Loyalty & patriotism will be on full display as the City joins the nation in honoring all who have given their lives in military service at its Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 30, 2022, at 11 a.m. at Christman Park. The public is invited to join the Mayor & City Council, Junior Mayor, City staff & honored guests in a tribute to those of all generations who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Joining the May 30 observance will be guest speaker Dr. Richard W. Thomas, MD, DDS, FACS (Major General – Retired). Dr. Thomas retired as a Major General from the United States Army with more than 26 years of service. During his career he commanded at multiple levels within the Army, including serving as the Director of Healthcare Operations & the Chief Medical Officer for the Defense Health Agency; Commanding General of the Western Regional Medical Command; Surgeon General, USFORCES-Afghanistan; Chief, U.S. Army Medical Corps; and numerous other staff & leadership positions. Dr. Thomas has also served multiple combat tours supporting operations in Iraq, Afghanistan & Panama.
The 2022 Takoma Trukgarten Festival will take place on Saturday, June 4th, from 12noon-5:00pm, according to Main Street Takoma. This one-day beer festival features local breweries pouring craft beers and cider: Silver Branch Brewing Co., Smoketown Brewing, Manor Hill Brewing, Streetcar 82, Peabody Heights Brewing Co, Union Brewing, Anxo Cider (check back for more).

The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when the Union army arrived in Texas bearing federal orders proclaiming the end of slavery. In July 2020, the Mayor and Council approved a resolution making Rockville the first municipality in Maryland to recognize Juneteenth as a paid city holiday.
In 2021, the Montgomery County Council issued the following statement regarding Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday:
Montgomery Parks will celebrate the reopening of Edith Throckmorton Neighborhood Park(opens in a new tab) on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at 11 a.m. The rain date is May 14, 2022, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The celebration of the park renovation is free and open to the public and will include a brief speaking program, ribbon-cutting ceremony, and light refreshments. The park is located at 3925 Hampden Street, Kensington, MD 20895.
“The renovation of this park is remarkable. By modifying the space and adding new amenities, this park has been transformed from what was mostly just a playground to a place for people to gather with friends and neighbors, for kids to play, and for all to appreciate the natural setting of the Rock Creek stream valley,” said Mike Riley, director of Montgomery Parks. Rocktobierfest is currently scheduled to take place at RedGate Park at 14500 Avery Road in Rockville on Saturday, October 1st from 11am-5pm.. It makes for the second major City of Rockville event to leave Rockville Town Square this year, as Taste of Rockville/Hometown Holidays will also be taking place at RedGate Park for the first time this year.
Rocktobierfest features three stages of entertainment, including German, rock and children’s music. Guests can also enjoy beverages for sale by local breweries and participants, food, and an artisan shopping area. This annual event attracts usually attracts more than 8,000 people. Last year’s Rocktobierfest was scheduled to take place in Rockville Town Square on October 2nd, but was cancelled on September 17th due to Covid concerns.
The Soulfull Café, in partnership with Main Street Connect, is reopening and hosting a Grand Reopening Event and Spring Fest on Saturday, May 14th from 11am until 1pm at 50 Monroe Place, Rockville, MD 20850. The City of Gaithersburg is hosting “Train Day” as the Community Museum celebrates the City’s long & storied history with the railroad that allows visitors to immerse themselves in everything trains. View large-scale steam locomotive model train displays exhibited by Local Locos Live Steamers, learn about the MARC & Brunswick line with the Maryland Transit Authority, and make a train craft. Explore a caboose, the RDC rail car, and the 1918 steam locomotive in the adjacent History Park. Discover hands-on learning centers& shop for train-related items in the Museum. With any luck visitors can also enjoy the sights & sounds of the actual CSX & Amtrak trains that frequently rumble by.
This event will take place on Saturday, May 7, 2022 from 11am until 3:30pm. This is a drop-in program for audiences of all ages. Admission is free, but a donation to help cover the cost of materials is appreciated. Please note children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair has announced its 2022 dates for this upcoming summer. This will be the fair’s second year back after having to cancel for the first time in its 70+ year history in 2020 due to Covid restrictions. This year opening day for the MoCo Fair will be on Friday, August 12th and it will go until Saturday, August 20th (hours for each day can be seen below).
Currently, the fair is looking for anyone who is willing to donate their car to be entered in our Annual Demolition Derby. It must run and it will be tax deductible for the 2022 Tax Season. In return you will get the Tax Deduction Letter and a Family Fun Package to the Fair that includes, 4 Tickets to the Fair, 1 parking ticket, 4 Tickets for the Demolition Derby & 4 Carnival All-You-Can-Ride One-Day Wristbands. The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington is hosting the Y’s annual Healthy Kids Day® on April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., encouraging families to take a moment to help kids be kids and set them up for a summer of success. Occurring at nine different locations across the Metropolitan region, including the Bethesda and Silver Spring locations, the day-long event will feature activities such as cooking demonstrations, a puppy parade at YMCA Anthony Bowen, kids’ yoga, STEM activities, farm stands, and water safety to motivate and teach families how to develop and maintain healthy routines at home.
“At the Y, we believe in the potential of all children and each day we work to help kids find that potential within themselves,” said Kristy McCarron, vice president of Community Health and Wellness. “Healthy Kids Day is a fun, free community-wide event to kick off summer and remind us all how important it is for kids to stay active physically and mentally throughout the summer.”
