MCPS recently shared the news of Maya Mourshed, a student at Francis Scott Key Middle School in Silver Spring, who not only shines in STEM subjects but also expresses her passion for science through her writing as a young author. Mourshed recently published her debut book, Chemistories, where she melds her fascination with science and storytelling.

MCPS announced on Friday, December 13th that La Faye Howard, assistant principal at Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, has been honored as the 2025 Assistant Principal of the Year by the Maryland Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Howard will now advance to compete for national recognition.

The Blake High School athletics department announced the passing of former P.E. Teacher, soccer coach and assistant principal Rudy Tyrell after a battle with Leukemia. Tyrell also served as assistant principal at Gaithersburg High School and most recently returned to MCPS as an acting administrator at Seneca Valley High School after initially retiring after 30 years of service with MCPS in 2020.

Dr. Joseph Bostic, currently a principal intern at Northwood High School and a former MCPS Teacher of the Year, has been appointed acting principal of Thomas S. Wootton High School effective December 10, 2024. This change follows the administrative leave of Principal Doug Nelson on December 9, after an incident where a racial slur was found written on a student’s desk.
