This comes on the heels of over 1,000 MCPS students walking out of school this past Wednesday to attend a gun control rally on Capitol Hill.
The event is limited to high school students in Montgomery County and will take place at the Blair High School auditorium.
Mildren Charley-Green, from Northwood High School in Silver Spring, was named MASSP (Maryland Association of Secondary Proncipals) High School Principal of the Year.
Myriam Yarbrough, principal at Paint Branch High School in Burtonsville, is the 2018 recipient of the Dr. Edward Shirley Award for Excellence in Educational Administration and Supervision.

Blair led 30-24 at the half in a back and forth game, but found themselves trailing by 3 with 12.5 seconds left In the game.
Trailing 53-56, the Blazers missed a three with 6 seconds left, got an offensive rebound, and drained one from long range with .8 seconds left. They went on to win in OT, 66-62.

To honor him, the Montgomery County Council gave him a proclamation to recognize his extraordinary achievement. Councilmembers Tom Hucker, Nancy Floreen, and Craig Rice are pictured with Andrew as he receives his award. Andrew decided to have some fun and formed a circle with his fingers as he holds the award. When I asked him if this was done on purpose he replied with “the finger placement was intentional 😊.” More on that in a bit.
Andrew’s winning project was about designing a protocol to secure long, complex auctions that take place online. This provides security from malicious third parties and also prevents bidders from cheating auctioneer and vice versa. This field of study is known as cryptographic auctions.

MCPS touts an increase in graduation rate for African American students (from 87.7% to 88.2%) and an increase of 0.9% for students receiving Free and Reduced Meals (FARMS).
Fourteen high schools saw their graduation rates increase. The largest increases were seen at the following schools:
Earlier today MCEA AND SEIU announced that teachers and members affected by health insurance overcharges due to errors with tobacco attestation will be refunded in their March 2nd paychecks. A total of $425K is expected to be refunded.
MCPS, the largest school district in the state, was ranked behind first place Howard County and ahead of third place Frederick County. Both Montgomery County and Howard County earned an ‘A’ in the category.

Montgomery County Council Member, Roger Berliner, tweeted the following about prepaying property tax in MoCo: “The County issued an update on the property tax prepayment option & the IRS advisory on this matter: bit.ly/2E7UrZK. After school last week I noticed my students using an app that I was not familiar with so I asked them what it was. They told me it was called MyMCPS+ (Download here: itunes.apple.com/us/app/mymcps/id1291038640?mt=8) and that they were using it to see what grade they would need on an upcoming test in order to move up a letter grade or maintain the one they had. Then they showed me how it worked and I was amazed at how simple and easy to use it was.
I reached out to the developer, Solomon Sapiro, and found out that he was a recent graduate of Wootton High School (class of 2017). I ended up meeting with Solomon in College Park, where he attends the University of Maryland, and he told me a little more about the app and himself.
