MCPS COVID-19 Outbreak Measures & FAQ

Per Montgomery County Public Schools: “As new cases of COVID-19 increase locally, we have seen outbreaks occurring in multiple schools across the county. Temporary outbreak precautions for individual classrooms where COVID-19 is spreading rapidly helps prevent spread to vulnerable individuals and to the rest of school.” Check out the FAQ below, per MCPS:

What guidance does MCPS follow to determine health and safety procedures for COVID-19? MCPS follows CDC COVID-19 recommendations for K-12 schools, per joint guidance from the Maryland State Department of Education and Maryland Department of Health (MDH) and MDH’s school guide for Communicable Diseases. Community health strategies are planned in coordination with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services.

Student Who Was Bullied at Quince Orchard High School Runs Out With Football Team Holding Sign Sharing The Message ‘Forgive’

Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman tweeted a new video of the young man who was seen being attacked in a viral video from earlier this month– this video showed the Quince Orchard High School student running out with the football team ahead of its Thursday night game, holding a banner with the message ‘forgive’ written on it. The video and a photo tweeted by Quince Orchard High School principal Beth Thomas can be seen below.

The father of the student who was attacked in the original video spoke out in an interview with FOX5’s Shomari Stone. The victim’s father told FOX 5 that he believes his son was targeted. He says his son is on the autism spectrum. “I’m obviously distraught, especially after seeing the video, or videos that have been, I guess leaked or put on social media. It hurts to see your child hit numerous times by a bully.” he said.

Montgomery County Board of Education Releases Summary of Report on Investigation of MCPS Principal

On Thursday evening, the Montgomery County Board of Education provided an update to county leaders on the independent investigation of MCPS principal Joel Beidleman following alleged conduct reported by the Washington Post. MCPS ‘Things To Know’ This Week

MCPS: Student-Athlete Leadership Council Holds Kickoff Meeting

On Sept. 12, the kickoff meeting for this year’s Student-Athlete Leadership Council (SALC) was held at Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville. The council is made up of two students from each MCPS high school and seven at-large members, who meet bi-monthly to share ideas on the interscholastic athletics program. Launched in 2018, SALC cultivates academic, athletic and community excellence by engaging student-athletes to serve as district level leaders within the MCPS athletics program.

The SALC planning committee includes athletics specialists Dessalyn Dillard, Paint Branch High School; Gina Grubb, Poolesville High School; Jermaine Howell, Albert Einstein High School; Larry Hurd, Jr. Walter Johnson High School; Tom McTighe, Wheaton High School and Jody Tyler, Northwest High School, along with Robin McCue, administrative assistant for the athletics office.

MCPS: AP/IB Exams, Approved College Courses Will Be Free for Students

This year, MCPS is providing new opportunities for middle and high school students, including career advising and no fees for approved college courses and Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.

No Fees for Approved College Courses and Transportation: Students will be able to access college courses at no cost. Additionally, MCPS will provide transportation to Montgomery College (MC) campuses during the school day for college courses that are not available online or at a student’s high school. A transportation schedule has been developed with routes from each high school to the nearest MC campus. Students interested in taking an approved college course not currently offered at their high school or online during the school day and in need of transportation should work with their high school Dual Enrollment Program Assistant (DEPA) and their assigned high school counselor to identify courses of interest that would support their high school plan and fit within the transportation schedule.

MCPS Is Hosting Girl’s Summit This October

Montgomery County Public Schools is inviting all MCPS families to the Girls’ Summit on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Clarksburg High School. This event will provide informative workshops geared towards middle and high school girls on a variety of current topics. Join us for a chance to network, participate in fun activities, learn valuable skills and enjoy a fashion show presented by White House Black Market celebrating diverse body types!

Sessions will be provided in English and Spanish, and will be organized by grade level. Student Service Learning (SSL) hours will be available for students. Topics and activities will include:

MCPS Seeks Feedback on 2024-2025 Calendar

MCPS is seeking feedback on the design of the MCPS 2024-2025 Calendar. This feedback represents one component of the development process incorporating feedback from our students, staff, and families. MCPS will consider educational interests, operational needs, mandated school closures by state law, compliance with minimum instructional days and credit hour requirements, contingencies for inclement weather and other emergencies, staff professional days and early release days, alignment with assessment schedules, and etc.

MCPS provides a school year calendar that allows for effective use of time for teaching and learning, for professional growth opportunities, and planning instructional strategies focused on improving student achievement, while maintaining our lens of equity for all students and commitment to community engagement in the MCPS Antiracist Audit Action Plan.
