Montgomery County Police has announced that during a September 2nd sobriety checkpoint on Columbia Pike and Dustin Rd in Burtonsville, officers from MCPD and allied agencies stopped approximately 507 vehicles and arrested 3 people for driving while impaired. During an August 25 sobriety checkpoint on northbound Georgia Avenue at Weller Road in Wheaton, MCPD stopped approximately 372 vehicles and arrested 5 people for driving while impaired and during an August 18th sobriety checkpoint on northbound Frederick Road at Game Preserve Road in Gaithersburg police stopped 565 vehicles and arrested 4 people for driving while impaired.

In July, recreational marijuana use became legal in the state of Maryland and Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones issued the following reminder before the July 4th weekend, “We implore drivers to think of cannabis the same way they think of alcohol. Do not get behind the wheel of a car if you are impaired. Our officers will pull over and arrest anyone they suspect of driving while impaired. Alcohol, marijuana and other drugs can impair the ability to drive because they slow coordination, judgment, and reaction times. Our priority is keeping the roads safe for everyone.”


Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged 22-year-old Vincent Adeniyi Oyegbami with an armed carjacking that occurred on Sunday, August 6, 2023, in the 8300 block of Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.

At approximately 5:39 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the location for the report of an armed carjacking. The investigation has revealed that Oyegbami, armed with a black handgun, stole a white 2017 Mercedes E300 from a male victim and left the scene.  Through the course of the investigation, Oyegbami was identified as the suspect.


Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) are on the scene of a collision that occurred Thursday morning in Wheaton-Glenmont. According to Montgomery County Police, the collision involved six vehicles, one of which is a school bus. Three adult females were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. There were no students on the bus at the time of the collision.

Per MCPD: A 61-year-old Silver Spring man died when he was hit by a vehicle on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.  At approximately 9:26 p.m., 4th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to New Hampshire Ave. and Bonifant Rd. for the report of a collision involving a pedestrian.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) responded to the scene. The preliminary investigation determined that the driver of a grey 2012 Toyota Prius was traveling south on New Hampshire Ave., south of Bonifant Rd., when she struck Sidney Cardoso Sr., who was in the roadway, for reasons still under investigation. The driver remained on scene.  Cardoso was transported to an area hospital, with serious injuries, and later pronounced dead at the hospital.


Montgomery County Police tweeted the following at 8:22am on Wednesday, September 6: “TRAFFIC ADVISORY: A traffic collision has Westbound River Road closed at Springfield Drive. Drivers are advised to take an alternate route. Expect delays.” According to public safety reporter Cordell Pugh, the collision involved a school bus. Montgomery County Police are investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. According to MCPD, “At approximately 9:26 p.m., 4th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the area of New Hampshire Ave. and Bonifant Rd. for the report of a pedestrian struck.

For reasons still under investigation, the driver of a grey Toyota Prius, that was traveling on New Hampshire Rd., south of Bonifant St., struck an adult male pedestrian who was walking in the roadway. The 61-year-old victim was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, where he was pronounced deceased.


Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a collision involving a pedestrian on Southbound MD-650 New Hampshire Ave, just South of Bonifant/Good Hope Roads in Colesville on Tuesday, September 5 around 9:20pm. According to public safety reporter Cordell Pugh, the patient was was transported to an area trauma center with critical injuries.

Montgomery County Police tweeted the following at 9:53pm: “TRAFFIC ADVISORY: A traffic collision has southbound New Hampshire Ave. closed between Bonifant Rd. and the ICC. Expect significant delays. Per MCPD: 23-year-old Manuel Alejandro Ayala, of Layhill, has been arrested and charged with a shooting and murder that he allegedly committed on Monday, September 4, 2023.  At approximately 7:54 p.m., 4th District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the 14200 block of Punch St. for the report of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male in the street, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. When officers entered a nearby home, they located 65-year-old Rosa Maria Benitez-Ozuna, of Layhill, deceased. Officers also located the suspect’s mother suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to an area hospital in serious condition.


WUSA9 reports that Montgomery County Police responded to a collision involving a child on Tuesday, September 5, near Rocky Hill Middle School in Clarksburg.  According to police, “MCPD responded to the area of Frederick Road and Little Seneca Parkway at approximately 7:49 a.m., for the report of a pedestrian struck.  A juvenile victim has been transported with minor injury to an area hospital.  The driver remained on scene.”

The Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) is asking for the public’s assistance in locating Elkin Herrera, a missing 14-year-old. Herrera was last seen on Wednesday August 30, 2023 at approximately 5:30 p.m., in the 600 block of Monroe St. in Rockville. He 5’7′ 120 Ibs, with black hair, brown eyes and was last seen wearing red t-shirt with the Nike logo, black sweatpants and grey sneakers.
