The World’s Largest Pickle Party Returns to Maryland This Month

The Big Dill, which describes itself as the “#1 Pickle Party in the World”, returns to Power Plant Live! at 34 Market Pl in Baltimore on September 23 and 24. The two day event will include pickle sampling, concerts, carnival games, a pickle eating contest, a brine chugging competition, and an appearance by “Dilly” the pickle. Pickle flavored cupcakes, donuts, fudge, ice cream, and pizza are a few of the items that will be available for purchase at the event.

Per the Big Dill: The Big Dill World’s Largest Pickle Party® is the premier pickle event of the year, featuring a pickle garden with 10+ handpicked artisan pickle companies sampling and selling a variety of pickles from all over the country. After the festival, attendees will receive a survey to vote for their favorite pickle company that will win The Best in Show. Entertaining guests throughout the weekend is a modern country, pop, and rock-themed live stage production with performances by musicians, actors, comedy routines, and choreographed dancers. Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore today delivered the keynote address at the inaugural Maryland Minority Business Counts event at Bowie State University. Event participants engaged with state government agencies and attended educational sessions to learn more about doing business with the state of Maryland as a Minority Business Enterprise program participant.

Governor Wes Moore Announces More Than $11.5 Million in Highway Safety Grants; Over $172,000 Awarded to Montgomery County Police Agencies

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore today announced more than $11.5 million in federal highway safety grants to organizations across Maryland as part of a statewide focus to prevent motor vehicle crashes and eliminate roadway fatalities. The federal funds will be distributed on Oct. 1 by the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office to 85 agencies, organizations, and programs.

“These investments are critical to building and maintaining a safe, reliable and efficient transportation system in Maryland,” said Gov. Moore. “Our administration is committed to partnering with local governments, officials and advocacy groups to reduce roadway injuries and fatalities and to ensure that highway safety remains a top priority across the state.”

Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office Launches Somber PSA on Impacts of Gun Violence

On Sunday, September 10, Maryland U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron launched a 60 second public service announcement encouraging viewers to take action to end gun violence. The video aired across Maryland just before kickoff of the Baltimore Ravens home opener, and will continue to broadcast across cable and digital platforms in Maryland.

“Gun violence impacts more than one person or one family. Friends, parents, employers, neighbors – all are forced to confront the devastating realities of gun violence,” said Maryland U.S. Attorney Erek L. Barron. “We are bringing together law enforcement, community organizations, and private citizens in pursuit of a common goal: protecting the places we call home.”

Attorney General Brown Joins $22.5 Million Settlement with Crypto Asset Platform Nexo

Per the Maryland Attorney General’s Office: Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown’s Securities Division announced that it has joined a $22.5 million multistate settlement with Nexo Capital, Inc. In September 2022, Maryland filed an action against Nexo in connection with its Earn Interest Product (EIP) accounts. The Securities Division had alleged that the EIP accounts enabled customers to deposit crypto assets with Nexo. In exchange, customers automatically earned interest on those deposits. Nexo offered investors interest rates of up to 36% on their deposits, significantly higher than rates offered for short-term, investment grade, fixed-income securities, or bank savings accounts. As of September 2022, over 93,300 United States residents had EIP accounts worth approximately $800 million, with more than 1,800 Maryland residents holding accounts worth about $15 million.

The Securities Division’s Consent Order, which details the case and formalizes the terms of the settlement, concluded that Nexo’s EIP accounts were unregistered securities, and that the company operated as an unregistered broker-dealer. The Order further concluded that Nexo engaged in dishonest and unethical practices and misrepresented and failed to provide important facts to its customers, such as information related to its regulatory compliance, profit-making activities, and interest generation.

Maryland Is 2023’s 3rd Happiest State in America, According to Study

With 50% of Americans saying they are “very satisfied” with the way their personal life is going, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2023’s Happiest States in America, with Maryland coming in as the third happiest state in the country.

To determine where Americans have the highest satisfaction with life, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 30 key indicators of happiness. The data set ranges from the depression rate and the share of adults feeling productive to income growth and the unemployment rate.

Governor Moore and First Lady Moore, Lieutenant Governor Miller Honor 9/11 Day of Remembrance

Per the State of Maryland: Governor Wes Moore, First Lady Dawn Moore, and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller today honored 9/11 Day of Remembrance in Maryland, participating in events throughout the day to honor those who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, including 69 Marylanders.

“Twenty two years ago, our world changed forever. This isn’t just a day of mourning—it is a day of gratitude,” said Gov. Moore. “We feel gratitude for the first responders who rushed to the scene, we feel gratitude for the Americans who answered the call to serve and deployed to defend our freedom overseas. Today, as we climb these stairs, let’s recommit ourselves to living with courage, grace, grit, fearlessness, and with an abiding commitment to leaving no one behind.”

Nationally, suicide is the 12th leading cause of death. Since the pandemic, many communities have seen an increase in suicide.

Older adults (85+) have the highest rates of suicide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Finalists Named for 2023-2024 MD Teacher of the Year

Today, the Maryland State Board of Education and Maryland State Department of Education announced the names of the seven finalists who will compete to be named the 2023-2024 Maryland Teacher of the Year.

Over $263 Million Waged by Sportsbooks Last Month in Maryland

A total of $263,729,559 was waged in Maryland during the month of August through online/mobile and in-person sportsbooks, which generated $2,555,671 in contributions to the state . Montgomery County’s first sportsbook opened at Sports & Social (11800 Grand Park Ave) in Pike & Rose on September 2. Full details below courtesy of the Maryland Lottery:

Maryland’s 12 retail and 12 mobile sportsbooks that operated during August 2023 combined to generate $2,555,671 in contributions to the state. Each sportsbook contributes 15% of its taxable win to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public education programs. Statewide handle in August totaled $263,729,559, with mobile handle accounting for 94.9% of the total at $250,360,244. Mobile wagering delivered $2,457,709 in contributions to the state during August, while retail sportsbooks contributed $97,962.
