Per MCPS: “This January has been a challenging month for our community, with freezing temperatures, snow and icy conditions affecting our daily routines. Students, staff and families have navigated these tough weeks with resilience, being cautious while traveling and layering up against the cold. We can now look forward to a welcome warm-up in the coming days; however, we must make a necessary adjustment to the school calendar due to the weather-related closures earlier this month.

MCPS recently shared that Emily Callaghan, a dedicated social worker at Montgomery Blair High School, has been recognized with the prestigious Martin Luther King (MLK) Peacemaker Award for her exceptional contributions to fostering a supportive environment for students. The award, presented by the Montgomery County Street Outreach Network (SON), honors individuals who significantly impact community improvement and peacemaking initiatives.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School (13737 Wisteria Dr. Germantown, MD) evacuated the building on Thursday morning due to a fire alarm. The school sent out a message assuring the community the students and staff are safe, but moved to Lake Seneca ES due to the low temperatures. Due to a failed water pipe, the school is without heat and water and the decision to close the school was made. Full communication from the school can be be seen below:

Update: MCPS has reversed course after initially stating that there would be a 2-hour delay on Thursday, January 23rd. Schools will now open on time.

MCPS has announced that the school systems will operate under a Code Yellow – Two Hour Delay on Wednesday, Jan. 22 and Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025


MCPS recently spotlighted Max Nguyen, a junior at Wootton High School in Rockville, who has garnered widespread attention for his remarkable rendition of “Stick Season,” a song by musician Noah Kahan. The performance was highlighted by Kahan himself as a story on his Instagram story, which boasts over 2 million followers.

On January 13, 2025, Superintendent Thomas W. Taylor released an expanded version of the FY 2026 Proposed Operating Budget spreadsheet. This expanded version of the budget represents a commitment to increased transparency in the budgeting process and is now available online for the Montgomery County community through this link.
