For nearly 45 years, Lakeforest Mall was more than a place to shop. It was where Montgomery County families spent weekends, teens found independence, kids had their first jobs, and entire generations built memories that still resonate years after the mall’s final doors closed. A public hearing on the proposed Rio Lakefront redevelopment in Gaithersburg is now just days away. The plan has generated significant discussion on social media, with more residents voicing concerns than support about adding additional residential buildings to the lakefront area.

50 Top Pizza, an esteemed pizza evaluation site based in Paestum, Italy, near Naples, has unveiled its 2025 Top 50 Pizza list. Known for its rigorous and anonymous inspections, 50 Top Pizza is an independent online guide that ensures unbiased evaluations by paying for meals in full. This year, Maryland proudly contributed with two pizzerias making the list: Inferno Pizzeria Napoletana in Gaithersburg at 21st place, and Angeli’s in Baltimore at 47th.

Since its closing in 2013, the absence of Roy’s Place has left a hole in the hearts of many current and former Montgomery County residents. According to the now-defunct Roy’s Place website, the restaurant first opened in Rockville in 1955, offering more than 200 sandwiches. After a couple of moves within Rockville, it relocated to 2 E. Diamond Ave. in Olde Towne Gaithersburg in 1971, where it became a local institution.

Since then, additional information has been released regarding the redevelopment of Lakeforest. 

Demolition work is underway inside Lakeforest Mall as crews continue preparing the long-shuttered property for full teardown. Recent photos from inside the building show active interior demolition as the site moves closer to its next phase of redevelopment (photos available below).


In August 2024, we reported that a sushi restaurant had signed on to open at Rio Lakefront, though details at the time were limited. We later learned the restaurant would be called Koi Sushi, and now, with construction moving forward, it appears the highly anticipated spot is tracking toward an early 2026 opening.
