Courtney Davis Named Gaithersburg’s New Communication & Public Engagement Manager

Gaithersburg City Manager Tanisha Briley announced the selection of Courtney Davis as the new Manager of the Office of Communication & Public Engagement Division within the City Manager’s Office. Courtney will begin her role with the City on March 6, 2023, and will be introduced at the Mayor & City Council meeting that evening.

Courtney comes to Gaithersburg with more than 15 years of experience working in a variety of communication and marketing roles. She has led teams of content creators focusing on writing, social media, communications, and marketing. In her most recent role, she served as the Assistant Director of Public Relations at Prince George’s Community College. Under Courtney’s leadership, the College strategically increased its media relations, engaged local and national reporters, and secured Op-Eds, feature stories and profile pieces. Courtney began her career as a marketing manager and publicist for national Broadway tours.

Local Students Extend Invite to 16th Annual Black History Month Celebration

The Students of Minds In Motion Child Care, Scotland Community, and the Judith Resnik Elementary School extend an invitation to celebrate Black History Month with a night filled with knowledge, food, poetry, and performances. This free program will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023, from 7 – 9 pm at the Resnik Elementary School, Gaithersburg, MD, and includes dinner from local restaurants. The program will recognize icons of Black History including Viola Davis, Rosa Parks, Michelle Obama, Guy Bluford, Missy Elliot, Cynthia Erivo, and Katherine Dunham. Students will present on their achievements throughout the event.

Performances will be led by various youth groups including students of Minds in Motion Child Care, Scotland Community, Bells Mill Elementary School, Cabin John Middle School, Damascus Elementary School, Goshen Elementary School, Judith Resnik Elementary School, Winston Churchill High School, and Watkins Mill Elementary School. The highlight of the evening will be the Step Performance featuring Kristopher Paul, Noah Gleaton, Diezel Duckett, Sidoine Djimbou, Braedan Lynk, Bebo Aly, and Ahmed Hassan.

Jeyco is approximately 5-feet tall and weighs 110 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and black sneakers. B2J Fish Soup Now Open in Gaithersburg

B2J, which specializes in traditional Szechuan-style fish soup, is now open at 9629 Lost Knife Rd in the Montgomery Village Crossing shopping center in Gaithersburg. The menu include a variety of soups where you choose the broth flavor, protein, and add-ons, including tilapia, bass, and Waygu beef. B2J has additional locations in New Jersey, Texas, and Washington State.

Montgomery Village Crossing is also home to BLT Grill, Hook & Reel, Roy Rogers, and the recently opened Los Amigos. Nori Japan, one of the last remaining tenants at Lakeforest Mall, is also expected to open a location in the shopping center later this year.

The family has shared the following message below via The Office Cafe & Lounge Facebook Page, referring to Swenson as an incredible man, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend:

Montgomery County Police Investigating Single-Vehicle Fatal Collision Near Laytonsville; Identity of Victim Released

Per MCPD: The Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a single-vehicle fatal collision that occurred on Saturday, February 18, 2023. At approximately 2:40 a.m., 59-year-old Lawrence Paul Swenson, of Laytonsville, was driving a black 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, eastbound on Golf Estates Drive near Sand Trap Drive when, for reasons still under investigation, Swenson drove off the left side of the road and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

This is an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact CRU detectives at (240)773-6620.

Gaithersburg’s Emergent BioSolutions Announces Sale of Travel Health Business to Bavarian Nordic for Up To $380 Million

Gaithersburg’s Emergent BioSolutions, located at 300 Professional Drive, announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell its travel health business to Bavarian Nordic (BVNRY) for a total value of up to $380 million, including potential future milestone payments. this announcement was made the same week the company announced that its NARCAN nasal spray was one step closer to FDA approval.

Per the press release: Under the terms of the definitive agreement, Bavarian Nordic will acquire the rights to VIVOTIF®, indicated for the active immunization to prevent typhoid fever, and VAXCHORA®, indicated for the active immunization to prevent cholera, as well as the development-stage chikungunya vaccine candidate CHIKV VLP. Bavarian Nordic will also acquire Emergent’s manufacturing site in Bern, Switzerland, and development facilities in San Diego, California. Approximately 280 current Emergent employees are expected to join Bavarian Nordic as part of the transaction.

Gaithersburg Resident Owns One of the Most Valuable Hot Wheels Collections in the World

Mattel created Hot Wheels in 1968 to compete with Matchbox (which Mattel now owns). Although Hot Wheels were originally intended to be for children and young adults, they have become popular with adult collectors, and one of the most valuable collections in the world is owned by Bruce Pascal, who lives right here in Montgomery County (video below).

According to Fox 5, Pascal has more than 7,000 items in his collection. “To put it mildly, I’m obsessed with Hot Wheels,” Pascal told Fox 5. Though he got his first Hot Wherls car the year they were created, in 1968, it was until his mother gave him his old collection in 1999 that he rekindled his love for the model cars.

MCFRS Respond to Collision With Rollover Saturday Afternoon

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision with rollover on Saturday afternoon. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the collision occurred around 2:30pm on Quince Orchard Road and McDonald Chapel Drive in Gaithersburg. Gaithersburg’s Emergent BioSolutions Reports FDA Advisory Committees’ Unanimous Vote in Favor of NARCAN Nasal Spray for Over-The-Counter Use

If approved by the FDA, NARCAN Nasal Spray will be the first 4 mg naloxone nasal spray switched from prescription status to over-the-counter use

Gaithersburg-based Emergent BioSolutions announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee and the Anesthetic and Analgesic Drug Products Advisory Committeehave unanimously voted in favor (a total of 19 votes) that the benefit-risk profile of NARCAN^®(naloxone HCl) Nasal Spray is supportive of its use as a nonprescription opioid overdose reversal agent. Emergent presented an overview of its over-the-counter (OTC) development program, the medical need, Human Factors study data and seven years of post-marketing safety data. The FDA is not bound by the committees’ guidance but will take its advice into consideration.
