Applicants Sought for New Montgomery County Development Review Workgroup, with Deadline of Monday, April 17

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, the Montgomery County Planning Department and the Montgomery County Delegation to the Maryland House of Delegates are seeking applicants to be part of a new Development Review Process Workgroup. Individuals interested in the serving on the workgroup must apply by Monday, April 17. The workgroup will examine the County’s process for reviewing and approving development projects, with a special focus on ensuring the County remains economically competitive. The workgroup will be formed by May 1. The workgroup will be made up of individuals who represent County, State and other jurisdictional representatives, but also will include representatives from the development community and broader community.

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Council will meet on Tuesday, April 11 at 9 a.m. and the meeting will begin with two proclamation presentations. The first proclamation recognizing Child Abuse Prevention Month will be presented by Councilmember Sidney Katz. The second, presented by Councilmember Gabe Albornoz, will recognize National Public Health Week. The afternoon session will begin at 1:15 p.m. with a proclamation presentation recognizing Black Maternal Health Week, led by Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles. Montgomery County’s Asian American Health Initiative Awards Micro-Grants to 10 Organizations to Support Efforts for Health, Wellness and Social Services

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County’s Asian American Health Initiative (AAHI), one of three minority health initiatives that are part of the County’s Department of Health and Human Services, has awarded 10 local organizations a total of $71,000 as part of AAHI’s Asian American Center of Excellence (AACE) micro-grants funding opportunity.

The AACE was launched in January to support Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI)-serving community-organizations in developing and increasing their capacity to successfully provide health, wellness and social support programs and services. Through AACE, AAHI offered micro-grants to improve the capacity, sustainability, and infrastructure of smaller AAPI community-based organizations, faith-based institutions, and non-profits.

Montgomery County Announces Renewed Commitment to End Homelessness by 2025 through ‘Zero for All’; Bethesda Cares Will Be Campaign’s New Co-Chair

In 2015, Montgomery County was one of the first four communities in the U.S. to reach functional zero for veterans’ homelessness. Through the Inside (not Outside) campaign, more than 450 adults experiencing chronic homelessness were housed. Between 2013 and 2022, there has been a 41 percent decrease in the number of people experiencing homelessness, including a 50 percent reduction in homelessness for households with children under age 18.

Celebration of April as ‘Earth Month’ Will Include Free ‘GreenFest in the Gardens’ on April 22 and ‘Greenfest in the City’ on April 23 in Wheaton

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County’s eighth annual GreenFest is back this year, taking place in two different locations, ‘GreenFest in the Gardens’ will take place at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton on Saturday, April 22. ‘GreenFest in the City’ will happen at Marian Fryer Town Plaza in Downtown Wheaton on Sunday, April 23. Both will be free, family friendly events organized by a coalition of public, nonprofit and university partners. The Greenfest events, which are part of the County’s celebration of April as “Earth Month,” will feature more than 60 vendors at each location. The vendors represent green businesses, environmental nonprofits, arts and crafts vendors. They will feature educational activities for children and adults.

“GreenFest is one of my favorite yearly County events and I am pleased that we have now extended it to two days this year,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “GreenFest provides County residents climate-friendly actions we can all take at home, at work, and in our daily lives and I hope all community members will join us at Brookside Gardens and Marian Fryer Town Plaza to celebrate Earth Day. Montgomery County is dedicated to building a community culture of environmental responsibility and sustainability, and ‘GreenFest’ is a great example of how we can all work together toward that goal.”

County to Hold Second Community Information Meeting on ‘Restoration Center’ Project on Thursday, April 20 in Rockville

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County officials will host a second community information meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, in Rockville to provide additional details on plans to open a “Restoration Center” to help support residents in mental health and addiction crisis and reduce overburdening emergency rooms, hospitals and jail detention. The services are designed to assist individuals who are experiencing mental health, substance use disorder, and/or other types of behavioral health crisis. The in-person meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the third-floor hearing room of the County Council Office Building, which is located at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville.

At the restoration center, a team of multidisciplinary professionals will include nurses, licensed mental health and addiction professionals, peer specialists and resource navigators. The center will provide a variety of behavioral health services including triage, crisis stabilization and warm hand-off referrals to appropriate services. The center will operate 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

Montgomery County Career Fair and Hiring Expo to be Held on Wednesday, May 3, in Silver Spring

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County will hold a career fair for job seekers 18-and-over from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, at the Silver Spring Civic Building. The County is searching for candidates to fill more than 30 types of available positions across a variety of industries. The Silver Spring Civic Building is located at 1 Veterans Place in Silver Spring. Registration is not required to attend, but attendees are encouraged to register in advance at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/JOBFAIR.

The following County departments will be onsite at the event to discuss available opportunities and conduct same-day interviews for select positions, make on-the-spot offers or extend offers within 30 days after the event:

Fire Chief Scott Goldstein Retiring After 31 Years with MCFRS

Per Montgomery County: Today, Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein informed the County Executive’s Office of his decision to leave his position after more than 30 years as a firefighter in Montgomery County. Chief Goldstein’s last day with the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service will be Friday, June 30, 2023.

“Chief Goldstein has given this County so much since he first started with the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department in 1987,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “We have leaned on his expertise and skills as a leader and watched the department grow under his leadership. Over the past few years, Chief Goldstein has worked with me and other County leaders to make this a smooth transition and I thank him for his service to the men and women of MCFRS and the people of this County.”

Sixth Annual ‘Girl Power Contest’ Recognizing March as Women’s History Month Has Entry Deadline of Friday, March 31

Per Montgomery County: In recognition of March as Women’s History Month, the Montgomery County Commission for Women, Montgomery County Public Libraries and Friends of the Library Montgomery County, Inc. is holding its Sixth Annual “Girl Power Contest.” County residents, ages 5 and up, are encouraged to submit a short story, poem, drawing or entry in the medium of their choice that addresses this year’s theme. The deadline for entries is midnight on Friday, March 31.

In 2022, the Montgomery County Council made history as voters in November elected the County’s first female-majority Council. In honor of this milestone, the following question is the theme for this year’s Girl Power Contest: We now have six women on the Montgomery County Council. What advice would you give them to make sure our community is a place where women and girls can feel safe and encouraged?

Montgomery County Council Unanimously Reaffirms Appointment of James Hedrick to the Montgomery County Planning Board

Mr. Hedrick was appointed by the Council to become a Planning Board member on Feb. 28, 2023. On March 24, the Council received notification from County Executive Marc Elrich on his decision to disapprove James Hedrick’s appointment to the Planning Board.
