On the evening of Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, a single-engine airplane crashed into a wooded area at Wright Brothers National Memorial’s First Flight Airport (FFA) in. Roth Carolina. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash of the Cirrus SR-22 airplane. Among those killed in the crash was Montgomery County, MD man Shashwat Ajit Adhikari.

Members from the Maryland Car Rally Task Force, working in collaboration with the Maryland State Police Special (MSP) Operations Division, and allied police agencies disrupted twelve unlawful exhibition driving events throughout multiple Maryland counties, including Prince George’s, Anne Arundel, Howard and Baltimore, Saturday night.

With nearly $886 billion spent on research and development in the U.S., the non-profit organization SmileHub today released new reports on the Best Charities for Research and the States That Care the Most About Research in 2024. Maryland came in ranked as 2024’s state that cares the 3rd most about research.

The New York Times has released its list of  “America’s 50 Best Restaurants.” According to the newspaper, “Over the last 12 months, reporters and editors traveled to nearly every state scouting restaurants for our annual list.” While two DC restaurants (Moon Rabbit and Pascual) and  one VA restaurant (Joon in Vienna) made the list, just one Maryland restaurant was included.

50 Top Pizza, a pizza evaluation site in Paestum, Italy, not far from Naples, has released its 2024 Top 50 Pizza list. 50 Top Pizza is “an independent online guide which evaluates pizzerias with anonymous inspections during which the bill is paid in full.” Maryland contributed with the 22nd and 50th ranked pizzerias in the country.

During the month of September 2024, Frederick County’s INTERCEPT Task Force (Inter-agency Child Exploitation and Persons Trafficking) organized a multi-agency initiative aimed at combating the sexual solicitation of minors. The organized effort included participation from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Montgomery County Police Department. “This joint effort is part of an ongoing commitment to protect our community from child predators.” Three Maryland men, including one man from Clarksburg, were arrested and charged.

A Montgomery County judge denied Lee Boyd Malvo’s motion to vacate his guilty plea for six murders during the 2002 DC Sniper Attacks, deferring his re-sentencing until he completes his Virginia prison sentence.
