Sheetz Submits Final Site Plan For First MoCo Location

Royal Farms has opened, Wawa is on the way, and many have been waiting for the trifecta to be complete with the Sheetz announcement. Good news for the lovers of the convenience store/gast station, as Sheetz, Inc., has submitted Final Site Plan application, SP-9217-2022, requesting approval for a 6,139 square foot convenience retail store with drive-through and automobile filling station at 751 Progress Way, located off of N. Frederick Rd (355) in Gaithersburg.

Sheetz will be part of the new Progress Labs development, which is very visible from the corner of Montgomery Village Avenue and 355. Progress Labs at Progress Way in Gaithersburg, MD is a two-building approximately 495,000 SF development situated on 44 acres with I-270 visibility and access off of exit 11 Montgomery Village Avenue. Construction commenced at Progress Labs at 700 N. Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg, MD back in October, and according to the video below (posted by Progress Labs on Monday, July 18th), is scheduled to be delivered in Q4 of 2022.

Renderings of Potential Development at Belward Farm

Back in May, Trammell Crow Company (TCC), a global commercial real estate developer, unveiled plans to develop The Labs at Belward, a world-class life science campus, in the “Shady Grove area of Montgomery County, Md” (Muddy Branch Rd/Great Seneca Hwy/Darnestown Rd). The Labs at Belward, located at the Belward Campus of The Johns Hopkins University, will initially include 757,000 square feet of trophy lab and research and discovery space across three buildings. The project has the potential to grow to approximately 1.6 million square feet across seven buildings. Construction of the initial 757,000 square feet will begin June 2023 and is slated to be completed in early 2025.

A Belward Campus Concept Plan application was submitted to the Montgomery County Planning Board by Lerch Early Brewer, on behalf of the Trammell Crow Company, on March 7, 2022. It included a few renderings of what the completed project could look like if the previously mentioned potential of 1.6 million square feet across seven buildings is reached. The project, which is designed to achieve LEED Gold standard, will be supported by secured structured parking and will also feature an expansive six-acre public park that will include an amphitheater, recreational fields, and two retail pavilions totaling approximately 6,000 square feet. The plan also includes activating large wooded buffer areas, installing several miles of bike and walking trails, and preserving the site’s significant natural elements. Signage Installed at Upcoming Montgomery Village Starbucks

Permanent signage has been installed at the new Montgomery Village Starbucks, which will be located at the former site of the Montgomery Village Denny’s (19290 Montgomery Village Ave.) The drive through menu screen/speaker was also recently installed and construction is ongoing on the interior of the store. No opening date has been announced but the store is expected to open by the fall.

Earlier this week we reported that Hangry Joe’s will be coming to the space next to the upcoming Starbucks. Hangry Joe’s opened a location at 2533 Ennals Ave in Wheaton back in May and has additional locations opening at 10050 Darnestown Road in the Travilah Square shopping center and at 718-B Rockville Pike.

New Dunkin’/Baskin Robbins Location on Shady Grove Rd and 355 Grand Opening Celebration to Take Place on Thursday, August 4th

The new Dunkin/Baskin Robbins located in the recently renovated Rock Grove Center on the corner of 355 and Shady Grove relocated back on Monday, July 25. The new location in on the back side of the shopping center at the old United Bank location at 16268 Frederick Rd. On Thursday, August 4th, the store will be holding its grand opening.

Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken is Coming to Montgomery Village

Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken is coming to the Montgomery Village Shopping Center, according to KLNB realty. The restaurant will be located in the brand new space next to the upcoming Starbucks. Earlier this year Hangry Joe’s opened a location at 2533 Ennals Ave in Wheaton and has additional locations opening at 10050 Darnestown Road in the Travilah Square shopping center and at 718-B Rockville Pike.

Hangry Joe’s joins a growing list of restaurants that are all expected to open in the redeveloped shopping center by the end of this year that includes Antojitos Salvadoreños Isabel, Boo Boo’s Pho, Dickey’s BBQ, and Kobe Japan. The Joint chiropractic care center and Safe Splash Swim School have also signed leases and will coming to the center.

SafeSplash Swim School to Open in Montgomery Village

SafeSplash Swim School has signed on to take over a big space in the newly renovated Montgomery Village Center. It will be located on the new Centerway Rd extension, behind Suburban air and Linda’s Nails. This will be SafeSplash Swim School’s second Montgomery County location after opening the area’s first SafeSplash facility, located within LA Fitness on Rockville Pike in Rockville.

SafeSplash typically offers learn-to-swim lessons to children as young as six months of age. No prior swimming experience is needed. Adult and adaptive lessons are typically offered as well. Various class levels are offered to suit different swimming abilities. Per SafeSplash, “Students are taught in small classes (no larger than 4 students to 1 instructor), by experienced and passionate instructors. SafeSplash uses a proven, proprietary instruction method that has been tested and refined over the company’s history, across 10 years and over 4 million swim lessons.”

Gaithersburg’s Novavax Covid-19 Vaccine Available for Adults in Maryland Starting Today

The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) announced all Marylanders 18 years old and older are now eligible to receive a primary series of the newly authorized Novavax COVID-19 vaccine, starting Monday, August 1st.

The Novavax COVID-19 vaccine is protein-based. Protein-based vaccines have been used for decades to combat diseases including hepatitis B and influenza. In a 30,000-participant clinical trial, the two-dose vaccine was 90% effective at preventing illness from COVID-19.

Spirit Halloween Announces Three Montgomery County Locations ‘Coming Soon’

During the Halloween season, Spirit operates over 1,400 store locations in North America. The Spirit Halloween website is open year-round, offering its in-store products online. The stores are usually open for 30 or 60 days prior to Halloween. Spirit has announced Montgomery County locations via its website, including:

Five Below Now Open at Gaithersburg Square

Five Below is now open at 516 N Frederick Ave in Gaithersburg, the former location of Chuck E. Cheese. This is the second Five Below store in Gaithersburg, the other located at 202 Kentlands Blvd. We were told by representatives from the Kentlands location that the new Gaithersburg Square location will not be replacing the Kentlands store. Five Below has additional MoCo locations in Germantown, Rockville, and Silver Spring.

Back on May 31, teen accessory chain Claire’s relocated its Lakeforest Mall location to Gaithersburg Square, taking over the former Grog’s Beer and Wine location between AT&T and Ashley Furniture Homestore.

Gaithersburg’s 20/20 GeneSystems Honored As It Opens ‘First-of-its-Kind’ Diagnostics Incubator in Montgomery County

Gaithersburg’s 20/20 GeneSystems, Inc.’s, (“20/20”), Clinical Lab InnovationAxcellerator (CLIAx), received an honorable mention in Fast Company’s 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards in the Health category. The category “honors medical innovations that save lives, extend longevity, or increase access to care.” About 60 companies joined 20/20 as Health category honorees on this year’s coveted Fast Company’s list including Johnson & Johnson, Bose, Abbott, 3M and Colgate-Palmolive.

Believed to be the first shared CLIA lab designed to help diagnostics start-ups more rapidly enter the U.S. market, CLIAx offers nearly 3,000 square feet of ready-to-use communal clinical laboratory space and testing equipment. Additionally, 20/20’s marketing and sales teams help promote the new tests introduced by CLIAx’s clients to the market segments in which 20/20 is currently active. Melodia Rinaldi Named Gaithersburg Chorus Music Director

The City of Gaithersburg has announced that Melodia Rinaldi will be joining the Gaithersburg Chorus as its new Music Director as of August 23, 2022.

Melodia Mae “Mimi” Rinaldi (she/her) is a music educator from Baltimore. She is currently the director of the Vocal Programs at Gaithersburg Middle School in MCPS where she also teaches General Music, Drama/Theater, and is a faculty advisor of the SOS program and the Restorative Justice initiative.
