Montgomery County  Police responded to a shooting Friday night in White Oak. According to MCPD, “At approximately 9:58  p.m., MCPD responded to the 11400 block of Stewart Lane for the report of a shooting.  An juvenile victim has been transported to an area hospital with non life threatening injuries at this time.  There are no suspects in custody. ”

 


Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. This national distinction celebrates White Oak Medical Center’s achievements in prioritizing patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors.

Per the press release: “I am incredibly proud of our team for their dedication to achieve this milestone and receive an ‘A’ from Leapfrog,” said Anthony Stahl, president of Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center. “While the last few years have been challenging, our team’s commitment remained: to improve patient safety and provide a world-class experience to every patient.” The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.


Non-profit organization Samaritan’s Feet, in partnership with Elevation Outreach, will be providing new socks and shoes to children in the White Oak Middle School community. Approximately 200 Sixth Grade Students and K-5th-grade students that attend OR will attend White Oak Middle School will have the opportunity to receive new sneakers and socks. 200 additional pairs of shoes for students that have not pre-registered will be available first come, first served!

This takes place today, Saturday, May 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at White Oak Middle School (12201 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20904). Volunteers will fit students for new shoes and socks. They will also provide a Hope Tote“, which is an orange drawstring book bag that also contains a Hope Note” with an encouraging message submitted by Samaritans Feet supporters. In addition, families can participate in fun activities at the event.


Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged 20-year-old Kaleab Abebe Berhanu, of Baltimore, for the homicide that occurred on Sunday, April 9, 2023, in the 11800 block of Old Columbia Pike.

Berhanu is accused of killing 20-year-old Carlos Rashard Carter, of Silver Spring. Through the investigation, detectives developed Berhanu as the suspect.


Montgomery County Police responded to a shooting in White Oak on Sunday, April 23. According to MCPD, “the call for a shooting was received at approximately 10:01 a.m. 3rd District officers responded to the 11300 block of Lockwood Dr. and located an adult male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. No suspect is in custody at this time. At this time, there is no reason to believe there is a threat to the public.

Public safety reporter Cordell Pugh tweeted that that officers applied a tourniquet to the victim prior to EMS’ arrival. We will post an update when addition information is available.


Montgomery County Police are investigating a homicide that occurred on Sunday, April 9, 2023, on Old Columbia Pike in Silver Spring.  Per MCPD“At approximately 3:22 a.m., Montgomery County Police responded to a residence in the 11800 block of Old Columbia Pike to assist Montgomery County Fire Rescue.  

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male with trauma to the body. Officers provided life saving measures to the victim who was then transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore will conduct an autopsy to officially determine the cause and manner of the death.

Friends of White Oak and Councilmember Kristin Mink are asking the White Oak community (and surrounding areas) what they would like to see in the location that was previously home to Sears in the White Oak Shopping Center. Sears closed its White Oak location in 2021.

“Friends of White Oak is working to increase commercial and residential development, existing infrastructure and opportunities can make the community a prime hub for business development and economic expansion. This survey aims to engage the community and gather input about what can be done with the Sears building in the White Oak Shopping Center. Please share among the community as feedback will help assist in the future of the remaining property.” The survey can be found here.


A pedestrian was struck and killed on Columbia Pike at Stewart Lane on Thursday, March 16. According to Montgomery County Police, “At approximately 1:28 p.m., an adult male was crossing the northbound lanes of Columbia Pike in a westbound direction when he was struck by a Ford Explorer traveling northbound. The driver remained at the location and the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.” MCPD will issue a news release as more information becomes available, including the name of the deceased. 

2PM update: Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services and Montgomery County Police responded to a collision involving a pedestrian around 1:20PM on Thursday, March 16. According to public safety reporter Cordell Pugh, the incident occurred at Northbound US-29 Columbia Pike, near Stewart Ln in White Oak. Montgomery County Police tweeted the following at 2:12PM: “All lanes at northbound 29 at New Hampshire Ave. are closed. All southbound lanes of 29 are open. Drivers can use Old Columbia Pike as an alternate route to continue northbound on 29. Expect significant delays.” We will post an update when additional information is available.
