonsville, for a bank robbery that just occurred. The preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 3:10 p.m., the male suspect entered the bank and approached a teller window. Once at the window, the suspect slid a note to the teller, announcing the robbery and demanding money. The teller complied and gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of money.
The suspect left the bank in an unknown direction.
Centrado Cafe Shop is now open at 15530 Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville (formerly Chapala), in the front portion of the building that also houses Luchador Bar & Eats, it’s sister restaurant. The coffee shop will focus on Central American coffee, pastries and food.
Centrado is owned and operated by Centrado restaurant group, who also own Restaurant 198, in the former Siebel’s location in Burtonsville. Seibel’s, which had been serving the community for over 82 years, permanently closed on November 28th, 2021.
