Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a two-car collision on Sunday, August 6 in White Oak. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the incident occurred  at the intersection of Columbia Pike (Rt29) and Burnt Mills Ave and involved a rollover and two people trapped. All occupants have been extricated and three adult patients were transported with non-life threatening injuries.

Some lanes are currently blocked. We will post an update if additional information becomes available. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call for a fire in the basement of Rumba Y Carbon, a restaurant located at 11222 Grandview Ave (off of Veirs Mill Rd) in Wheaton, early Sunday morning.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the call came in at approximately 3:30am and approximately 65 firefighters responded to the call to get the fire under control and eventually extinguished. One person was transported to the hospital with minor burns and other non-life threatening injuries. As of 7:17am, the origin/cause of the fire was still under investigation with explosive investigators on the scene.


Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a call on the 12200 block of Centerhill St in Silver Spring on Friday, August 4, for a report of a fire at a two-story duplex with one person trapped inside. According to Assistant Chief David Pazos, MCFRS units arrived and located all occupants uninjured and safely outside of the home. Units extinguished the fire on the first and second floor and continued to “open up walls” of the home.

The fire displaced eight residents (five adults and three children) from two residential homes. Red Cross has supplied immediate assistance while renovations are occurring. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. MCFRS units returned to the neighborhood on Saturday and went door-to-door offering to check/install smoke alarms.

According to an update by Assistant Chief David Pazos, MCFRS units arrived and located all occupants uninjured and safely outside of the home. Units extinguished the fire on the first and second floor and continued to “open up walls” of the home. In an additional update, Pazos confirmed that all occupants from both sides of the duplex were located and uninjured. Red Cross has been contacted to help with relocation for both families.


Shortly before midnight on Tuesday night, police received 9-1-1 calls reporting a white Mercedes CLS 450 traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-270 near Rockledge Drive. The preliminary investigation indicates the driver, later identified as Jayleen Hannor, 23, of Macon, Georgia continued driving the wrong direction on I-270 on to the outer loop of I-495 when he crashed into a Nissan Pathfinder and a Lexus SUV at exit 34, Route 355. Hannor continued driving until he bailed out of the vehicle and fled on foot in the area of Connecticut Avenue. The crash killed Elizabeth Velez, 36, of Easton, Pennsylvania.  She was the driver of a Nissan Pathfinder involved in the crash. Velez is the mother of three children, ages 2, 5, and 15, all of whom were passengers in the vehicle.

A GoFundMe has been started for the family of Elizabeth Velez, whose 15-year-old daughter was also seriously injured in the crash, according to the fundraiser. In just one day, over $10,000 has been raised to help support her husband Johnny and their three daughters as they move forward.


At approximately 12:31am early Friday morning, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) investigated an odor that caused respiratory irritation to persons working in the building at 20200 Observation Drive at Montgomery College in Germantown.

According to Assistant Chief James Carpenter, the MCFRS Hazmat team investigated and found that chemicals were accidentally mixed that caused the reactions, and worked to ventilate the structure. Six adult patients were evaluated on the scene with mild respiratory irritation, with five of the adult adult patients eventually transported to the the local emergency room for evaluation of non-life-the injuries.

Maryland State Police are investigating a multi-vehicle crash in which one person died and nine others were injured late Tuesday evening in Montgomery County.

Per Maryland State Police: Shortly before 11:45 p.m., the Rockville Barrack received numerous calls for a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 270, near Rockledge Drive. According to a preliminary investigation, a white Mercedes SUV, driven by Jayleen Hannor, 23, of Macon, Georgia, continued southbound in the northbound lanes of I-270, to the outer loop of I-495.


Dr. Earl Stoddard, who is the Assistant Chief Administrator in Montgomery County and has served as the Director of the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management & Homeland Security (OEMHS) since January 2016, has provided an update on storm clean-up efforts via Twitter. “Just to provide an update on storm clean-up. Right now, the primary focus remains power restoration and road clearance. That requires coordination between the County and power utilities given the intersection between vegetation and power lines.


One person is dead after being struck by a CSX train Sunday morning in Gaithersburg. According to Assistant Chief with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) David Pazos on Twitter, “MCFRS is dispatched for a pedestrian struck by a heavy rail train behind the Motel 6 @ 497 Quince Orchard Rd. Units on the scene confirm 1 deceased w/no other injuries. Incident released to CSX and MCPD. Trains shut down till the investigation is complete.”

The Bethesda Park Condominiums complex, in the area of Randolph Rd. and Parklawn Dr., was one of the hardest hit when the sever storms rolled through late Saturday afternoon. According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Chief spokesperson Pete Piringer, a “microburst” could have been responsible for dozens of trees were knocked down and many of them were blown into or on top of buildings. A microburst is is a localized column of sinking air (downdraft) within a thunderstorm that can cause extensive damage at the surface.

A large crane was already on the scene earlier today helping with dozens of crews clear the trees that are now scattered across the complex and roofs of the buildings. Dozens of residents have been displaced and many remain without power into Saturday night. The county has set up shelters that many residents will be going to for the night. There are no known injuries
