C-SPAN has announced the 2025 winners of its 21st annual StudentCam competition, recognizing students from Silver Spring, Bethesda, Potomac, Germantown, Rockville, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. Dermott Foley of Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring won the grand prize for his documentary on fentanyl overdose, while other students received second, third, and honorable mention prizes for topics such as affordable housing, climate change, and healthcare policies. Every two years, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Eastern Division Conference unites the European Music Educators Association with top student musicians from the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern regions—including the District of Columbia. This time around, twelve MCPS students were selected.

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) issued a news release stating that it welcomed Montgomery County Public Schools’ (MCPS) response to a complaint regarding the alleged mistreatment of an 8-year-old Muslim student at Cabin Branch Elementary School in Clarksburg, which included removing the teacher from the classroom. The CBS sitcom Ghosts debuted in October 2021 and was ranked as the 11th most-watched show of the 2023/2024 season, according to Variety. Notably, the series, which is now in its fourth season, features two actors who graduated from Wootton High School in Rockville: Utkarsh Ambudkar and Richie Moriarty.

MCPS has shared that three supporting services employees have been named finalists for the 2025 Supporting Services Employee of the Year. This year’s annual awards, given by SEIU Local 500 and MCPS, are recognizing Esquibel (Celi) Andino, bus operator, Randolph Transportation Depot; Josephine (Josie) Marinucci, school secretary I, Westover Elementary School and John Sparrow, paraeducator, Poolesville High School. The winner will be announced at a celebration in May.

Montgomery County Public Schools, in partnership with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, recognized regional winners of the Math, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) program, where students showcased innovative projects addressing societal concerns. First-place winners from several MCPS schools will advance to the MESA State Competition on May 3, 2025, at the Applied Physics Laboratory. (more…)


In an inspiring initiative aimed at supporting educators and fostering community spirit, local teachers Krystal Putman and Rachel Savadow have launched a “Buy Nothing Group” specifically for Montgomery County teachers and their supporters.
