Brews & Barrels opened its first location in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood in February 2020. Just over two and a half years later, a second Brews & Barrels is set to open at 9433 Common Brook Rd at Owings Mills New Town. It will be taking over the location that was formerly home to Artful Gourmet Bistro. Signage has been erected, but a specific opening date is not currently available.

The restaurant offers American fare, including crab cakes, various salads, burgers, sandwiches, and more. At the bar, whiskey and beer are featured prominently, but they carry spirits in every category. The restaurant group also owns the recently opened Creek Lodge Bar & Grill in Rockville and Vine Alley, also located in the Kentlands.

Exterior construction appears to be complete at the upcoming CVS location in the Kentlands. The fencing that surrounded the construction site for the last few months has been removed, but there is still work left to do on the surrounding parking lot and interior of the store (photos below). While an opening date has not been provided, it’s very possible that CVS could open in the next couple months.

We first reported that CVS would be taking over the old Tommy Joe’s/Boulevard Tavern/Brasserie Beck/O’Donnell’s location in the Kentlands back in 2019, and it took a while for demolition/construction to get started, but things have moved quickly in recent months.

Following months of delays due to flooding at the site, construction has continued at the upcoming Shake Shack location in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood. As shown in the featured photo, the frame of the building has gone up and it should construction of the building should move quickly from here, weather permitting. While an opening timeframe hasn’t been provided, we’d expect the restaurant to open in the first half of 2023.

Background: On July 8, 2021, Shake Shack was granted approval for the construction of a 4,700 square foot building with outdoor seating as the second of three commercial infill sites totaling 16,000 square feet along Kentlands Square Place. The burger chain was granted its license to sell beer and wine on the premises during its Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) hearing on January 6th of 2022, and prepared to break ground in February. Construction began in March, but stalled after flooding that occurred over the summer.

“The Costco in Gaithersburg is the 7th circle of hell” is just one of many answers we received when we asked the question, “What is the worst parking lot in MoCo?” on social media.  Everyone has had their share of terrible experiences in MoCo parking lots, and while there are more than 26 “bad” parking lots, we’ve narrowed down a list (in no particular order) of what we feel are the worst.

Nestle Toll House has been closed for a couple years after opening in the second half of 2018 at 11 Arch Place on the ground level of the Colonnade building in the Kentlands neighborhood of Gaithersburg. The location was previously occupied by Kentlands Cafe. The restaurant equipment and furniture is now available via auction.

The cafe location is currently available for sale, listed at $499k. Rasmus, a company founded to provide asset recovery and auction services to the business community, is auctioning off a lot of the equipment and furniture from the cafe. The auction closes on October 11th.

Back in March we let you know of a the third Crumbl Cookies location that will be coming to Montgomery County, as a new store signed on at 277 Kentlands Blvd, next to Panera, in the space that was formerly home to TD Ameritrade. We stopped by yesterday and a representative let us know that the cookie spot will open on Thursday, October 6th (which is also what Google lists as the opening date in the screen capture below).

Crumbl Cookies is a bakery with locations nationwide that sells chocolate chip and sugar cookies every day, but the rest of their offerings rotate. Their flavors range from experimental (watermelon chilled sugar cookie), to cookie twists on classic desserts (peach cobbler cookie), to more traditional cookies (peanut butter brownie cookie). The first MoCo location opened at Federal Plaza in Rockville in 2020 and opened a Germantown location earlier this month.

Earlier this summer we let you know that JK Beer and Wine would be moving from its previous location at 800 Rockville Pike to 331 Kentlands Blvd, the former location of Liberty Income Tax, in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands neighborhood in the space located on the other side of Giuseppi’s. The store officially opened late last week.

JK Beer and Wine opened at its previous Rockville Pike location in the Golden Arcade shopping center, next to Yuan Fu Vegetarian, in the fall of 2021. It took over the space that was previously home to Enterprise. The beer and wine had a hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcoholic Beverage Services (ABS) on Thursday, June 16th, where they were approved for a “transfer of location of a Class A, Beer and Wine License, Off Sale Only with delivery, for the premises known as JK Beer & Wine.” Construction didn’t take long and the store is ready to go (photos below).

The annual Oktoberfest celebration returns to transform the Kentlands in Gaithersburg, with multiple stages of live entertainment featuring traditional Bavarian music & dancing, along with local, regional & national talent. Fall-themed activities for families, a Business Expo, artisans, beer, mead & cider, and delicious food will delight attendees throughout the day. The event will take place on Sunday, October 9th from 12pm until 5pm. In past years this event has drawn crowds of up to 30,000. Admission, shuttles & parking are free to the public.

In the past, Oktoberfest has allowed area residents to experience a taste of Germany right in their own backyard with musical performances, traditional festival food, and samples from many local microbreweries and Maryland varietal wines. Fall festivities have previously included professional pumpkin carving and apple cider pressing demonstrations, free horse-drawn wagon rides, hands-on crafts, pumpkin and face painting, artists and crafters, family activities, and strolling entertainers. More details will be added as the event draws nearer.
