Per MCDOT: As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Montgomery County Department of Police and the County’s Department of Transportation (MCDOT) are issuing a critical warning to motorists: Be safe, be aware and be responsible. Montgomery County Police and allied local and State police departments will be on the roads with enhanced patrols and sobriety checkpoints to get impaired drivers off the road. Nationally, the holiday weekend, marked by celebrations and increased travel, often comes with a surge in traffic crashes caused by excessive speed, impairment and distracted driving. The National Safety Council estimates 469 people may die on U.S. roads this Memorial Day holiday.

“This Memorial Day weekend, let us honor the memory of our fallen heroes by ensuring their sacrifice is not overshadowed by preventable tragedies,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “Every day, about 37 people die nationally in drunk driving crashes—that is one person every 39 minutes. Vision Zero and MCDOT continue to build and improve roadway infrastructure, but driver behavior plays a very important role as well. It is especially important for all of us to be diligent in making responsible choices this holiday weekend to ensure safer roads for everyone.”

Per MCDOT: Montgomery County residents can be on the lookout this winter for tributes to the County’s public works employees. Leading up to Public Works Week, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) middle school students participated in a “Paint the Plow” contest to celebrate the many contributions made by public works employees that keep the County running.

Redland Middle School in Derwood was selected as the first-place winner of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation’s (MCDOTs) ‘Paint the Plow’ snowplow naming contest. The winning design emulated the popular Pokémon franchise with the theme “Snowkémon” and the slogan “Gotta Melt It All.”

Residents can reserve a trip with this vehicle by visiting the Regency Taxi’s website here or by calling 301-990-9000.

This project provides for the replacement of the existing bridge (M-0056) on Redland Road over Mill Creek. The new superstructure will be constructed in the same location using accelerated bridge construction techniques to minimize the disruption to the traveling public and local community. This project will also include roadway work at each end of the bridge to tie-in to the existing roadway, as well as stream restoration for, both the upstream and downstream sections of, Mill Creek.

Per Montgomery County: High school students across Montgomery County have a message for their peers: “Put those phones away when driving or walking.”  That theme was emphasized as the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) announced the winners of its 2023 “Heads Up, Phones Down” video contest. Thomas Phillips of Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda was the grand prize individual winner. Anna Li and Isabel Wu of Poolesville High School took the grand prize in the team category. The contest asked students to produce videos encouraging peers to not allow cell phones to distract them while driving and walking. The contest received 185 video entries.

“Due to texting and driving, 11 teenagers die per day in our country,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “We want to avoid these tragedies in Montgomery County and these peer-to-peer messaging contests and campaigns are very effective at drawing attention and awareness to this dangerous and deadly behavior. I am really happy to see the level of participation we received; 185 video entries is very impressive.”
