Coming soon signage is up at Potomac Cookie Co. at 109A Market St in the Kentlands Square shopping center in Gaithersburg, near Moby Dick and the upcoming Poke Bros. Potomac Cookie Co. is known for its “giant size” 4oz cookies and flavors include Choco-delight, Da Fudge, Dorothy’s Slippers, Double Dutch, Peebee ‘n’ Yay!, and S’more Love. Construction is currently underway on the interior of the store and we’re told the restaurant is anticipating a December opening.
In other cookie news, New York‘s Chip City will be opening its first Maryland location at the Shoppes of Bethesda, replacing Fancy Cakes By Leslie at 4939 Elm St. Fancy Cakes by Leslie closed in October 2022. A commercial permit was issued at the beginning of the summer for a $210,000 buildout at the location and now the opening date has been announced– Friday, November 3rd.
Everyone has had their share of terrible experiences in MoCo parking lots, and while there are more than 25 “bad” parking lots, we’ve narrowed down a list (in no particular order) of what may be the worst based on our experiences and comments left by readers throughout the years.

In January we let you know that Poke Bros will be opening its first Maryland location in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood. The restaurant, which opened its first location in 2016 and has since expanded to over 75 restaurants across the country, will be taking over the space that was previously home to Next Day Blinds at 107 Market St W until 2020. Permanent signage went up earlier this summer, and now interior work is nearing completion (photo below). An opening date is not yet available, but it appears that it will be open this fall.
More bout Poke Bros: After the founders were introduced to the Hawaiian staple on a trip to California. The appeal of this fast and casual—while healthy—concept immediately inspired the founders to begin thinking how they could bring this unique dish to the midwest. From its inception, we were confident the foodies of Columbus would love the poké concept, but wanted to provide an inexpensive and accessible product in the larger market. After some intense research and trial and error, the Poké Bros founders developed their own brand of poké bowl flavor they are proud to share and call their own. Modeling similar assembly line casual dining concepts, we developed a unique way to build your “sushi in a bowl” and have fun doing so! As the poké movement has caught on, Poké Bros has rapidly expanded into multiple states across the Midwest and East Coast, offering the same fresh and authentic cuisine to a wider range of customers. We will continue to stick to our roots, as Poké Bros continues to grow, and offer only the best fresh ingredients that fill you up but don’t slow you down.

The shop has held a few events prior to its grand opening and offers a variety of the same crystal candies many have seen on the Silky Gem social media accounts. The grand opening was initially scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 24th, but had to be postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, opening earlier this week. Store hours are 12pm-8pm daily, closed on Tuesdays.

Our small team recently discussed a few upcoming events that some of our staff members/contributors/friends plan to attend in the coming weeks and while many were mentioned, we put together this list of the five events that came up the most:
GreekFest (9/8-9/10, Silver Spring): Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church will hold its annual Greek festival starting Friday, September 8th and running until Sunday, September 10th. The festival will take place over three days– on the grounds of Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, located at 701 Norwood Road in Silver Spring: Friday, 9/8: 4pm-9pm, Saturday, 9/9: 11am-9pm. Sunday, 9/10: 11am-7pm. Read more about the event here.
The 30th Kentlands/Lakelands 5K Run, Walk, and Kid’s Fun Runs, as well as a virtual race component, will take place on Saturday, September 2nd from noon until 2pm. The 5K course winds through the Lakelands and Kentlands neighborhoods before heading down Main Street to the finish line. Every 5K registration comes with a Dri-Fit crew neck race shirt (men’s, women’s, and kid’s sizes available). The post-race celebration will feature a Merchant’s Expo area.
Per the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K website: Live entertainment will be featured on the course – local bands set up along the course to delight participants and spectators alike, making what is already a spirited and fun event even livelier. The event finishes with the awards ceremony, team awards (lots of family options), and raffle items donated by local merchants. Cash prizes for the top three male and female finishers.
Last March we let you know that F45, which has been opening locations across Montgomery County with recent openings in Potomac and Olney, is coming to Gaithersburg with an upcoming Kentlands location. Construction has been ongoing and while an opening date isn’t currently available, it may be ready within a few months (photo below). A Germantown location is also expected to open soon in the Seneca Meadows shopping center near Wegmans (no date available).
The company had pre-Covid plans to make a move into Gaithersburg’s Rio Lakefront, which fell through, but signed on to take over the space that was recently closed for a few years and previously home to Subway (between Caspian House of Kabob and the recently closed Edible Arrangements).
Bella Ballet opened in 2013 when owner Hope MacDonald opened the flagship location, located at 347 Kentlands Blvd in Gaithersburg, at age 24 with $5,000 of her savings. Now, she is opening her second location in the neighboring shopping center at 215 Kentlands Blvd, next to Cava.
The flagship location will remain open with classes offered for students ages 2-7. The new sister location, Empower, will open at 215 Kentlands Blvd., and will offer classes for students ages 7-18. This location will be open in September 2023. Enrollment for both locations is available now on the Bella Ballet website.
