There are 182 public high schools in Maryland with an approximate average of 1,030 students per school. All of the 20 largest schools when it comes to enrollment have at least double the average. Northwest High School principal Scott Smith sent a letter to the community informing them that the school is in a “modified shelter” due to an anonymous threat made via social media. At this time, it is not believed that the threat is credible, but Montgomery County Police is on-sight as a precaution. Full letter can be seen below:

“Dear Northwest High School Students, Families and Staff,


1. Applications Open Soon for High School Regional/Countywide Special Programs: On Tuesday, Oct. 10, Grade 8 students will have the opportunity to apply for Regional/Countywide Special Programs using the high school common application found in ParentVUE. Additionally, students in Grades 9-11 may apply for career readiness programs. Information sessions will be available for students and families, and all dates can be found on the special programs webpage.

Applications are due by Friday, Nov. 3. Programs-At-A-Glance, eligibility, frequently asked questions and October open house dates are available on this website.

The Sherwood High School Varsity baseball program for has earned a Team Academic Excellence Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).

The team Academic Excellence Award honors high school and college programs coached by ABCA members that post a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Sherwood students were recognized for achieving a 3.48 team GPA.


Per MCPS: “The 2024 Regeneron Science Talent Search (Regeneron STS) application is now open! Every year, thousands of high school seniors eagerly await this chance to submit their original research to the nation’s oldest student STEM competition in the hopes of being named one of the scientific leaders of the future – and of winning the top prize of $250,000.

The online application consists of essays, questions about students and their research, recommendations from teachers and mentors, and more, including the submission of an original research paper. This year’s deadline is Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023 at 8 p.m. ET.
