Verny Varela is an arranger, composer, singer and flutist who born in Cali, Colombia, and raised in the “Barrio Obrero,” Verny started singing and playing with his father’s band, El Nuevo Son. In 1996, he sang with Ismael Miranda, Adalberto Santiago, Pete “El Conde” Rodríguez and the Fania All Stars, in Cali and in Tulua. In 1997, Verny became the lead singer in the Gabino Pampini Band, and later toured Europe and the U.S. with Tito Gomez.”

The special display of Lotus is expected to have at least 20 vehicles with the ACBC founder’s initials. Models expected will include a Seven and a Type Nine. There also will be displays of Elite, Elan, Europa, Eclat, Esprit, Elise, Exige and Evora. The cars will represent Lotus models from the 1950s to the 2020s. The special display will be located at the front of the show field, near the stage. In addition to the vehicles on display, with owners nearby to provide details and histories, the show will have a flea market and a car sales area. Food and drink will be available for purchase. Visitors can bring their own food to the show area. Music will be provided by Blue Sky Five.


Yelp’s “Yelp MD Burbs” released its list of “Top 25 Places to Eat in MD Burbs”  and 18 of the 25 restaurants on the list are in Montgomery County, including four of the top five. Yelp is a popular company that publishes crowd-sourced reviews about businesses with a major focus on restaurants. Per Montgomery County: The County is discussing building a new recreation center in Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village. Tomorrow night, Oct. 3, from 7-9 p.m. at Montgomery Village Middle School, Councilmembers Dawn Luedtke and Laurie-Anne Sayles will be joined by community leaders, residents, and organizations to discuss the vision for a recreation center. There will be food and beverages provided. Students who attend will be eligible for SSL hours.

“The County is committed to providing an enriching amenity for the Gaithersburg and Montgomery Village communities, where there is a high need for investment in our residents, with a particular focus on our youth,” said Councilmember Sayles. “During the ‘Stop the Violence’ town hall held in July at Germantown Library, a consistent need that came up was for there to be more space where residents could live, learn, work, and play. Communities with convenient access to recreation space and opportunities have proven economic success and well-being.”


The Gaithersburg Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department (GWGVFD) will be hosting its family-friendly open house on Sunday, October 8th at 801 Russell Avenue in Gaithersburg from 12pm until 4pm. The event will offer experiences for the entire family, including food, beverages, and music provided by the department. There will be be fire safety demonstrations, a moon bounce, the opportunity to climb onto a firetruck, and meet and greets with firefighters, EMTs, and Sparky the mascot.

Since 1927 the Gaithersburg Washington Grove Volunteer Fire Department has served the communities of Gaithersburg, Washington Grove, Derwood and Montgomery Village.  The GWGVFD operates two stations with both volunteer and career personnel. Their volunteers are involved operationally as Firefighters, Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians. They also have administrative volunteers with many of their members having served for more than 20 years.


Hangry Joe’s is now open in the Montgomery Village Shopping Center.  The Nashville-style hot chicken restaurant is located adjacent to the Starbuck’s at 19290 Montgomery Village Ave.  Hangry Joe’s in know for its hot chicken sandwiches, known as the “Chicken Sando”, and allows guests to choose the spice level of the fried chicken (Plain<Mild<Medium<Hot<Angry Hot). The menu also consists of chicken fingers, chicken & waffles, wraps, nuggets, loaded fries, and salads. Sides include cider slaw, waffle fries, and fried okra.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to the 9600blk of Brassie Way in Montgomery Village on Thursday, September 20, around 5:30pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from a third floor bedroom window. The fire was extinguished and there were no injuries reported. Four adults have been displaced.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a fire on Wednesday afternoon in the 19000 blk of Montgomery Village Ave, near Centerway Rd. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, there was a small insulation fire on the roof of the upcoming Baskin Robbins in the Montgomery Village Shopping Center. The fire is out and there were no injuries reported.

UPDATE: All travel lanes have reopened on northbound I-270 at Exit 13 for Middlebrook Rd. Expect residual delays.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision involving a car and a tractor trailer on Tuesday, September 19 around 5pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the incident occurred on northbound I-270 between Montgomery Village Ave and Watkins Mill Rd, prior to Middlebrook Rd. Two patients were evaluated with non-life threatening injuries. Only one lane of traffic gets by as of 5:47pm.


Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a fire in the 9600blk of Shadow Oak Dr, near Arrowhead Rd., in Montgomery Village on Tuesday, September 19. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the fire originated in a small pile of trash in a 2nd floor bathroom of the two-story townhouse. Firefighters assisted several residents from the building and there were no injuries reported.
