Run For Gaithersburg City Council! Candidate Packets Available Starting May 11

Candidate Packets will be released on May 11. The packets will be available online or can be picked up at City Hall. Per the City of Gaithersburg: City residents will cast their ballots for three City Council Members in November of 2023. All Council Members serve at-large. The terms of office for Council Members Neil Harris, Ryan Spiegel, and Robert Wu expire in November. The Council Members elected in 2023 will each serve a four-year term.

Candidate Packets for this election cycle will be released on May 11. The packets will be available online here or can be picked up at City Hall, 31 South Summit Avenue. Candidates must file a petition for candidacy with the Gaithersburg Board of Supervisors of Electionsvia the Office of the City Attorney. The petition must be signed by at least 100 City residents who are registered voters, with both electronic and paper versions of the petition signatures available.

Mysterious Object Flying Over MoCo Thursday Night Revealed to Be Elon Musk’s Starlink

On Thursday night we were sent multiple videos from readers across Montgomery County informing us of an unidentified flying object in the sky. The lights appear in a long line that Forbes described as “up to 60 in a long line” and they belong to Starlink, one of many satellites operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Starlink provides satellite Internet access coverage to over dozens of countries and eventually aims to provide global mobile phone service following this year. SpaceX started launching Starlink satellites in 2019 and as of earlier this year, consists of over 3,580 mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), which communicate with designated ground transceivers. In total, nearly 12,000 satellites are planned to be deployed, with a possible later extension to 42,000. SpaceX announced reaching more than one million subscribers in December of last year. Owner of Yard House, Olive Garden, And Other Restaurant Chains Purchases Operator of Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse For $715 Million

Darden Restaurants, Inc. and Ruth’s Hospitality Group, Inc. jointly announced today that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement pursuant to which Darden will commence a tender offer to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Ruth’s for $21.50 per share, in an all-cash transaction with an equity value of approximately $715 million. Ruth’s, owner and operator of Ruth’s Chris Steak House (MoCo location in Gaithersburg’s downtown Crown and formerly in Bethesda), will complement Darden’s portfolio of differentiated brands which currently includes Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse (MoCo location in Germantown), Yard House (MoCo location in Gaithersburg), Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, The Capital Grille (MoCo location in Chevy Chase), Seasons 52 (MoCo location in North Bethesda), Bahama Breeze and Eddie V’s.

Per the press release: Ruth’s Chris was founded in 1965 in New Orleans, Louisiana, by Ruth Fertel and features signature USDA Prime steaks served sizzling on 500-degree plates, New Orleans-inspired sides and an award-winning wine list. Ruth’s Chris has 154 locations around the globe, including 80 company-owned or -operated restaurants and 74 franchised restaurants, generating systemwide sales of over $860 million, total revenues over $500 million, and average annual restaurant volumes for company-owned or -operated locations of $6.2 million in Ruth’s fiscal year 2022.

$50,000 Winning Scratch-Off Sold at 99 Ranch Market in Gaithersburg

The Gaithersburg resident contacted a friend, who works at a Lottery retailer to help confirm the win and claimed the prize this week. She and her husband plan to take a trip to Dubai and pay bills with their winnings. The Montgomery County retailer, 99 Ranch Market, is also celebrating this win. For selling a $50,000 top-prize-winning scratch-off, the store will receive a $500 bonus from the Lottery. The Gold X20 game launched in January 2023, and three of its $50,000 top prizes remain unclaimed along with five $5,000 prizes and thousands of additional prizes ranging from $5 to $1,000.

BEYOND COMICS to Celebrate “Free Comic Book Day” This Saturday, May 6

On Saturday May 6, 2023, BEYOND COMICS, located at 18749 B N Frederick Road in Gaithersburg, will be celebrating FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! The annual event, now in its 22nd year, is held in comic shops across the country. Comics publishers including Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, IDW, Image, and several others release special editions of their comics to be given away to customers. BEYOND COMICS will also be holding sales that day, as well as an in-store appearance by comics and trading card artist John Watkins-Chow, who will be doing free sketches for customers.

Additionally, BEYOND COMICS will be holding a food drive on the day; those who bring in a non-perishable food donation will be allowed to take extra free comics! “BEYOND COMICS will be giving away comics as long as they last, and running sales all day!” BEYOND COMICS in Frederick, MD, located at 5632 Buckeystown Pike, will also be celebrating the day with free comics, sales, artist appearances, and a food drive. Vehicle Driven Into Woods Thursday Morning

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision in Gaithersburg on Thursday, May 4 around 4:30am. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, a single vehicle was driven off the road and into a wooded area near the Exit 10 (Montgomery Village Ave) ramp on northbound I-270. Both occupants of the vehicle were extricated and transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

City of Gaithersburg Promotes Building Safety Month in May

To help raise awareness the City of Gaithersburg is conducting free deck maintenance inspections all month long: Each May, the International Code Council spearheads a national observation of Building Safety Month. To help raise awareness about the importance of safe & resilient construction, the City’s Permits & Inspections Division is conducting free deck maintenance inspections on single-family homes all month long. The free service is open to City of Gaithersburg residents. To request an inspection, e-mail [email protected].

For more than 42 years, Building Safety Month has reinforced the need for the adoption of modern, regularly-updated building codes, and helps individuals, families, and businesses understand what it takes to create safe & sustainable structures. Chicken Basket Reopening Soon in Gaithersburg

Chicken Basket at 30 N. Summit Ave. in Olde Towne Gaithersburg plans to open in “2-3 weeks”, depending on approval of all final inspections. We first reported in January 2020 that Chicken Basket would be reopening after a fire closed the restaurant back in April 2019. Chicken Basket’s menu consist of fried chicken, wings, subs, gyros, salads, wraps, burgers, and seafood. The restaurant will be open Mon – Thurs 11am to 8pm, Fri – Sat 11am to 9pm and closed on Sunday. Full menu can be seen below, as well as photos from Chicken Basket’s original 1978 menu.

Update on Red Door Escape Room in Rio

Coming soon signage is up at the Red Door Escape Room at Rio. It will be occupying the 4,057 SF space at 125 Boardwalk Place that was recently home to Locally Crafted before it moved a bit down the street, and previously home to Ann Taylor (across from Potbelly). Construction began back in March and according to a post on the business’s Facebook page, Red Door will be opening this summer.

The participants loved the game and immediately requested another one be created. Because of the feedback, Dan began to consider how to bring this experience to even more people. After some research and brainstorming, Dan and his wife partnered with a long-time friend and together created Red Door Escape Room in Southlake, Texas. Their passion in providing communities with exciting memories and a new experience has grown so much over the years. Red Door Escape Room is constantly creating newer and better games – with plans to expand to many more locations to reach as many people as possible!”
