Giant in Orchard Center Opens Friday Morning; Calverton Shopping Center Location Closes Permanently Thursday Night

Back in October we let you know that Giant Food signed on to open at the Orchard Center on Cherry Hill Rd in Calverton. The Landover-based grocery announced it signed a 20-year lease with MCB Real Estate for a 64,626-square-foot building to open a new grocery store location at the former ShopRite space at 12028 Cherry Hill Rd. ShopRite closed back in February of 2021 after Aldi opened in the shopping center in October of 2020. The grocery store has announced that it will open on Friday, August 5th at 6am. Nearby location at 11701 Beltsville Drive in the Calverton Shopping Center (located in Prince George’s County) will be closing permanently at midnight on Thursday, August 4th.

Back in October we let you know that Giant Food signed on to open at the Orchard Center on Cherry Hill Rd in Calverton. The Landover-based grocery announced it signed a 20-year lease with MCB Real Estate for a 64,626-square-foot building to open a new grocery store location at the former ShopRite space at 12028 Cherry Hill Rd. Giant operates 164 supermarkets in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia with about 20,000 associates. Included within the 164 stores are 152 full-service pharmacies, 82 full-service PNC Banks and 24 Starbucks locations. This will be the 21st Giant Food location in Montgomery County.

The grocery store is expected to open this summer, as construction has progressed and is now nearly complete.

Postal Service Worker Wins $25K in MoCo Playing Numbers from Package’s Barcode

A barcode-scanning issue turned a routine day of delivering packages into a $25,000 payday for a U.S. Postal Service employee. While every work day has challenges, he experienced a glitch when the barcode on one of his packages would not scan correctly. Instead of seeing it as a negative, he saw it as a sign to play a Lottery game.

After work, the 58-year-old visited his regular Lottery retailer, Wayside Farm Market located at 11790 Cherry Hill Road in Silver Spring. He bought a Pick 5 ticket for three evening drawings, June 4-6, placing a 50-cent straight bet on the number 14661. It wasn’t until five days later that he checked the winning numbers and learned that the failed barcode number earned him a $25,000 prize.

Tesla to Open New Service Center in White Oak Area

Tesla has plans for a new 26,000 SF service center on Broadbirch Dr. In the White Oak area, according to a report by BizJournals.

Per the report, “the new location would go in at 2320 Broadbirch Drive east of Columbia Pike, immediately south of the Home Depot and just north of the Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center, according to plans obtained from Construction Journal. The single-story office building was formerly occupied by State Farm Insurance.”

Giant Food has signed on to open at the Orchard Center on Cherry Hill Rd in Calverton, according to a report from the Washington Business Journal. Per the report, the Landover-based grocery chain has signed a lease for the roughly 64,626-square-foot ShopRite space at 12028 Cherry Hill Rd. ShopRite closed back in February of 2020 year and Aldi opened in the shopping center later that year in October.

Catalyst Hot Dogs is Now Open in Calverton (Silver Spring)

“Just a kid from Jersey with a dream.” The new food truck that serves New Jersey style hot dogs has opened for business today. The hot dogs will cost between $3-$5 and will include a variety of topping options. Per the Catalyst Hot Dogs website (menu available in link):

”Owner/operator, Chris Van Jura, has been a member of the Hospitality Industry for nearly 20 years. Over this time he has, on a daily basis, done what every Hospitalian does, which is put the attention and focus on the guest.
