MoCo businesses receive approximately $2.5 billion in federal COVID-19 relief funds
17,323 MoCo businesses received loans from the Small Business Association’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). Congress passed the PPP in early April to boost small business damaged by the pandemic.
D.C., along with 17 other cities, has submitted the paperwork to bid to be a host city of the 2026 World Cup.
The World Cup will be shared by Mexico, Canada, and the U.S, as was announced in 2018. Mexico and Canada are expected to provide about 3 cities each to host various games, while the U.S. is expecting to have 10 different host cities for the 80-match long tournament. D.C.’s bid names FedEx Field.
This past Thursday, June 25, Strathmore announced their 2020-2021 event lineup.
The first event will be an outdoor exhibit in October, titled “Monuments: Creative Forces” by artist Craig Walsh. Portraits will be projected onto trees throughout the campus. According to the Strathmore website, the installation “challenges traditional expectations of public monuments” and “pays homage to regional artists who are forces of nature.” The exhibit will run from October 2-25.
Glenstone Museum in Potomac has reopened as an outdoor-only experience on Thursday-Sunday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Visitors will be allowed in groups no larger than 5 at a time, and each group is scheduled to arrive at least 15 minutes apart. Masks are required, and different groups must remain 6 feet apart.
As Montgomery County transitioned to Phase 2 last Friday, June 19, one of the few businesses that remain closed are movie theaters. One theater, however, has options available. AFI Silver, whose theater is located in downtown Silver Spring, has a “Virtual Screening Room” that has been available since late March.
Patrons can choose from a selection of rotating movies to stream from home. Films are available to be rented for 3-5 days, and tickets range from $10-12, depending on the distributor. A portion of the proceeds goes towards the maintenance of the theatre.
You might know actress Uzo Aduba from her role as Suzanne Warren (also known as “Crazy Eyes”) in the Netflix show Orange is the New Black… but did you know that Uzo has MoCo ties?
In 2003, Aduba performed in the show Translations of Xhosa at the Olney Theatre. She was a student at Boston University at the time and was in the MoCo area for that summer during the span of the production. She earned a Helen Hayes nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the role that she played.
Even though Glenstone is currently closed, the Potomac art museum has created ways to allow the community to visit from home. They are hosting facebook live discussions with their Guides, are sharing photos of current works, and are transforming some of their exhibits so that viewers at home can share in the experience. One of their interactive exhibits is an installation by artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres, which consists of a pile of fortune cookies assembled in the corner of the museum. Glenstone explains what the traditional in-person experience would look like and how they have changed the process so folks at home can participate.
“In ordinary days, visitors would be able to take a cookie for themselves, read their fortune, and contemplate Gonzalez-Torres’ work and the questions it raises: how has this moment shifted our perceptions of public space? What does this work mean if you cannot be physically near it to take a cookie? How can we make and experience art across physical and digital boundaries?
Back in May we let you know about The Eleanor, a neighborhood ‘bowling lounge’; a comfortable, casual dining and drinking establishment with the addition of skee ball, mini bowling and other games, that is coming to Downtown Silver Spring.
At that time Biz Journals reported that Downtown Silver Spring will undergo a $10 million overhaul that will include the 7,700 square foot bowling lounge.
