This was expected, as construction was scheduled to start January 1st, but the closing date was previously unsure. Kimco Realty announced that they’ll be renovating the theatre to make room for Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas, creating a walkway from where Persians Gallery is now, through the building to Market Street.

A few interesting upgrades that’ll be included in the revitalization:

Some of my favorite restaurants in MoCo are the ones you step foot in and feel like you’ve entered 1991. The food is usually really good, but you’d never know it by looking at the restaurant from the outside. The bar is often filled with the same regulars that have been taking up seats for decades. I don’t want to call them “divey” cause there’s a negative connotation that comes with that and most of the time these places hold some of our favorite memories (all images via the Restaurants Facebook pages).

Here’s 10 of them:

Yard House, which offers “great food, classic rock, and the worlds largest selection of draft beer” is working towards taking over the old Macaroni Grill location. There are still a few hoops left for Yard House to jump through, but it’s looking like a strong possibility.

Poke District will be opening soon where the old Sprint store was over by the movie theater. Per their website: “Inspired by Hawaiian cuisine, Poki District brings you a bowl of freshest ingredients, from salmon and ahi tuna to chicken and tofu, to name a few, topped with the most colorful toppings such as avocado, seaweed salad, and mango, drizzled with the flavorful sauces. Whether you want to stay simple or go adventurous, you can create a bowl that perfect for you.” More on PokiDistrict at www.pokidistrict.com

With cookie dough, bubble tea, and macarons trending as the new go-to dessert shops, does this signify the end of the froyo boom?

Cupcakes seem to have weathered the storm, so maybe they’re here to stay! I’m an ice cream guy and always found myself settling for frozen yogurt because there were so many places I could get it. I can’t say I’m upset, but I always feel for a business when they’re forced to close their doors.

Since I’m a huge fan of lists, I wanted to create an accurate list of the “best” places to buy in MoCo. In order to make this list accurate I asked local realtor, Jonathan Fox, to help me break down the county’s “best” areas and include a few up and coming areas that he thinks are due for a dramatic increase in price over the coming years. Here’s what he had to say:

So as a long time realtor and resident of Montgomery County I am often asked where the “best” opportunities and areas to buy houses are located, and what our future real estate markets in MoCo will ultimately look like. In this piece I will do my best to break it down for you.

If you grew up in Montgomery County (anywhere near Gaithersburg), you’ve likely seen Sam Eig Highway numerous times…but maybe weren’t sure to pronounce it (it sounds like I’d with a g instead of a d…i’g ). Most GPS systems mispronounce it to this day, which could lead to a second generation of confusion regarding the pronunciation of his name.

Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s talk about the man behind the locally famous name. Sam Eig was born in Byelorussia (now Belarus) in 1899, living there for 15 years before moving to the United States in 1914. He lived in Seattle and New York City before moving to the Washington D.C. area in the 20s. Eig owned a grocery store in D.C. before opening Eig Liquor Store when Prohibition was repealed (also in D.C.). At the same time, he was focusing on real estate in the Silver Spring/Takoma Park area and chose to stick with that full-time in the 40s. His real estate holdings were already worth over $100 million before deciding to expand his real estate empire to Gaithersburg in the late 50s/early 60s. He was even one of ten men mentioned as the “vanguard of the postwar millionaires” in a 1952 issue of Fortune magazine. Due to his success with real estate across the county, Sam Eig earned the nickname “Mr. Montgomery County.”

One of our Twitter followers informed us of a rumor swirling around Olney about the possibility of Sakura closing and being replaced with an IHOP. For what it’s worth, I called Sakura last night and the manager told me that this is not true.

K-Mart and Payless in the Kentlands will both close by the end of this summer.
