Burtonsville Crossing Redevelopment to Include Sprouts as Grocery Store Anchor

Burtonsville Crossing has been considered a mainly abandoned shopping center for years with just Pepino’s and Burger King currently leasing space. That’s going to change as EDENS and Montgomery County officials today announced the official redevelopment of the property that will include a major facelift and new grocery store anchor, Sprouts.

This will be the county’s first Sprouts location– a grocery store chain headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. The grocer offers a wide selection of natural and organic foods, including fresh produce, bulk foods, vitamins and supplements, packaged groceries, meat and seafood, deli, baked goods, dairy products, frozen foods, natural body care and household items. Fortune included Sprouts on its list of the World’s Most Admired Companies in 2018 and 2019.

Montgomery County Executive Elrich Unveils New ‘Welcome to Burtonsville’ Sign

The sign unveiled today is located on the north side of Route 198 and in the 15000 block of Old Columbia Pike, adjacent to the Burtonsville Town Square Shopping Center. The other sign is located on the south side of Route 198 and in the 3100 block of Spencerville Road, directly across from the Idara Jaferia Islamic Center.

“These new signs not only enhance the sense of community in Burtonsville, but also serve to brand the area and help establish Burtonsville as a desirable destination in the County,” said County Executive Elrich. “Additionally, they are a reminder of the truly transformative improvements made to the façades and sites of several properties located along Route 198 thanks to the County’s Façade Improvement Program. On July 1, we are launching our new Countywide Façade Improvement Program. The program makes available $3.5 million in funding through Fiscal Year 2028 to support commercial property and business owners in transforming their buildings—like those here in Burtonsville—with new, visually appealing exteriors.

Montgomery County Police Investigate Burglary at Burger King; Surveillance Video of Suspect Released

The investigation by detectives has determined that at approximately 2 a.m., the suspect forcibly entered the restaurant by shattering the window near the main entrance. The suspect crawled through the window, jumped over the front counter and attempted to open the cash registers, which were locked. The suspect exited the restaurant without stealing any property or money and fled the scene. Detectives reviewed the surveillance cameras in the restaurant and obtained a physical description of the suspect.

The suspect is described as an adult male, unknown race, approximately 6-feet tall, between 20-30 years old, medium build, carrying a blue backpack, wearing a black cap with white lettering, a black jacket, black plants, black gloves and black shoes.

Monroe is approximately 5-feet,6-inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. She has curly hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing light blue denim jeans, a green long-sleeve flannel shirt and black crocs. She may be carrying a tan bag with a black label of “MK” on it. Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for ‘Execution-Style Double Murder’ That Occurred in Montgomery County in 2018

On December 20, 2021, after a nine-day trial and nine hours of deliberations in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD before Judge David Lease, a jury found defendant Gregory Jones, 28, of Martinsburg, WV, guilty of first-degree murder for the deaths of Ashley Dickinson and Joshua Frazier in Burtonsville, MD. According to the State’s Attorney office, Judge David Lease sentenced Jones to two life terms in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 30 years for what police described as an execution-style double murder.

On February 15, 2018, the bodies of Joshua Frazier and Ashley Dickinson, both Virginia residents, were discovered in Ms. Dickinson’s running 2013 Audi SUV at a home on Aldora Circle in the Briggs Chaney area of Burtonsville, Montgomery County, Maryland. Both had been shot once in the back of the head from the back seat of the vehicle. Police located two 9mm shell casings in the car, as well as a projectile on a sidewalk near the vehicle.

MCFRS Respond to House Fires on May 23 and 24

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services are on the scene of a fire in a detached garage in the 13300blk of Old Columbia Pk. in the Burtonsville area, according to MCFRS Battalion Chief Steve Mann. The fire has been knocked down and investigators are in route. There were no injuries reported. Old Columbia Pk. is closed in the area of Cherry Hill and Fairland. Drivers are being advised to seek alternate routes and to expect significant delays. MCFRS responded to the call around 3:30pm on Tuesday afternoon.

MCFRS responded to a porch fire on Monday evening around 7pm the 7300blk Warfield Rd. near Woodfield Rd in Laytonsville a. The fire, which was described as a “cooking mishap,” was quickly extinguished with minimal extension. There were no injuries reported and damage is estimated to be around $40,000 ($30k Structure/$10k Contents) according to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS’ Pete Piringer. Photos of both incidents below:

Adult and Child Rescued After Canoe Tips Over at Rocky Gorge Reservoir

A father and his juvenile daughter were rescued after their canoe tipped over at the Brown’s Bridge recreation area at Rocky Gorge Reservoir, in the area of Browns Bridge Road and Ednor Road. According to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Pete Piringer, wind and stormy weather caused the canoe to tip over, knocking the father into the water. The father was able to make it to the shore while the daughter stayed with the boat and ended up down stream, clinging to trees when rescued. Boats from Howard County and Montgomery County were deployed during the rescue. There were no injuries reported.

Detectives Continue to Investigate Ongoing String of Burglaries

The investigation by detectives has determined that between the hours of 6 a.m. to approximately 4:30 p.m., beginning in December of 2021, through April 28, 2022, an unknown male suspect has been using an unknown tool to gain entry into numerous sheds and detached garages throughout the area of Burtonsville, Laurel and Spencerville. Once inside, the suspect steals property, prior to fleeing the scene.

Investigators believe that the burglaries are committed by the same suspect.

McKnew Park in Burtonsville Will Have a New Playground Soon

The current project at McKnew Local Park in Burtonsville will renovate the existing playground and picnic area for multi-purpose recreation and leisure uses while providing accessibility and stormwater management.

The existing playground was installed in 1998. It will be removed and a new playground will be installed in its place. Local park playgrounds are typically 3,500 to 5,000 square feet in size and include playground equipment to meet the needs of children from ages 2-12, and seating for caregivers. Typical types of equipment include swings, play structures and smaller freestanding pieces.

Paint Branch High School Sophomore is Hosting Personal Hygiene Donation Drive on Saturday, April 30

Paint Branch High School sophomore, Djenabou Bokoum, hosting a personal hygiene product donation drive next Saturday, April 30th at Paint Branch High School (14131 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville, MD).

Goods such as *full-sized soaps, shampoos, conditioners, body washes, deodorant, lotion, face wipes, toothpaste, floss, menstrual hygiene products, etc. will be collected during the drive and all donations will go out to the National Center for Children & Families in Bethesda to aid vulnerable women and mothers in their various support programs.

Hickory Bar & Grill Has Closed

Hickory Bar & Grill, located at 15420 Columbia Pike B in Burtonsville, has closed.

It has been closed for a while, with Google stating that the closure is temporary, but Site Realty has now placed signs in the window stating that the space is available to lease (you can call 301-622-9300 if you’re interested in leasing the space).
